2 Kings 17:5

Verse: Then the king of Assyria came up throughout all the land and went up to Samaria and besieged it three years.

  • English Explanation: Shalmaneser V, the Assyrian king, launched a full-scale invasion. The siege of Samaria was long and grueling, lasting three years, demonstrating the city’s strong defenses but also the relentless pressure of the Assyrian military.

2 Kings 17:6

Verse: In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria and carried Israel away into Assyria and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan and in the cities of the Medes.

  • English Explanation: In 722 BC, Samaria fell. The Assyrians followed their policy of mass deportation to prevent future revolts, scattering the Israelites across various regions like Halah and Medes.

Verse: For so it was that the children of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God which had brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt and had feared other gods.

2 Kings 17:8

Verse: And walked in the statutes of the heathen whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel and of the kings of Israel which they had made.

  • English Explanation: Instead of following God’s law, Israel adopted the pagan customs of the Canaanites whom God had previously driven out. They also followed the corrupt religious innovations of their own kings.

Verse: And the children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right against the LORD their God and they built them high places in all their cities from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.

  • English Explanation: Disobedience wasn’t just public; it was systemic. They practiced forbidden rituals in secret and built “high places” (altars) everywhere, from rural outposts to major cities.

  • Urdu Explanation: بنی اسرائیل نے چھپ کر بھی ایسے کام کیے جو درست نہیں تھے۔ انہوں نے ہر چھوٹے بڑے شہر میں اونچے مقام بنا کر وہاں جھوٹے خداؤں کی عبادت کی۔

Verse: And they set them up images and groves in every high hill and under every green tree.

  • English Explanation: The land was littered with idols and Asherah poles (groves). They used natural landmarks as sites for pagan worship, completely saturating the land with idolatry.

  • Urdu Explanation: انہوں نے ہر اونچی پہاڑی اور ہر ہرے درخت کے نیچے بت اور آشرہ کے ستون نصب کر لیے تھے۔

Verse: And there they burnt incense in all the high places as did the heathen whom the LORD carried away before them and wrought wicked things to provoke the LORD to anger.

  • English Explanation: By burning incense like the pagans, Israel intentionally provoked God. They repeated the very sins that led to the destruction of the nations before them.

Verse: For they served idols whereof the LORD had said unto them Ye shall not do this thing.

  • English Explanation: This highlights direct rebellion. God had specifically commanded “Thou shalt have no other gods,” yet they chose to serve idols.

  • Urdu Explanation: انہوں نے ان بتوں کی پوجا کی جن کے بارے میں خدا نے صاف حکم دیا تھا کہ ایسا ہرگز نہ کرنا۔

2 Kings 17:13

Verse: Yet the LORD testified against Israel and against Judah by all the prophets and by all the seers saying Turn ye from your evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes according to all the law which I commanded your fathers and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets.

  • English Explanation: God was patient. He sent numerous prophets (like Elijah and Elisha) to warn them and call them back to the Mosaic Law, but His warnings were ignored.

Verse: Notwithstanding they would not hear but hardened their necks like to the neck of their fathers that did not believe in the LORD their God.

  • English Explanation: They were stubborn and “stiff-necked,” refusing to submit to divine authority. Their lack of obedience was rooted in a fundamental lack of faith.

  • Urdu Explanation: لیکن انہوں نے ایک نہ سنی اور اپنے باپ دادا کی طرح ضد پر اڑے رہے جنہوں نے اپنے خدا پر یقین نہیں کیا تھا۔

Verse: And they rejected his statutes and his covenant that he made with their fathers and his testimonies which he testified against them and they followed vanity and became vain and went after the heathen that were round about them concerning whom the LORD had charged them that they should not do like them.

  • English Explanation: By following “vanity” (worthless idols), the people themselves became worthless. They broke the sacred covenant made at Sinai to mimic the surrounding nations.

  • Urdu Explanation: انہوں نے خدا کے عہد اور قوانین کو رد کر دیا اور لغو یعنی فضول بتوں کے پیچھے لگ گئے جس کی وجہ سے وہ خود بھی بے مقصد اور فضول ہو گئے۔

Verse: And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God and made them molten images even two calves and made a grove and worshipped all the host of heaven and served Baal.

  • English Explanation: This verse lists specific sins: the golden calves of Jeroboam, Asherah poles, astrology (host of heaven), and the worship of the Phoenician god Baal.

  • Urdu Explanation: انہوں نے خدا کے تمام احکامات ترک کر دیے اور بچھڑوں کے دو مورتیں بنائیں آشرہ کا ستون بنایا اور ستاروں اور بعل دیوتا کی پوجا کرنے لگے۔

2 Kings 17:17

Verse: And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire and used divination and enchantments and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD to provoke him to anger.

