Verse-by-Verse Commentary: Judges 2:3 – 3:3

Judges 2:3

Verse: Wherefore I also said I will not drive them out from before you but they shall be as thorns in your sides and their gods shall be a snare unto you

  • English Explanation: Because Israel failed to obey God’s command to drive out the inhabitants of the land, God declares He will no longer assist them in their conquest. The remaining nations would become constant sources of pain (thorns) and their religions would become a spiritual trap (snare).

  • Urdu Explanation: چونکہ بنی اسرائیل نے خدا کے حکم کے مطابق ان قوموں کو ملک سے نہیں نکالا، اس لیے خدا نے فرمایا کہ اب وہ ان کو ان کے سامنے سے نہیں نکالے گا۔ وہ ان کے پہلوؤں میں کانٹوں کی طرح ہوں گے اور ان کے جھوٹے خدا ان کے لیے پھندا بن جائیں گے۔

Judges 2:4

Verse: And it came to pass when the angel of the LORD spake these words unto all the children of Israel that the people lifted up their voice and wept

  • English Explanation: Hearing the divine judgment, the people were struck with grief. They realized the gravity of their spiritual compromise and the difficult future ahead.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب خداوند کے فرشتے نے یہ باتیں بنی اسرائیل سے کہیں، تو لوگ زار و قطار رونے لگے کیونکہ انہیں اپنی غلطی اور آنے والی مصیبتوں کا احساس ہو گیا تھا۔

Judges 2:5

Verse: And they called the name of that place Bochim and they sacrificed there unto the LORD

  • English Explanation: The location was named “Bochim,” which means “Weepers.” Despite their tears, they offered sacrifices to God, seeking to restore their relationship with Him.

  • Urdu Explanation: انہوں نے اس جگہ کا نام “بوکیم” (رونے والے) رکھا اور وہاں خداوند کے لیے قربانیاں چڑھائیں۔

Judges 2:6

Verse: And when Joshua had let the people go the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land

  • English Explanation: This recalls the transition period after the initial conquest under Joshua, when the tribes went to settle in their allotted territories.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب یشوع نے لوگوں کو رخصت کیا، تو بنی اسرائیل کے لوگ اپنی اپنی میراث پر قبضہ کرنے کے لیے چلے گئے۔

Judges 2:7

Verse: And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua who had seen all the great works of the LORD that he did for Israel

  • English Explanation: Faithfulness lasted as long as the eyewitnesses of God’s miracles were alive. Personal experience with God’s power kept that generation grounded.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب تک یشوع اور وہ بزرگ زندہ رہے جنہوں نے خداوند کے بڑے کاموں کو اپنی آنکھوں سے دیکھا تھا، لوگ خداوند کی عبادت کرتے رہے۔

Judges 2:8

Verse: And Joshua the son of Nun the servant of the LORD died being an hundred and ten years old

  • English Explanation: Joshua, a faithful leader and servant of God, passed away at the age of 110, marking the end of an era of strong leadership.

  • Urdu Explanation: خداوند کا بندہ یشوع بن نون ایک سو دس برس کی عمر میں وفات پا گیا۔

Judges 2:9

Verse: And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres in the mount of Ephraim on the north side of the hill Gaash

  • English Explanation: Joshua was buried in his own land, a symbol of the rest he achieved for Israel, though the work remained unfinished.

  • Urdu Explanation: انہیں افراہیم کے پہاڑی علاقے میں، کوہِ عاش کے شمال میں، ان کی اپنی میراث تمنت حرس میں دفن کیا گیا۔

Judges 2:10

Verse: And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers and there arose another generation after them which knew not the LORD nor yet the works which he had done for Israel

  • English Explanation: A tragic shift occurs: the new generation grew up without a personal relationship with God or a memory of His miraculous intervention.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب وہ نسل ختم ہو گئی تو ایک ایسی نئی نسل پیدا ہوئی جو نہ تو خداوند کو جانتی تھی اور نہ ہی ان کاموں کو جو اس نے اسرائیل کے لیے کیے تھے۔

Judges 2:11

Verse: And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD and served Baalim

  • English Explanation: Abandoning their heritage, the Israelites began to worship “Baalim” (plural of Baal), the local Canaanite storm and fertility gods.

  • Urdu Explanation: بنی اسرائیل نے خداوند کی نظر میں بدی کی اور بعلیم (بتوں) کی پوجا شروع کر دی۔

Judges 2:12

Verse: And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers which brought them out of the land of Egypt and followed other gods of the gods of the people that were round about them and bowed themselves unto them and provoked the LORD to anger

  • English Explanation: They turned their backs on the God who rescued them from slavery, choosing instead to imitate the pagan cultures surrounding them.

  • Urdu Explanation: انہوں نے اپنے باپ دادا کے خدا کو چھوڑ دیا جو انہیں مصر سے نکال لایا تھا، اور اپنے اردگرد کی قوموں کے معبودوں کے پیچھے چلنے لگے، جس سے خداوند کو غصہ آیا۔

Judges 2:13

Verse: And they forsook the LORD and served Baal and Ashtaroth

  • English Explanation: Specifically, they turned to Baal (the male deity) and Ashtaroth (the female deity), gods associated with agriculture and fertility.

  • Urdu Explanation: انہوں نے خداوند کو ترک کر دیا اور بعل اور استارات کی پرستش کی۔

Judges 2:14

Verse: And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies

  • English Explanation: Divine protection was withdrawn. God allowed invaders to plunder Israel, making them physically and militarily weak.

