Part 1: Joshua Chapter 24 (Verses 24–33)

Joshua 24:24

Verse: And the people said unto Joshua The LORD our God will we serve and his voice will we obey

  • English Explanation: This is a public declaration of loyalty. The Israelites explicitly commit to not only serving God but specifically listening to and following His “voice” (commandments).

  • Urdu Explanation: لوگو ں نے یشوع سے کہا کہ ہم خُداوند اپنے خُدا کی عبادت کریں گے اور اُسی کی آواز پر عمل کریں گے۔ یہ بنی اسرائیل کا پختہ عہد تھا کہ وہ صرف اللہ کے وفادار رہیں گے۔

Joshua 24:25

Verse: So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem

  • English Explanation: Joshua formalizes the people’s promise into a legal and spiritual contract (covenant) at Shechem, establishing laws to guide their future behavior.

  • Urdu Explanation: یشوع نے اُس دن لوگوں کے ساتھ عہد باندھا اور سکم میں اُن کے لیے قانون اور آئین مقرر کیے۔ اس کا مقصد ان کے ایمان کو دستاویزی شکل دینا تھا۔

Joshua 24:26

Verse: And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God and took a great stone and set it up there under an oak that was by the sanctuary of the LORD

  • English Explanation: Joshua records the event in the sacred scriptures and places a large stone as a physical monument to ensure the covenant is never forgotten.

  • Urdu Explanation: یشوع نے ان باتوں کو خُدا کی شریعت کی کتاب میں لکھا اور ایک بڑا پتھر لے کر وہاں بلوط کے درخت کے نیچے کھڑا کر دیا جو خُداوند کے مقدس کے پاس تھا۔

Joshua 24:27

Verse: And Joshua said unto all the people Behold this stone shall be a witness unto us for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spake unto us it shall be therefore a witness unto you lest ye deny your God

  • English Explanation: Using poetic personification, Joshua claims the stone “heard” the promise. It serves as a permanent silent witness against them if they ever betray God.

  • Urdu Explanation: یشوع نے کہا کہ یہ پتھر ہمارے لیے گواہ ہوگا کیونکہ اِس نے اللہ کے تمام الفاظ سنے ہیں۔ یہ تمہارے خلاف گواہی دے گا اگر تم اپنے خُدا کا انکار کرو۔

Joshua 24:28

Verse: So Joshua let the people depart every man unto his inheritance

  • English Explanation: With the covenant sealed, Joshua dismisses the tribes to return to the lands they were assigned as their heritage.

  • Urdu Explanation: تب یشوع نے لوگوں کو رخصت کیا اور ہر شخص اپنی اپنی میراث (زمین) کی طرف چلا گیا۔

Joshua 24:29

Verse: And it came to pass after these things that Joshua the son of Nun the servant of the LORD died being an hundred and ten years old

  • English Explanation: The end of an era. Joshua dies at 110, having fulfilled his mission of leading Israel into the Promised Land.

  • Urdu Explanation: ان واقعات کے بعد نون کے بیٹے یشوع کا انتقال ہو گیا جو خُداوند کا خادم تھا۔ اس وقت اس کی عمر ایک سو دس سال تھی۔

Joshua 24:30

Verse: And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-serah which is in mount Ephraim on the north side of the hill of Gaash

  • English Explanation: Joshua is buried in his own allotted land in the hill country of Ephraim.

  • Urdu Explanation: اسے اس کی اپنی میراث کی سرحد تمنات سرح میں دفن کیا گیا جو افرائیم کے پہاڑی ملک میں واقع ہے۔

Joshua 24:31

Verse: And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua and which had known all the works of the LORD that he had done for Israel

  • English Explanation: This highlights the importance of leadership. As long as the eye-witnesses of God’s miracles were alive, the nation remained faithful.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب تک یشوع اور وہ بزرگ زندہ رہے جنہوں نے اللہ کے معجزات کو اپنی آنکھوں سے دیکھا تھا تب تک بنی اسرائیل خُداوند کی عبادت کرتے رہے۔

Joshua 24:32

Verse: And the bones of Joseph which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt buried they in Shechem in a parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for an hundred pieces of silver and it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph

  • English Explanation: Carrying out a centuries-old promise, the Israelites bury Joseph’s remains (brought from Egypt) in the land Jacob originally purchased.

  • Urdu Explanation: یوسف کی ہڈیاں جو وہ مصر سے لائے تھے سکم میں دفن کی گئیں۔ یہ وہی زمین تھی جو یعقوب نے سو سکوں میں خریدی تھی اور اب یہ یوسف کی اولاد کی میراث ٹھہری۔

Joshua 24:33

Verse: And Eleazar the son of Aaron died and they buried him in a hill that pertained to Phinehas his son which was given him in mount Ephraim

  • English Explanation: The death of the High Priest Eleazar marks the final passing of the generation that entered Canaan with Joshua.

