The Book of Ruth: Chapters 3 & 4 Commentary

Verse 3:9

Verse: And he said Who art thou? And she answered I am Ruth thine handmaid spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid for thou art a near kinsman.

  • English Explanation: Ruth identifies herself and asks Boaz for protection and marriage. “Spreading the skirt” was a symbolic request for marriage and guardianship under the Hebrew law of the “Kinsman-Redeemer.”

  • Urdu Explanation: روت نے اپنی پہچان کرائی اور بوعز سے تحفظ اور شادی کی درخواست کی۔ “دامن پھیلانے” کا مطلب عبرانی قانون کے تحت شادی اور سرپرستی کا مطالبہ کرنا تھا، کیونکہ بوعز ان کا قریبی رشتہ دار (مخلصی دینے والا) تھا۔

Verse 3:10

Verse: And he said Blessed be thou of the LORD my daughter for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning inasmuch as thou followedst not young men whether poor or rich.

  • English Explanation: Boaz blesses Ruth for her loyalty. He notes that she chose a responsible relative over younger men, prioritizing her family’s lineage over personal romantic interest.

  • Urdu Explanation: بوعز نے روت کی وفاداری کی تعریف کی۔ اس نے نوٹ کیا کہ روت نے اپنی پسند کے بجائے خاندان کی بقا کو ترجیح دی اور کسی جوان مرد کے پیچھے جانے کے بجائے ایک ذمہ دار رشتہ دار کا انتخاب کیا۔

Verse 3:11

Verse: And now my daughter fear not I will do to thee all that thou requirest for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman.

  • English Explanation: Boaz reassures Ruth. He confirms that her reputation as a woman of high moral character is well-known throughout Bethlehem.

  • Urdu Explanation: بوعز نے روت کو تسلی دی اور کہا کہ وہ اس کی ہر ضرورت پوری کرے گا۔ اس نے تصدیق کی کہ پورا شہر روت کی پاکدامنی اور نیک سیرت سے واقف ہے۔

Verse 3:12

Verse: And now it is true that I am thy near kinsman howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I.

  • English Explanation: Boaz acts with integrity. He admits he is a redeemer but reveals there is another relative with a more direct legal claim to Naomi’s estate.

  • Urdu Explanation: بوعز نے دیانت داری کا ثبوت دیتے ہوئے بتایا کہ اگرچہ وہ مخلص (چھڑانے والا) ہے، لیکن ایک اور رشتہ دار ہے جس کا حق بوعز سے پہلے بنتا ہے۔

Verse 3:13

Verse: Tarry this night and it shall be in the morning that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman well let him do the kinsman’s part but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee as the LORD liveth lie down until the morning.

  • English Explanation: Boaz promises to resolve the legal matter the next day. If the closer relative refuses, Boaz vows by God’s name to marry and redeem her himself.

  • Urdu Explanation: بوعز نے وعدہ کیا کہ وہ اگلی صبح اس معاملے کو حل کرے گا۔ اگر وہ دوسرا رشتہ دار انکار کرتا ہے، تو بوعز نے خدا کی قسم کھا کر کہا کہ وہ خود روت کا حق ادا کرے گا۔

Verse 3:14

Verse: And she lay at his feet until the morning and she rose up before one could know another And he said Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor.

  • English Explanation: Ruth stays until dawn to maintain safety but leaves early to protect both their reputations from unnecessary gossip.

  • Urdu Explanation: روت صبح ہونے تک وہاں ٹھہری لیکن بدنامی سے بچنے کے لیے اجالے سے پہلے ہی چلی گئی تاکہ بوعز اور اس کی ساکھ محفوظ رہے۔

Verse 3:15

Verse: Also he said Bring the vail that thou hast upon thee and hold it And when she held it he measured six measures of barley and laid it on her and she went into the city.

  • English Explanation: Boaz gives Ruth a generous gift of barley, symbolizing his provision and a promise to Naomi that they will not be left empty-handed.

  • Urdu Explanation: بوعز نے روت کو چھ پیمانے جو تحفے میں دیے، جو اس بات کی علامت تھی کہ وہ روت اور نعومی کو خالی ہاتھ نہیں چھوڑے گا۔

Verse 3:16

Verse: And when she came to her mother in law she said Who art thou my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her.

  • English Explanation: Ruth returns to Naomi, who asks about the outcome. Ruth recounts everything Boaz promised and did.

  • Urdu Explanation: روت اپنی ساس کے پاس واپس آئی اور اسے بوعز کے تمام وعدوں اور اس کے حسنِ سلوک کے بارے میں بتایا۔

Verse 3:17

Verse: And she said These six measures of barley gave he me for he said to me Go not empty unto thy mother in law.

  • English Explanation: Ruth emphasizes that Boaz specifically intended the grain for Naomi, showing his respect for the elder woman.

  • Urdu Explanation: روت نے واضح کیا کہ بوعز نے یہ اناج خاص طور پر نعومی کے لیے دیا ہے تاکہ وہ خالی ہاتھ نہ رہے۔

Verse 3:18

Verse: Then said she Sit still my daughter until thou know how the matter will fall for the man will not be in rest until he have finished the thing this day.

  • English Explanation: Naomi advises patience, knowing Boaz is a man of action who will finalize the legal proceedings immediately.

