1 Chronicles Chapter 19 (Verses 13–19)

Verse 13

Verse: Be of good courage and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people and for the cities of our God and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.

  • English Explanation: Joab encourages the army to fight with bravery and purpose, reminding them they are fighting for God’s inheritance, while ultimately submitting the outcome to God’s sovereign will.

Verse 14

Verse: So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle and they fled before him.

  • English Explanation: As soon as Joab’s forces approached, the Syrian mercenaries lost heart and retreated, showing that spiritual courage often leads to physical victory.

  • Urdu Explanation: جیسے ہی یوآب اور اس کے لوگ لڑائی کے لیے آگے بڑھے تو شامی فوج ان کے سامنے سے بھاگ نکلی۔

Verse 15

Verse: And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled they likewise fled before Abishai his brother and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.

  • English Explanation: Seeing their paid allies flee, the Ammonites retreated into their fortified city. Joab, having secured the field, returned to the capital.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب بنی عمون نے دیکھا کہ شامی بھاگ گئے ہیں تو وہ بھی ابیشے کے سامنے سے بھاگ کر شہر میں پناہ گزین ہو گئے اور یوآب یروشلم واپس آگیا۔

Verse 16

Verse: And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel they sent messengers and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.

Verse 17

Verse: And it was told David and he gathered all Israel and passed over Jordan and came upon them and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians they fought with him.

Verse 18

Verse: But the Syrians fled before Israel and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots and forty thousand footmen and killed Shophach the captain of the host.

Verse 19

Verse: And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel they made peace with David and became his servants neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.

1 Chronicles Chapter 20 (Verses 1–8)

Verse 1

Verse: And it came to pass that after the year was expired at the time that kings go out to battle Joab led forth the power of the army and wasted the country of the children of Ammon and came and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried at Jerusalem. And Joab smote Rabbah and destroyed it.

  • English Explanation: In the spring, when military campaigns typically began, Joab conquered the Ammonite capital while David remained in Jerusalem.

Verse 2

Verse: And David took the crown of their king from off his head and found it to weigh a talent of gold and there were precious stones in it and it was set upon David’s head and he brought also exceeding much spoil out of the city.

Verse 3

Verse: And he brought out the people that were in it and cut them with saws and with harrows of iron and with axes. Even so dealt David with all the cities of the children of Ammon. And David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

Verse 4

Verse: And it came to pass after this that there arose war at Gezer with the Philistines at which time Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Sippai that was of the children of the giant and they were subdued.

Verse 5

Verse: And there was war again with the Philistines and Elhanan the son of Jair slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite whose spear staff was like a weaver’s beam.

Verse 6

Verse: And yet again there was war at Gath where was a man of great stature whose fingers and toes were four and twenty six on each hand and six on each foot and he also was the son of the giant.

Verse 7

Verse: But when he defied Israel Jonathan the son of Shimea David’s brother slew him.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب اس نے اسرائیل کو للکارا تو داؤد کے بھتیجے یونتن نے اسے قتل کر دیا۔

Verse 8

Verse: These were born unto the giant in Gath and they fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.

  • Urdu Explanation: یہ سب جات کے دیو زاد تھے جو داؤد اور اس کے خادموں کے ہاتھوں مارے گئے۔

1 Chronicles Chapter 21 (Verses 1–3)

Verse 1

Verse: And Satan stood up against Israel and provoked David to number Israel.

  • English Explanation: A pivotal spiritual moment where Satan incites David to conduct a census, appealing to pride and self-reliance rather than trust in God.

  • Urdu Explanation: شیطان اسرائیل کے خلاف کھڑا ہوا اور داؤد کو اکسايا کہ وہ اسرائیل کی مردم شماری کرے۔

Verse 2

Verse: And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people Go number Israel from Beer-sheba even to Dan and bring the number of them to me that I may know it.

  • English Explanation: David orders a nationwide census to quantify his military strength, ignoring the spiritual implications of his reliance on numbers.

  • Urdu Explanation: داؤد نے یوآب کو حکم دیا کہ بیرسبع سے دان تک اسرائیل کی گنتی کرو تاکہ مجھے ان کی تعداد معلوم ہو سکے۔

Verse 3

Verse: And Joab answered The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be but my lord the king are they not all my lord’s servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?

  • English Explanation: Joab, usually the man of war, acts as the voice of reason, warning David that this census is a sin of pride that will bring guilt upon the nation.