  • Urdu Explanation: خداوند کا غصہ اسرائیل پر بھڑکا اور اس نے انہیں لوٹنے والوں کے حوالے کر دیا، یہاں تک کہ وہ اپنے دشمنوں کے سامنے ٹھہر نہ سکے۔

Judges 2:15

Verse: Whithersoever they went out the hand of the LORD was against them for evil as the LORD had said and as the LORD had sworn unto them and they were greatly distressed

  • English Explanation: Every endeavor failed because God was now opposing them to bring them to repentance. They suffered great misery.

  • Urdu Explanation: جہاں کہیں وہ جاتے، خداوند کا ہاتھ ان کے خلاف ہوتا تھا جیسا کہ اس نے پہلے ہی خبردار کر دیا تھا، اور وہ بڑی مصیبت میں پھنس گئے۔

Judges 2:16

Verse: Nevertheless the LORD raised up judges which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them

  • English Explanation: Despite their rebellion, God showed mercy by raising up “Judges”—military and civil leaders—to rescue them from oppression.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس کے باوجود، خداوند نے قاضی مقرر کیے جنہوں نے انہیں لوٹنے والوں کے ہاتھوں سے نجات دلائی۔

Judges 2:17

Verse: And yet they would not hearken unto their judges but they went a whoring after other gods and bowed themselves unto them they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in obeying the commandments of the LORD but they did not so

  • English Explanation: The people were unfaithful even to the leaders God sent. They were “spiritually adulterous,” quickly abandoning the path of their ancestors.

  • Urdu Explanation: لیکن انہوں نے اپنے قاضیوں کی بھی نہ سنی اور غیر معبودوں کی پوجا کرنے لگے اور اس راستے سے بھٹک گئے جس پر ان کے باپ دادا چلتے تھے۔

Judges 2:18

Verse: And when the LORD raised them up judges then the LORD was with the judge and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them

  • English Explanation: God’s compassion was triggered by the suffering and cries of His people. He empowered the Judges to give Israel peace as long as the Judge lived.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب خداوند ان کے لیے کوئی قاضی پیدا کرتا تو وہ اس کے ساتھ ہوتا اور اسے دشمنوں سے نجات دلاتا، کیونکہ خداوند ان کی آہوں اور تکلیفوں کو دیکھ کر ان پر رحم کرتا تھا۔

Judges 2:19

Verse: And it came to pass when the judge was dead that they returned and corrupted themselves more than their fathers in following other gods to serve them and to bow down unto them they ceased not from their own doings nor from their stubborn way

  • English Explanation: As soon as a leader died, the people reverted to sin, becoming even more corrupt than the previous generation. This shows the depth of their stubbornness.

  • Urdu Explanation: لیکن قاضی کی وفات کے بعد وہ پھر بگڑ جاتے اور اپنے باپ دادا سے بھی زیادہ برے کام کرتے اور اپنے سرکش طریقوں سے باز نہ آتے۔

Judges 2:20

Verse: And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel and he said Because that this people hath transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers and have not hearkened unto my voice

  • English Explanation: Due to the repeated breaking of the sacred Covenant, God determines to execute a lasting consequence.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس لیے خداوند کا غصہ اسرائیل پر بھڑکا اور اس نے فرمایا کہ چونکہ اس قوم نے میرے عہد کو توڑ دیا ہے اور میری بات نہیں مانی؛

Judges 2:21

Verse: I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died

  • English Explanation: God decides to leave the remaining pagan nations in the land instead of helping Israel conquer them.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس لیے اب میں بھی ان قوموں کو ان کے سامنے سے نہیں نکالوں گا جنہیں یشوع نے اپنی موت کے وقت چھوڑا تھا۔

Judges 2:22

Verse: That through them I may prove Israel whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk therein as their fathers did keep it or not

  • English Explanation: The presence of these nations served as a “test” or “proof” of Israel’s heart—to see if they would choose God or the idols of their neighbors.

  • Urdu Explanation: تاکہ ان کے ذریعے میں اسرائیل کو آزماؤں کہ آیا وہ خداوند کی راہ پر چلیں گے جیسا کہ ان کے باپ دادا چلے تھے یا نہیں۔

Judges 2:23

Verse: Therefore the LORD left those nations without driving them out hastily neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua

  • English Explanation: God intentionally slowed the conquest, ensuring that these nations remained as a long-term challenge to Israel’s faithfulness.

  • Urdu Explanation: اسی لیے خداوند نے ان قوموں کو رہنے دیا اور انہیں فوراً نہیں نکالا۔

Judges 3:1

Verse: Now these are the nations which the LORD left to prove Israel by them even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan

  • English Explanation: These nations remained to test the younger generation who had not personally experienced the miraculous battles of the initial conquest.

  • Urdu Explanation: یہ وہ قومیں ہیں جنہیں خداوند نے اسرائیل کو آزمانے کے لیے چھوڑ دیا تھا، خاص طور پر ان کے لیے جنہوں نے کنعان کی جنگیں نہیں دیکھی تھیں۔

Judges 3:2

Verse: Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know to teach them war at the least such as before knew nothing thereof

  • English Explanation: Beyond a spiritual test, God used this to ensure the new generation learned the necessity of relying on Him through the experience of warfare.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس کا مقصد یہ تھا کہ بنی اسرائیل کی نسلیں جنگ کرنا سیکھیں، خاص کر وہ جنہوں نے پہلے کبھی جنگ نہیں دیکھی تھی۔

Judges 3:3

Verse: Namely five lords of the Philistines and all the Canaanites and the Sidonians and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon from mount Baal-hermon unto the entering in of Hamath

  • English Explanation: This lists the specific groups left in the land, including the powerful Philistine pentarchy and various northern tribes.

  • Urdu Explanation: ان میں فلسطینیوں کے پانچ سردار، تمام کنعانی، صیدانی، اور حوی شامل تھے جو لبنان کے پہاڑوں میں بعل ہرمون سے حمات تک رہتے تھے۔