  • English Explanation: This marks the lowest point of their depravity: child sacrifice to Molech and practicing witchcraft. They “sold themselves” to sin, becoming slaves to evil.

Verse: Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight there was none left but the tribe of Judah only.

Verse: Also Judah kept not the commandments of the LORD their God but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made.

  • English Explanation: A cautionary note: Judah was not innocent. They began to imitate the sinful patterns of the northern kingdom, hinting at their own future exile.

  • Urdu Explanation: یہوداہ نے بھی خدا کے احکامات کی پرواہ نہ کی بلکہ اسرائیل کی بنائی ہوئی بری رسموں پر چلنے لگے۔

2 Kings 17:20

Verse: And the LORD rejected all the seed of Israel and afflicted them and delivered them into the hand of spoilers until he had cast them out of his sight.

  • English Explanation: God rejected the entire nation as a political entity, handing them over to oppressors (Assyrians) until the land was cleared of them.

  • Urdu Explanation: خدا نے اسرائیل کی پوری نسل کو رد کر دیا انہیں دکھ دیا اور لٹیروں کے حوالے کر دیا یہاں تک کہ انہیں اپنی نظروں سے اوجھل کر دیا۔

2 Kings 17:21

Verse: For he rent Israel from the house of David and they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king and Jeroboam drave Israel from following the LORD and made them sin a great sin.

  • English Explanation: This refers back to the split of the kingdom. Jeroboam I led Israel into the “great sin” of golden calf worship to keep them from going to Jerusalem.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب خدا نے اسرائیل کو داؤد کے گھرانے سے الگ کیا تو انہوں نے یربعام کو بادشاہ بنایا جس نے اسرائیل کو خدا کی پیروی سے روک کر بڑے گناہ میں ڈال دیا۔

2 Kings 17:22

Verse: For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did they departed not from them.

  • English Explanation: For over 200 years, every king of Israel continued the state-sponsored idolatry established by Jeroboam. They refused to reform.

  • Urdu Explanation: بنی اسرائیل ان تمام گناہوں پر چلتے رہے جو یربعام نے شروع کیے تھے اور کبھی ان سے توبہ نہ کی۔

2 Kings 17:23

Verse: Until the LORD removed Israel out of his sight as he had said by all his servants the prophets. So was Israel carried away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day.

  • English Explanation: The exile was the fulfillment of prophetic warnings. The Ten Northern Tribes were lost to history as a distinct nation, remaining in Assyrian lands.

  • Urdu Explanation: یہاں تک کہ خدا نے اپنے نبیوں کی پیشگوئی کے مطابق اسرائیل کو نکال دیا۔ پس اسرائیلی اپنے ملک سے جلاوطن ہو کر اسور چلے گئے جہاں وہ آج کے دن تک ہیں۔

2 Kings 17:24

Verse: And the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon and from Cuthah and from Ava and from Hamath and from Sepharvaim and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel and they possessed Samaria and dwelt in the cities thereof.

  • English Explanation: To prevent the land from remaining empty, the Assyrians brought foreigners from various conquered regions to settle in Samaria. This mixed population became the Samaritans.

  • Urdu Explanation: اسور کے بادشاہ نے بابل اور دیگر علاقوں سے لوگوں کو لا کر سامریہ کے شہروں میں بسا دیا اور انہوں نے اسرائیل کی جگہ لے لی۔

2 Kings 17:25

Verse: And so it was at the beginning of their dwelling there that they feared not the LORD therefore the LORD sent lions among them which slew some of them.

  • English Explanation: These new settlers did not honor the God of Israel. As a sign of His sovereignty over the land, God sent lions as a judgment against them.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب وہ وہاں نئے نئے آباد ہوئے تو وہ خدا سے نہیں ڈرتے تھے اس لیے خدا نے ان کے درمیان شیر بھیجے جنہوں نے ان میں سے بعض کو مار ڈالا۔

2 Kings 17:26

Verse: Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria saying The nations which thou hast removed and placed in the cities of Samaria know not the manner of the God of the land therefore he hath sent lions among them and behold they slay them because they know not the manner of the God of the land.

  • English Explanation: The settlers recognized the lions were a divine punishment. They petitioned the king for someone to teach them how to appease the “God of the land,” viewing Him as a local deity.

  • Urdu Explanation: انہوں نے اسور کے بادشاہ سے شکایت کی کہ جو قومیں یہاں بسائی گئی ہیں وہ اس زمین کے خدا کے طریقے نہیں جانتیں اس لیے شیر انہیں مار رہے ہیں۔
