Verse 4

Verse: Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab Wherefore Joab departed and went throughout all Israel and came to Jerusalem

  • English Explanation: Despite Joab’s hesitation and warnings that the census was a spiritual trap, David’s royal authority overrode him. Joab obeyed the command under protest, traveling the land to count the people.

Verse 5

Verse: And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword

  • English Explanation: The census revealed a massive military force: 1.1 million men in Israel and 470,000 in Judah. This highlights David’s reliance on human strength (military might) rather than God’s protection.

Verse 6

Verse: But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them for the king’s word was abominable to Joab

  • English Explanation: Joab was so disgusted by David’s prideful command that he intentionally left the tribes of Levi and Benjamin out of the count, hoping to mitigate the sin.

  • Urdu Explanation: یوآب کو بادشاہ کا یہ حکم اتنا ناپسند تھا کہ اس نے لاوی اور بنیمین کے قبیلوں کو شمار ہی نہیں کیا تاکہ گناہ کی شدت کو کسی حد تک کم کیا جا سکے۔

Verse 7

Verse: And God was displeased with this thing therefore he smote Israel

  • English Explanation: The census was an act of pride and a lack of faith. Because David sought security in numbers rather than in the Lord, God brought judgment upon the nation.

  • Urdu Explanation: خدا اس کام سے ناراض ہوا کیونکہ یہ تکبر اور بے ایمانی کی علامت تھا۔ چونکہ داؤد نے خدا کے بجائے تعداد پر بھروسہ کیا تھا اس لیے خدا نے اسرائیل پر عذاب نازل کیا۔

Verse 8

Verse: And David said unto God I have sinned greatly because I have done this thing but now I beseech thee do away the iniquity of thy servant for I have done very foolishly

  • English Explanation: David’s conscience finally strikes him. He confesses his “great sin” and acknowledges his foolishness, asking for God’s forgiveness.

  • Urdu Explanation: داؤد کا ضمیر جاگ اٹھا اور اس نے خدا کے سامنے اعتراف کیا کہ اس نے بڑی حماقت اور گناہ کیا ہے۔ اس نے التجا کی کہ خدا اس کے گناہ کو معاف کر دے۔

Verse 9 & 10

Verse: And the LORD spake unto Gad David’s seer saying Go and tell David saying Thus saith the LORD I offer thee three things choose thee one of them that I may do it unto thee

  • English Explanation: God communicates through the prophet Gad. Instead of immediate forgiveness without consequence, God gives David a choice of three punishments, emphasizing that sin has physical repercussions.

  • Urdu Explanation: خدا نے جاد نبی کے ذریعے داؤد سے کلام کیا۔ خدا نے داؤد کو توبہ کے ساتھ ساتھ تین سزاؤں میں سے ایک کا انتخاب کرنے کا اختیار دیا تاکہ گناہ کے نتائج کا سامنا کیا جا سکے۔

Verse 11 & 12

Verse: So Gad came to David and said unto him Thus saith the LORD Choose thee Either three years’ famine or three months to be destroyed before thy foes while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee or else three days the sword of the LORD even the pestilence in the land and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me

  • English Explanation: The options were: 3 years of famine, 3 months of military defeat, or 3 days of a divine plague. David had to choose between falling into the hands of nature, men, or God.

  • Urdu Explanation: داؤد کو تین اختیارات دیے گئے: تین سال کا کال تین ماہ تک دشمنوں سے شکست یا تین دن تک خدا کی تلوار یعنی ملک میں وبا کا پھیلنا۔ اب داؤد کو فیصلہ کرنا تھا کہ وہ کس صورت میں سزا پائے گا۔

Verse 13

Verse: And David said unto Gad I am in a great strait let me fall now into the hand of the LORD for very great are his mercies but let me not fall into the hand of man

  • English Explanation: David chooses the plague. His reasoning is profound: he trusts God’s mercy more than the mercy of human enemies. Even in judgment, he knows God is compassionate.

  • Urdu Explanation: داؤد نے وبا کا انتخاب کیا اور کہا کہ وہ انسانوں کے ہاتھوں میں گرنے کے بجائے خدا کے ہاتھ میں گرنا پسند کرے گا کیونکہ خدا کی رحمت بہت بڑی ہے۔

Verse 14

Verse: So the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men

  • English Explanation: The judgment begins. A severe plague strikes the nation, leading to the death of 70,000 Israelites, showing the heavy cost of the leader’s spiritual lapse.

