Comprehensive English Theological Explanation

Introduction: The Context of Paul’s Prayer

Ephesians 3:16 forms the heart of the Apostle Paul’s second recorded prayer in his letter to the church at Ephesus. Written from a prison cell in Rome, Paul does not petition God for physical deliverance, financial prosperity, or freedom from persecution. Instead, his apostolic desire focuses entirely on the spiritual fortification of the believer’s hidden life.

Paul bends his knees before the Father to ask for a divine infusion of spiritual power. To fully appreciate this verse, one must dismantle its key theological phrases: “according to the riches of His glory,” “to be strengthened with might by His Spirit,” and “in the inner man.”

A. “According to the Riches of His Glory” (The Source)

Paul does not pray that God would grant strength out of His riches, but according to (κατά / kata in Greek) the riches of His glory.

  • Out of His riches implies a fraction—a wealthy billionaire giving a beggar a single dollar.

  • According to His riches means giving in proportion to boundless, infinite abundance—a billionaire bestowing a gift commensurate with his massive estate.

God’s “glory” signifies the sum total of His divine attributes: His sovereignty, holiness, omnipotence, wisdom, and love. Because God’s glory is limitless, the reserve of spiritual power available to every believer is inexhaustible. Believers are never required to live spiritually depleted lives, because their source of power is the eternal wealth of God Himself.

B. “Strengthened with Might by His Spirit” (The Agency & Nature)

The word used for “might” in the original Greek text is dynamis ($\delta\acute{v}\nu\alpha\mu\iota\varsigma$), from which we derive the English words dynamic and dynamite. It refers to intrinsic, inherent, overcoming power.

This strength is not generated through human willpower, positive thinking, physical discipline, or mental toughness. It is injected into the believer directly by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit acts as the divine agent who imparts supernatural endurance, courage, and power to overcome temptation, fear, and spiritual warfare.

C. “In the Inner Man” (The Location)

The “inner man” (ὁ ἔσω ἄνθρωπος / ho eso anthropos) refers to the core of human personality—the heart, mind, conscience, and will. While the outer physical body naturally ages, weakens, and decays over time, the inner spiritual man can be renewed day by day (2 Corinthians 4:16).

Outer Man Inner Man
Physical Body, Senses, Shell Spirit, Mind, Heart, Will
Temporal, Subject to Decay Eternal, Subject to Spiritual Growth
Sustained by Physical Food & Rest Sustained by Holy Spirit & Word of God
Sensitive to Earthly Circumstances Anchored in Heavenly Glory

When the Holy Spirit fortifies the inner man:

  1. The Mind gains spiritual clarity and divine wisdom to discern truth from error.

  2. The Will receives divine resolve to obey God’s command and resist worldly passions.

  3. The Heart expands in faith, rooted in unshakeable love and hope.

Spiritual Application for Daily Living

  1. Endurance Through Trials: Suffering and hardship test the outer man. However, an inner man fortified by the Holy Spirit remains steady, calm, and joyful even in dark seasons.

  2. Victory Over Temptation: Sin appeals to the flesh. A strong inner man yields to the Holy Spirit, enabling the believer to mortify the deeds of the body and walk in purity.

  3. Preparing a Temple for Christ: In the verse that immediately follows (Ephesians 3:17), Paul states the result of this inner strengthening: “that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith.” The Spirit strengthens the inner house so that Christ may feel completely comfortable at home in our thoughts, choices, and desires.

(The Source of Power)

(The Divine Agent)

(The Inner Man)
