English Commentary & Exposition
Historical and Covenantal Context
In the Old Testament dispensation, access to the presence of God was severely restricted. Under the Mosaic Law, God manifested His presence in the Most Holy Place (Holy of Holies) inside the tabernacle and later the temple. Separating the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place was a thick, heavily woven curtain known as the veil.
No ordinary person could pass beyond this veil. Only the High Priest was permitted to enter, and that only once a year on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur), carrying the blood of animal sacrifices. This physical barrier symbolized the profound separation between a holy God and sinful humanity.
The Epistle to the Hebrews contrasts the temporary, shadow-like rituals of the Old Covenant with the eternal, complete work of the Messiah under the New Covenant. Verse 20 highlights the transformative breakthrough achieved through Christ’s sacrificial death.
Key Phrase Analysis
1. “By a new and living way…”
-
New (Prosphatos): The Greek term conveys something freshly slain yet continuously fresh, vibrant, and perpetual. Unlike the old sacrificial system, which required repeated animal sacrifices that could never permanently take away sins, this path is newly established and eternally valid.
-
Living (Zōsa): The way is termed “living” because it is mediated by the risen Lord who lives forever to make intercession for believers. Furthermore, walking in this way imparts eternal life and spiritual vitality to the believer, contrasting sharply with the old system of dead works and repeated sacrifices.
2. “…Which he hath consecrated for us…”
-
Consecrated (Enakainisen): To consecrate means to dedicate, inaugurate, or set open for holy use. Christ did not merely point toward a path; He actively inaugurated and opened it for humanity through His personal obedience and substitutionary death.
3. “…Through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;”
-
The Veil Metaphor: In the physical temple, the veil kept human beings out of the divine presence. However, at the moment of Christ’s death, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom (Matthew 27:51).
-
The Flesh of Christ: The author of Hebrews draws a direct parallel between the physical veil of the sanctuary and the flesh (physical body) of Jesus. As long as Christ’s physical body remained unbroken in earthly life, the full access through His death was not yet accomplished. But when His flesh was torn on the cross, the ultimate barrier separating humanity from God was shattered forever.
Theological Implications and Practical Application
-
Direct Access to God: Believers no longer require human priests, animal blood, or physical earthly sanctuaries to draw near to God. Through faith in Christ, every believer enjoys bold and direct communion with the Heavenly Father.
-
Assurance and Confidence: Because this way is established by God Himself, it provides unshakable spiritual confidence. Believers can approach the throne of grace without fear of condemnation.
-
A Call to Active Faith: A “living way” demands a living response. It invites believers to walk continuously in fellowship, prayer, obedience, and holy living, leaving behind the anxiety of ritualistic legalism.
