2 Samuel Chapter

1 Samuel Chapter 31

Verse 5

Verse: And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead he fell likewise upon his sword and died with him

  • English Explanation: Upon witnessing the suicide of the King, the armor-bearer followed suit. This act reflects a mixture of extreme loyalty, despair, and the fear of being tortured by the approaching Philistines. It marks the total collapse of Saul’s immediate military circle.

Verse 6

Verse: So Saul died and his three sons and his armourbearer and all his men that same day together

  • English Explanation: This verse summarizes the magnitude of the tragedy. It wasn’t just a king who died, but the royal lineage (including Jonathan) and his entire personal guard. It signifies the end of the first dynasty of Israel.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Verse 7

Verse: And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley and they that were on the other side Jordan saw that the men of Israel fled and that Saul and his sons were dead they forsook the cities and fled and the Philistines came and dwelt in them

  • English Explanation: The military defeat led to a civilian panic. When the Israelites across the valley and Jordan saw the leadership had fallen, they abandoned their homes. This allowed the Philistines to occupy central Israeli territory, dividing the land.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Verse 8

Verse: And it came to pass on the morrow when the Philistines came to strip the slain that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in mount Gilboa

  • English Explanation: The day after the battle, the Philistines returned to loot the corpses. Finding the bodies of the King and his sons provided them with ultimate proof of their victory.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Verse 9

Verse: And they cut off his head and stripped off his armour and sent into the land of the Philistines round about to publish it in the house of their idols and among the people

  • English Explanation: To humiliate Israel and celebrate their gods, the Philistines decapitated Saul. They sent his armor and news of the victory throughout their land as a trophy of war.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Verse 10

Verse: And they put his armour in the house of Ashtaroth and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan

  • English Explanation: Saul’s armor was placed in a pagan temple as an offering to their goddess, while his body was hung on the walls of Beth-shan as a public display of disgrace.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Verse 11

Verse: And when the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard of that which the Philistines had done to Saul

  • English Explanation: The people of Jabesh-gilead had a historical debt to Saul (from 1 Samuel 11). Hearing of this dishonor moved them to action.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Verse 12

Verse: All the valiant men arose and went all night and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan and came to Jabesh and burnt them there

  • English Explanation: Brave men risked their lives by traveling through enemy territory at night to rescue the royal bodies. They brought them back and cremated them to prevent further desecration.

Verse 13

Verse: And they took their bones and buried them under a tree at Jabesh and fasted seven days

  • English Explanation: They gave the remains a proper burial and observed a week of mourning, showing deep respect for their fallen leader.

  • Urdu Explanation:

2 Samuel Chapter 1

Verse 1

Verse: Now it came to pass after the death of Saul when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites and David had abode two days in Ziklag

  • English Explanation: This sets the timeline. While Saul was dying at Gilboa, David was recovering from a victory over the Amalekites who had burned his town, Ziklag.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Verse 2

Verse: It came even to pass on the third day that behold a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent and earth upon his head and so it was when he came to David that he fell to the earth and did obeisance

  • English Explanation: A messenger arrives from the battlefield. His torn clothes and dirt on his head were traditional signs of deep grief and disaster.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Verse 3

Verse: And David said unto him From whence comest thou And he said unto him Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped

  • English Explanation: David asks for his origin. The man confirms he has just fled from the site of the Israeli army’s defeat.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Verse 4

Verse: And David said unto him How went the matter I pray thee tell me And he answered That the people are fled from the battle and many of the people also are fallen and dead and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also

  • English Explanation: David is anxious for news. The messenger delivers the worst possible report: the army has fled, many are dead, and specifically, the King and his heir Jonathan are gone.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Verse 5

Verse: And David said unto the young man that told him How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son be dead

  • English Explanation: David, perhaps hoping the news is a rumor, asks for proof or a first-hand account.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Verse 6

Verse: And the young man that told him said As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa behold Saul leaned upon his spear and lo the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him

  • English Explanation: The messenger claims he was on Mount Gilboa and saw Saul wounded and surrounded by enemy forces.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Verse 7

Verse: And when he looked behind him he saw me and called unto me And I answered Here am I

  • English Explanation: The man continues his story, claiming Saul spotted him and called out for assistance in his final moments.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Verse 8

Verse: And he said unto me Who art thou And I answered him I am an Amalekite

  • English Explanation: Saul asks for his identity. Ironically, the man identifies as an Amalekite—the very people Saul was commanded to destroy earlier in his reign.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Verse 9

Verse: He said unto me again Stand I pray thee upon me and slay me for anguish is come upon me because my life is yet whole in me

  • English Explanation: The messenger claims Saul begged him to deliver a “mercy killing” because he was in agony but not yet dead.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Verse 10

Verse: So I stood upon him and slew him because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen and I took the crown that was upon his head and the bracelet that was on his arm and have brought them hither unto my lord

  • English Explanation: The Amalekite admits to killing Saul (contradicting the account in 1 Samuel 31) and presents Saul’s crown and jewelry to David, likely hoping for a reward.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Verse 11

Verse: Then David took hold on his clothes and rent them and likewise all the men that were with him

  • English Explanation: Instead of celebrating the death of his rival, David is overcome with grief and tears his clothes in mourning.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Verse 12

Verse: And they mourned and wept and fasted until even for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of the LORD and for the house of Israel because they were fallen by the sword

  • English Explanation: David and his men spent the day weeping and fasting. They mourned not just for Jonathan, but for the King and the national defeat of Israel.

  • Urdu Explanation:
