2 Kings Chapter

Verse-by-Verse Commentary

2 Kings 12:21

Verse: For Jozachar the son of Shimeath and Jehozabad the son of Shomer his servants smote him and he died and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David and Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.

  • English Explanation: This verse concludes the tragic reign of Joash of Judah. Despite his early reforms, his life ended in a conspiracy by his own officials. He was buried in Jerusalem, and his son Amaziah took the throne, ensuring the Davidic line continued despite the internal betrayal.

  • Urdu Explanation:

2 Kings 13:1

Verse: In the three and twentieth year of Joash the son of Ahaziah king of Judah Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria and reigned seventeen years.

  • English Explanation: The narrative shifts back to the Northern Kingdom (Israel). Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, took power in Samaria while Joash was still ruling in Judah.

  • Urdu Explanation:

2 Kings 13:2

Verse: And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat which made Israel to sin he departed not therefrom.

  • English Explanation: Jehoahaz continued the spiritual decline of Israel by maintaining the golden calf worship established by Jeroboam I, refusing to return to the true worship of God.

  • Urdu Explanation:

2 Kings 13:3

Verse: And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel and he delivered them into the hand of Hazael king of Syria and into the hand of Benhadad the son of Hazael all their days.

  • English Explanation: Because of Israel’s idolatry, God allowed the Syrian kings, Hazael and Ben-hadad, to oppress and defeat them throughout the reign of Jehoahaz.

  • Urdu Explanation:

2 Kings 13:4

Verse: And Jehoahaz besought the LORD and the LORD hearkened unto him for he saw the oppression of Israel because the king of Syria oppressed them.

  • English Explanation: In extreme distress, Jehoahaz prayed for help. Despite his sins, God showed mercy because He witnessed the cruel suffering the Syrians inflicted on the people.

  • Urdu Explanation:

2 Kings 13:5

Verse: And the LORD gave Israel a saviour so that they went out from under the hand of the Syrians and the children of Israel dwelt in their tents as beforetime.

  • English Explanation: God provided a “deliverer” (likely a reference to King Adad-nirari III of Assyria who weakened Syria, or later Israeli kings) to break the Syrian grip, allowing a temporary return to peace.

  • Urdu Explanation:

2 Kings 13:6

Verse: Nevertheless they departed not from the sins of the house of Jeroboam who made Israel sin but walked therein and there remained the grove also in Samaria.

  • English Explanation: Despite God’s mercy, the nation remained unrepentant. They kept the pagan Asherah poles (groves) in Samaria and continued their sinful traditions.

  • Urdu Explanation:

2 Kings 13:7

Verse: Neither did he leave of the people to Jehoahaz but fifty horsemen and ten chariots and ten thousand footmen for the king of Syria had destroyed them and had made them like the dust by threshing.

  • English Explanation: The Syrian oppression had been so severe that Israel’s military was reduced to a tiny remnant. Their army was virtually pulverized into “dust.”

  • Urdu Explanation:

2 Kings 13:8-9

Verse: Now the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz… And Jehoahaz slept with his fathers and they buried him in Samaria and Joash his son reigned in his stead.

  • English Explanation: Jehoahaz died and was buried in the capital, Samaria. His son Joash (different from the Joash of Judah) succeeded him.

  • Urdu Explanation:

2 Kings 13:10-13

Verses Summary: These verses record the 16-year reign of Joash of Israel. Like his father, he did evil and followed Jeroboam’s sins. It also notes his military conflict with Amaziah of Judah.

  • English Explanation: Joash of Israel maintained the status quo of rebellion against God. After his reign, his son Jeroboam II took the throne.

  • Urdu Explanation:

2 Kings 13:14

Verse: Now Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness whereof he died And Joash the king of Israel came down unto him and wept over his face and said O my father my father the chariot of Israel and the horsemen thereof.

  • English Explanation: As the great prophet Elisha lay dying, King Joash visited him. The King’s cry acknowledged that Elisha was a greater defense for Israel than any physical army.

  • Urdu Explanation:

2 Kings 13:15-17

Verse Summary: Elisha instructs Joash to shoot an arrow eastward toward Syria, declaring it “The arrow of the LORD’s deliverance.”

  • English Explanation: Elisha used a symbolic act to show that God would grant victory over Syria at Aphek. The prophet’s hands on the king’s hands symbolized God’s power working through the king.

  • Urdu Explanation:

2 Kings 13:18-19

Verse Summary: Elisha tells Joash to smite the ground. Joash strikes only three times, which angers Elisha because it meant only limited victories.

  • English Explanation: The King lacked zeal and faith. Had he struck the ground more times, Syria would have been totally destroyed. Because he stopped at three, his victories would be limited to three.

  • Urdu Explanation:

2 Kings 13:20-21

Verse Summary: Elisha dies. Later, a dead man is thrown into Elisha’s tomb and comes back to life upon touching Elisha’s bones.

  • English Explanation: Even in death, God worked a miracle through Elisha to show that His life-giving power remained with His word and His prophets.

  • Urdu Explanation:

2 Kings 13:22-23

Verse: But Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz And the LORD was gracious unto them and had compassion on them… because of his covenant with Abraham Isaac and Jacob…

  • English Explanation: Despite the constant oppression and Israel’s failure, God spared them from total destruction. This was not because they deserved it, but because of His ancient promise to the Patriarchs.

  • Urdu Explanation:
