2 Kings Chapter 1: Verse-by-Verse Commentary
Verse 1
Verse: Then Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab English Explanation: This verse sets the political stage. Following the death of King Ahab, the nation of Moab saw an opportunity to break free from Israel’s control and stop paying tribute, signaling a period of decline for the Northern Kingdom. Urdu Explanation: یہ آیت اس وقت کی سیاسی صورتحال کو واضح کرتی ہے۔ بادشاہ اخی اب کی موت کے بعد، موآب کی قوم نے اسرائیل کی غلامی سے آزادی حاصل کرنے اور خراج دینے سے انکار کر دیا، جو اسرائیل کی کمزوری کا نشان تھا۔
Verse 2
Verse: And Ahaziah fell down through a lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria and was sick and he sent messengers and said unto them Go enquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover of this disease English Explanation: King Ahaziah suffers a severe injury. Instead of seeking the God of Israel, he turns to a Philistine deity, Baal-zebub. This act of spiritual adultery shows his lack of faith in the true God. Urdu Explanation: بادشاہ اخزیاہ اپنے محل کی بالائی منزل کی جالی سے گر کر سخت زخمی ہو گیا۔ اسرائیل کے سچے خدا سے رجوع کرنے کے بجائے، اس نے عقرون کے جھوٹے دیوتا بعل زبوب سے مشورہ لینے کے لیے قاصد بھیجے، جو اس کی بے ایمانی کا ثبوت تھا۔
Verse 3
Verse: But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite Arise go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and say unto them Is it not because there is not a God in Israel that ye go to enquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron English Explanation: God intervenes by sending Elijah to intercept the messengers. The question posed is a stinging rebuke: Does the King act as if God does not exist in his own land? Urdu Explanation: خداوند کے فرشتے نے ایلیاہ تشبی کو حکم دیا کہ وہ بادشاہ کے قاصدوں کا راستہ روکے۔ ایلیاہ نے ان سے پوچھا کہ کیا اسرائیل میں کوئی خدا نہیں ہے جو تم عقرون کے دیوتا کے پاس جا رہے ہو؟ یہ ایک سخت ملامت تھی۔
Verse 4
Verse: Now therefore thus saith the LORD Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up but shalt surely die And Elijah departed English Explanation: Because of Ahaziah’s defiance and idolatry, a divine sentence is passed. He is told he will never recover from his injuries and will die in that very bed. Urdu Explanation: اخزیاہ کی بت پرستی اور نافرمانی کی وجہ سے خدا نے فیصلہ سنا دیا کہ وہ اس بستر سے کبھی نہیں اٹھے گا بلکہ ضرور مر جائے گا۔ اس پیغام کے بعد ایلیاہ وہاں سے چلا گیا۔
Verse 5
Verse: And when the messengers turned back unto him he said unto them Why are ye now turned back English Explanation: The messengers return much sooner than expected. Ahaziah is surprised and questions why they have come back without reaching Ekron. Urdu Explanation: قاصد بہت جلد واپس آگئے۔ بادشاہ حیران ہوا اور ان سے پوچھا کہ وہ اتنی جلدی واپس کیوں آ گئے ہیں جبکہ انہیں عقرون تک جانا تھا۔
Verse 6
Verse: And they said unto him There came a man up to meet us and said unto us Go turn again unto the king that sent you and say unto him Thus saith the LORD Is it not because there is not a God in Israel that thou sendest to enquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron therefore thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up but shalt surely die English Explanation: The messengers repeat Elijah’s message word for word. They report that a man confronted them with the Lord’s declaration of the King’s impending death. Urdu Explanation: قاصدوں نے بتایا کہ ایک شخص انہیں ملا جس نے کہا کہ واپس جاؤ اور بادشاہ سے کہو کہ کیا اسرائیل میں خدا نہیں جو تم بعل زبوب کے پاس بھیج رہے ہو؟ اب تم اس بستر سے زندہ نہیں اٹھو گے۔
Verse 7
Verse: And he said unto them What manner of man was he which came up to meet you and told you these words English Explanation: Ahaziah seeks to identify this bold individual. He asks for a physical description to confirm if it is his long-time adversary, Elijah. Urdu Explanation: اخزیاہ نے اس شخص کی شناخت جاننے کی کوشش کی۔ اس نے قاصدوں سے پوچھا کہ وہ شخص دیکھنے میں کیسا تھا جس نے یہ کلام کیا۔
Verse 8
Verse: And they answered him He was an hairy man and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins And he said It is Elijah the Tishbite English Explanation: The description of a “hairy man” with a leather belt was the trademark appearance of Elijah. Ahaziah immediately recognizes the prophet. Urdu Explanation: انہوں نے جواب دیا کہ وہ ایک بالدار آدمی تھا جس نے کمر پر چمڑے کا پٹکا باندھا ہوا تھا۔ بادشاہ فوراً پہچان گیا کہ وہ ایلیاہ تشبی ہے۔