  • Urdu Explanation: چنانچہ ملک میں وبا پھیل گئی اور اسرائیل کے ستر ہزار مرد ہلاک ہو گئے۔ یہ ایک لیڈر کی روحانی غلطی کی بھاری قیمت تھی۔

Verse 15

Verse: And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it and as he was destroying the LORD beheld and he repented him of the evil and said to the angel that destroyed It is enough stay now thine hand And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite

  • English Explanation: As the destroying angel approached Jerusalem, God’s heart was moved to mercy. He commanded the angel to stop at the threshing floor of Ornan, sparing the city.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب فرشتہ یروشلم کو تباہ کرنے کے لیے بڑھا تو خدا کو رحم آگیا۔ خدا نے فرشتے کو رکنے کا حکم دیا اور وہ فرشتہ ارنان یبوسی کے کھلیان کے پاس رک گیا۔

Verse 16

Verse: And David lifted up his eyes and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem Then David and the elders of Israel who were clothed in sackcloth fell upon their faces

  • English Explanation: David sees the terrifying vision of the angel with a sword over the city. In humility and mourning (wearing sackcloth), the leadership of Israel prostrates before God.

  • Urdu Explanation: داؤد نے فرشتے کو زمین اور آسمان کے درمیان ننگی تلوار لیے دیکھا۔ یہ دیکھ کر داؤد اور بزرگوں نے ٹاٹ اوڑھ لیا اور خدا کے سامنے سجدہ ریز ہو گئے۔

Verse 17

Verse: And David said unto God Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed but as for these sheep what have they done let thine hand I pray thee O LORD my God be on me and on my father’s house but not on thy people that they should be plagued

  • English Explanation: David displays true leadership by taking full responsibility. He pleads with God to punish him and his family instead of the innocent people (“these sheep”).

  • Urdu Explanation: داؤد نے حقیقی قیادت کا ثبوت دیتے ہوئے تمام ذمہ داری اپنے سر لی۔ اس نے خدا سے التجا کی کہ ان بے گناہ لوگوں (بھیڑوں) کو چھوڑ دیا جائے اور سزا صرف اسے اور اس کے خاندان کو دی جائے۔

Verse 18 & 19

Verse: Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David that David should go up and set up an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite And David went up at the saying of Gad which he spake in the name of the LORD

  • English Explanation: Through Gad, the angel instructs David to build an altar at the exact spot where the plague stopped. This signifies the transition from judgment to worship.

  • Urdu Explanation: فرشتے نے جاد کے ذریعے داؤد کو حکم دیا کہ وہ ارنان کے کھلیان میں خدا کے لیے ایک قربان گاہ بنائے۔ داؤد نے فوراً اس حکم کی تعمیل کی۔

Verse 20 & 21

Verse: And Ornan turned back and saw the angel and his four sons with him hid themselves Now Ornan was threshing wheat And as David came to Ornan Ornan looked and saw David and went out of the threshingfloor and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground

  • English Explanation: Ornan, a commoner, is terrified by the sight of the angel. When he sees King David approaching, he leaves his work to show royal respect.

  • Urdu Explanation: ارنان نے بھی فرشتے کو دیکھا اور خوفزدہ ہو کر چھپ گیا۔ جب اس نے بادشاہ داؤد کو آتے دیکھا تو وہ اپنے کام سے نکلا اور بادشاہ کو سجدہ کیا۔

Verse 22

Verse: Then David said to Ornan Grant me the place of this threshingfloor that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD thou shalt grant it me for the full price that the plague may be stayed from the people

  • English Explanation: David asks to buy the land to offer sacrifices. He insists on paying the “full price,” understanding that a sacrifice to God must cost something to the giver.

  • Urdu Explanation: داؤد نے ارنان سے وہ جگہ خریدنے کی درخواست کی تاکہ وہاں قربان گاہ بنا سکے۔ اس نے پوری قیمت ادا کرنے پر اصرار کیا کیونکہ وہ جانتا تھا کہ خدا کے لیے قربانی میں ذاتی ایثار شامل ہونا چاہیے۔

Verse 23

Verse: And Ornan said unto David Take it to thee and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes lo I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings and the threshing instruments for wood and the wheat for the meat offering I give it all

  • English Explanation: Ornan generously offers the land, the oxen, and the wooden tools for free. This shows his own devotion and desire to see the plague ended.

  • Urdu Explanation: ارنان نے بڑی فراخدلی سے وہ زمین بیل اور لکڑیاں مفت دینے کی پیشکش کی۔ اس نے سب کچھ بادشاہ کے حوالے کرنا چاہا تاکہ خدا کی خوشنودی حاصل کی جا سکے۔