  • Urdu Explanation: نعومی نے روت کو صبر کرنے کا مشورہ دیا کیونکہ اسے یقین تھا کہ بوعز آج ہی کے دن اس معاملے کا حتمی فیصلہ کر لے گا۔

Chapter 4

Verse 4:1

Verse: Then went Boaz up to the gate and sat him down there and behold the kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by unto whom he said Ho such a one! turn aside sit down here And he turned aside and sat down.

  • English Explanation: Boaz goes to the city gate—the official place for legal transactions—and summons the closer relative to discuss the redemption.

  • Urdu Explanation: بوعز شہر کے پھاٹک پر گیا، جو کہ قانونی معاملات کی جگہ تھی، اور اس رشتہ دار کو بلایا جس کا حق مقدم تھا۔

Verse 4:2

Verse: And he took ten men of the elders of the city and said Sit ye down here And they sat down.

  • English Explanation: Boaz assembles a legal quorum of ten elders to witness and validate the transaction.

  • Urdu Explanation: بوعز نے شہر کے دس معزز بزرگوں کو گواہ کے طور پر بلایا تاکہ کارروائی قانونی اور شفاف ہو۔

Verse 4:3

Verse: And he said unto the kinsman Naomi that is come again out of the country of Moab selleth a parcel of land which was our brother Elimelech’s.

  • English Explanation: Boaz presents the case: Naomi needs to sell the land belonging to her late husband, Elimelech.

  • Urdu Explanation: بوعز نے معاملہ پیش کیا کہ نعومی، جو موآب سے واپس آئی ہے، اپنے مرحوم شوہر الیمک کی زمین فروخت کرنا چاہتی ہے۔

Verse 4:4

Verse: And I thought to advertise thee saying Buy it before the inhabitants and before the elders of my people If thou wilt redeem it redeem it but if thou wilt not redeem it then tell me that I may know for there is none to redeem it beside thee and I am after thee And he said I will redeem it.

  • English Explanation: Boaz offers the relative the first right to buy. Initially, the man agrees because he only considers the financial gain of the land.

  • Urdu Explanation: بوعز نے رشتہ دار کو پہلا حق دیا کہ وہ زمین خرید لے۔ شروع میں وہ شخص راضی ہو گیا کیونکہ اس نے صرف زمین کے فائدے کو دیکھا۔

Verse 4:5

Verse: Then said Boaz What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess the wife of the dead to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.

  • English Explanation: Boaz adds the condition: buying the land includes marrying Ruth to continue the deceased husband’s lineage.

  • Urdu Explanation: بوعز نے شرط رکھی کہ زمین خریدنے کے ساتھ ساتھ اسے روت سے شادی بھی کرنی ہوگی تاکہ مرحوم کا نام اس کی میراث میں زندہ رہے۔

Verse 4:6

Verse: And the kinsman said I cannot redeem it for myself lest I mar mine own inheritance redeem thou my right to thyself for I cannot redeem it.

  • English Explanation: The relative declines, fearing that supporting Ruth and a potential new heir would complicate his own children’s inheritance.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس رشتہ دار نے انکار کر دیا، کیونکہ اسے ڈر تھا کہ روت سے شادی اور نئی اولاد اس کی اپنی موروثی جائیداد میں مسائل پیدا کرے گی۔

Verse 4:7

Verse: Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing for to confirm all things a man plucked off his shoe and gave it to his neighbour and this was a testimony in Israel.

  • English Explanation: This describes an ancient Hebrew custom where taking off a shoe symbolized the transfer of property rights.

  • Urdu Explanation: یہ اسرائیل کا ایک قدیم رواج تھا جس میں جوتا اتارنا جائیداد کے حقوق کی منتقلی کی علامت سمجھا جاتا تھا۔

Verse 4:8

Verse: Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz Buy it for thee So he drew off his shoe.

  • English Explanation: The relative officially transfers his right to Boaz by removing his shoe.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس رشتہ دار نے اپنا جوتا اتار کر بوعز کو اپنا حق قانونی طور پر منتقل کر دیا۔

Verse 4:9

Verse: And Boaz said unto the elders and unto all the people Ye are witnesses this day that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s of the hand of Naomi.

  • English Explanation: Boaz declares to the witnesses that he has legally purchased the entire estate of Elimelech and his sons.

  • Urdu Explanation: بوعز نے بزرگوں اور لوگوں کو گواہ بنا کر اعلان کیا کہ اس نے الیمک اور اس کے بیٹوں کی تمام جائیداد خرید لی ہے۔

Verse 4:10

Verse: Moreover Ruth the Moabitess the wife of Mahlon have I purchased to be my wife to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren and from the gate of his place ye are witnesses this day.

  • English Explanation: Boaz announces his marriage to Ruth, fulfilling the role of the redeemer and ensuring the family name continues.

  • Urdu Explanation: بوعز نے روت سے شادی کا اعلان کیا تاکہ خاندان کا نام ختم نہ ہو اور اس نے لوگوں کو اس عہد کا گواہ ٹھہرایا۔

Verse 4:11

Verse: And all the people that were in the gate and the elders said We are witnesses The LORD make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah which two did build the house of Israel and do thou worthily in Ephratah and be famous in Bethlehem.

  • English Explanation: The elders bless the union, comparing Ruth to the matriarchs Rachel and Leah, and praying for Boaz’s continued prosperity.

  • Urdu Explanation: بزرگوں اور لوگوں نے اس ملاپ کو برکت دی اور روت کی تشبیہ راخل اور لیاہ سے دی، اور بوعز کے لیے بیت اللحم میں شہرت اور خوشحالی کی دعا کی۔