Verse 9
Verse: Then the king sent unto him a captain of fifty with his fifty And he went up to him and behold he sat on the top of an hill And he spake unto him Thou man of God the king hath said Come down English Explanation: Ahaziah sends soldiers to arrest Elijah. The captain uses the title “Man of God” but speaks with a tone of worldly authority, commanding the prophet to surrender. Urdu Explanation: بادشاہ نے ایلیاہ کو گرفتار کرنے کے لیے پچاس سپاہیوں کا ایک دستہ بھیجا۔ کپتان نے ایلیاہ کو “مردِ خدا” کہہ کر پکارا مگر حکمیہ انداز میں نیچے آنے کو کہا۔
Verse 10
Verse: And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty If I be a man of God then let fire come down from heaven and consume thee and thy fifty And there came down fire from heaven and consumed him and his fifty English Explanation: Elijah invokes God’s power to prove his status. If he is truly God’s servant, God will defend him. Heavenly fire falls, destroying the soldiers who came with hostile intent. Urdu Explanation: ایلیاہ نے جواب دیا کہ اگر میں مردِ خدا ہوں تو آسمان سے آگ گرے اور تمہیں بھسم کر دے۔ چنانچہ آسمان سے آگ گری اور ان پچاسوں کو ہلاک کر دیا۔
Verse 11
Verse: Again also he sent unto him another captain of fifty with his fifty And he answered and said unto him O man of God thus hath the king said Come down quickly English Explanation: Instead of repenting, Ahaziah stubbornly sends a second group. This captain is even more arrogant, demanding that Elijah come down “quickly.” Urdu Explanation: توبہ کرنے کے بجائے بادشاہ نے ایک اور دستہ بھیجا۔ یہ کپتان اور بھی زیادہ مغرور تھا اور اس نے ایلیاہ کو “فوراً” نیچے آنے کا حکم دیا۔
Verse 12
Verse: And Elijah answered and said unto them If I be a man of God let fire come down from heaven and consume thee and thy fifty And the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty English Explanation: The judgment is repeated. The second group of fifty is also consumed by fire, showing that God’s prophets are not to be trifled with by earthly kings. Urdu Explanation: ایک بار پھر وہی فیصلہ دہرایا گیا۔ خدا کی طرف سے آگ گری اور اس دوسرے مغرور دستے کو بھی راکھ کر دیا، جو خدا کے جلال کی علامت تھا۔
Verse 13
Verse: And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty And the third captain of fifty went up and came and fell on his knees before Elijah and besought him and said unto him O man of God I pray thee let my life and the life of these fifty thy servants be precious in thy sight English Explanation: The third captain shows wisdom and humility. He acknowledges the power of God and begs for mercy, valuing the lives of his men over the King’s command. Urdu Explanation: تیسرے کپتان نے عقلمندی اور عاجزی دکھائی۔ اس نے ایلیاہ کے سامنے گھٹنے ٹیک کر رحم کی بھیک مانگی اور اپنی اور اپنے سپاہیوں کی جان بخشی کی درخواست کی۔
Verse 14
Verse: Behold there came fire down from heaven and burnt up the two captains of the former fifties with their fifties therefore let my life now be precious in thy sight English Explanation: The captain references the previous destruction as a reason for his fear and reverence. He recognizes that without God’s mercy, he too will perish. Urdu Explanation: کپتان نے پچھلے دو دستوں کی ہلاکت کا ذکر کیا اور تسلیم کیا کہ وہ خدا کی قدرت سے واقف ہے، اس لیے اس نے اپنی زندگی کے لیے التجا کی۔
Verse 15
Verse: And the angel of the LORD said unto Elijah Go down with him be not afraid of him And he arose and went down with him unto the king English Explanation: Because of the captain’s humility, God instructs Elijah to go safely. Elijah shows no fear of the King, only obedience to the Lord. Urdu Explanation: خدا کے فرشتے نے ایلیاہ سے کہا کہ اب اس کے ساتھ نیچے جاؤ اور مت ڈرو۔ ایلیاہ خدا کے حکم پر عمل کرتے ہوئے بادشاہ کے پاس جانے کے لیے تیار ہو گیا۔
Verse 16
Verse: And he said unto him Thus saith the LORD Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to enquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron is it not because there is no God in Israel to enquire of his word therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up but shalt surely die English Explanation: Elijah delivers the judgment directly to Ahaziah’s face. The message remains unchanged: the King’s reliance on a false god sealed his fate. Urdu Explanation: ایلیاہ نے بادشاہ کے سامنے کھڑے ہو کر وہی کلام سنایا کہ چونکہ تم نے اسرائیل کے خدا کو چھوڑ کر غیر معبودوں سے رجوع کیا، اس لیے اب تم اس بستر سے زندہ نہیں اٹھو گے بلکہ مر جاؤ گے۔