  • Urdu Explanation: ہارون کے بیٹے الیعزر کا بھی انتقال ہو گیا اور اسے افرائیم کے پہاڑ میں اس کے بیٹے فینحاس کی زمین میں دفن کیا گیا۔


Part 2: Judges Chapter 1 (Verses 1–12)

Judges 1:1

Verse: Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass that the children of Israel asked the LORD saying Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first to fight against them

  • English Explanation: With no single successor to Joshua, the tribes seek divine guidance on which tribe should lead the next phase of the conquest.

  • Urdu Explanation: یشوع کی وفات کے بعد بنی اسرائیل نے خُداوند سے پوچھا کہ کنعانیوں سے لڑنے کے لیے سب سے پہلے کون جائے گا؟

Judges 1:2

Verse: And the LORD said Judah shall go up behold I have delivered the land into his hand

  • English Explanation: God appoints the tribe of Judah to take the lead, promising them victory.

  • Urdu Explanation: خُداوند نے فرمایا کہ یہوداہ پہلے جائے گا کیونکہ میں نے یہ ملک اس کے قبضے میں دے دیا ہے۔

Judges 1:3

Verse: And Judah said unto Simeon his brother Come up with me into my lot that we may fight against the Canaanites and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot So Simeon went with him

  • English Explanation: Judah forms an alliance with the tribe of Simeon (their geographic neighbor) to support each other in their respective battles.

  • Urdu Explanation: یہوداہ نے اپنے بھائی شمعون سے کہا کہ میرے ساتھ مل کر لڑو اور میں تمہارے علاقے میں تمہارا ساتھ دوں گا۔ چنانچہ شمعون ان کے ساتھ گیا۔

Judges 1:4

Verse: And Judah went up and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men

  • English Explanation: The alliance is successful. God grants them victory over two major groups, resulting in a significant defeat of the enemy at Bezek.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب یہوداہ لڑنے گیا تو اللہ نے کنعانیوں اور فرزیوں کو ان کے قبضے میں کر دیا اور انہوں نے بیزق میں دس ہزار آدمیوں کو قتل کیا۔

Judges 1:5

Verse: And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek and they fought against him and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites

  • English Explanation: They encounter the local warlord, Adoni-bezek, and defeat his combined forces.

  • Urdu Explanation: انہوں نے بیزق کے حاکم ادونی بیزق کو وہاں پایا اور اسے شکست دی۔

Judges 1:6

Verse: But Adoni-bezek fled and they pursued after him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and his great toes

  • English Explanation: The fleeing king is captured and mutilated. This specific punishment was meant to disable a warrior from holding a sword or running effectively.

  • Urdu Explanation: ادونی بیزق وہاں سے بھاگا لیکن انہوں نے اسے پکڑ لیا اور اس کے ہاتھوں اور پاؤں کے انگوٹھے کاٹ دیے۔

Judges 1:7

Verse: And Adoni-bezek said Threescore and ten kings having their thumbs and their great toes cut off gathered their meat under my table as I have done so God hath requited me And they brought him to Jerusalem and there he died

  • English Explanation: Adoni-bezek admits his fate is divine justice (karma), as he had treated 70 other kings the same way. He later dies in Jerusalem.

  • Urdu Explanation: ادونی بیزق نے اعتراف کیا کہ جیسا سلوک میں نے ستر بادشاہوں کے ساتھ کیا تھا اللہ نے ویسا ہی بدلہ مجھ سے لیا ہے۔ اسے یروشلم لایا گیا جہاں وہ مر گیا۔

Judges 1:8

Verse: Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem and had taken it and smitten it with the edge of the sword and set the city on fire

  • English Explanation: Judah captures the city of Jerusalem, destroys its inhabitants, and burns it.

  • Urdu Explanation: بنی یہوداہ نے یروشلم پر حملہ کر کے اسے فتح کر لیا اور اسے آگ لگا دی۔

Judges 1:9

Verse: And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites that dwelt in the mountain and in the south and in the valley

  • English Explanation: The campaign expands to various terrains: the hills, the Negeb (south), and the lowlands.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس کے بعد بنی یہوداہ پہاڑی علاقوں اور جنوبی حصوں میں آباد کنعانیوں سے لڑنے گئے۔

Judges 1:10

Verse: And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron now the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-arba and they slew Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai

  • English Explanation: Judah attacks Hebron and defeats three specific leaders (or clans), clearing the way for their settlement.

  • Urdu Explanation: یہوداہ نے حبرون کے کنعانیوں پر حملہ کیا اور وہاں کے سورماؤں (شیشی، اخیمن، تلمائی) کو شکست دی۔

Judges 1:11

Verse: And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher

  • English Explanation: The military campaign continues toward the city of Debir, formerly known as a center of learning or records (Kirjath-sepher).

  • Urdu Explanation: وہاں سے وہ دبیر کے باشندوں کے خلاف بڑھے جس کا پرانا نام قریت سفر تھا۔

Judges 1:12

Verse: And Caleb said He that smiteth Kirjath-sepher and taketh it to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife

  • English Explanation: Caleb, a leader in Judah, offers a reward for bravery: whoever leads the successful capture of the city will marry his daughter.

  • Urdu Explanation: کالب نے اعلان کیا کہ جو کوئی قریت سفر کو فتح کرے گا میں اپنی بیٹی عکسہ کی شادی اس سے کر دوں گا۔
