2 Chronicles Chapter

Verse-by-Verse Commentary & Explanation

2 Chronicles 25:17

Verse: Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice and sent to Joash the son of Jehoahaz the son of Jehu king of Israel saying Come let us see one another in the face

English Explanation

Following a military victory over Edom, King Amaziah of Judah became overconfident. Instead of seeking God’s counsel, he consulted with secular advisors and foolishly decided to challenge King Joash of the northern kingdom of Israel to a confrontation. The phrase “let us see one another in the face” was a diplomatic but direct invitation to battle—a challenge born out of sheer arrogance.

2 Chronicles 25:18

Verse: And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah saying The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon saying Give thy daughter to my son to wife and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon and trode down the thistle

English Explanation

King Joash of Israel responded with a insulting fable to put Amaziah in his place. He compared Amaziah (Judah) to a weak, lowly thistle and himself (Israel) to a grand, strong cedar tree. Joash mocked Amaziah’s presumption of equality, adding that a mere wild beast could easily trample the thistle, warning Amaziah that he was drastically out of his league.

2 Chronicles 25:19

Verse: Thou sayest Lo thou hast smitten the Edomites and thine heart lifteth thee up to boast abide now at home why shouldest thou meddle to thine hurt that thou shouldest fall even thou and Judah with thee

English Explanation

Joash spoke directly, exposing Amaziah’s pride. He acknowledged that Amaziah had defeated Edom, but warned him that this minor victory had made him dangerously arrogant. Joash advised him to stay at home and enjoy his glory rather than provoking a conflict that would inevitably ruin both him and the entire kingdom of Judah.

2 Chronicles 25:20

Verse: But Amaziah would not hear for it came of God that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies because they sought after the gods of Edom

English Explanation

Amaziah stubbornly refused to listen to Joash’s warning. The writer of Chronicles explains the spiritual reality behind this stubbornness: it was God’s judgment. Because Amaziah had turned away from the True God and worshiped the idols of the defeated Edomites, God allowed his judgment to blind Amaziah’s judgment, setting him up for defeat.

2 Chronicles 25:21

Verse: So Joash the king of Israel went up and they saw one another in the face both he and Amaziah king of Judah at Beth-shemesh which belongeth to Judah

English Explanation

Since Amaziah refused to back down, King Joash mobilized his army and marched south into Judah’s territory. The two armies met face-to-face in battle at Beth-shemesh. Because Amaziah provoked the fight, the battlefield was brought right onto Judah’s home soil, endangering his own people.

2 Chronicles 25:22

Verse: And Judah was put to the worse before Israel and they fled every man to his tent

English Explanation

The battle was a complete disaster for Judah. The northern kingdom of Israel decisively defeated Amaziah’s army. The military formation collapsed entirely, and the soldiers of Judah fled for their lives, retreating back to their homes in humiliation.

2 Chronicles 25:23

Verse: And Joash the king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah the son of Joash the son of Jehoahaz at Beth-shemesh and brought him to Jerusalem and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate four hundred cubits

English Explanation

King Joash captured Amaziah at Beth-shemesh and marched him in disgrace to his own capital city, Jerusalem. To humiliate Judah and leave them defenseless, Joash tore down a massive section of Jerusalem’s protective wall—four hundred cubits (about 600 feet)—stretching from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate.

2 Chronicles 25:24

Verse: And he took all the gold and the silver and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obed-edom and the treasures of the king’s house the hostages also and returned to Samaria

English Explanation

Joash plundered Jerusalem before returning north to Samaria. He stripped the Temple of God of its gold, silver, and sacred vessels, which were under the care of the family of Obed-edom. He also looted the royal palace treasury and took hostages to ensure Judah’s future submission.

2 Chronicles 25:25

Verse: And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years

English Explanation

Amaziah survived his disastrous military defeat and political humiliation. He outlived his rival, King Joash of Israel, by fifteen years, but his remaining years as a broken, compromised king were devoid of glory or spiritual revival.

2 Chronicles 25:26

Verse: Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah first and last behold are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel

English Explanation

The biblical writer concludes the main narrative of Amaziah’s life by pointing readers to the official court records, “the book of the kings of Judah and Israel,” where the comprehensive history of his entire reign—from his promising start to his tragic end—was detailed.

2 Chronicles 25:27

Verse: Now after the time that Amaziah did turn away from following the LORD they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem and he fled to Lachish but they sent to Lachish after him and slew him there

English Explanation

Amaziah’s spiritual apostasy eventually led to his political undoing. After he abandoned the Lord, his people lost all respect for his leadership, culminating in a rebellion within Jerusalem. Amaziah fled to the fortress city of Lachish for safety, but the conspirators pursued him and assassinated him there.

2 Chronicles 25:28

Verse: And they brought him upon horses and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah

English Explanation

Despite his tragic end and assassination, Amaziah was treated with a degree of royal dignity in death. His body was brought back to Jerusalem on horses and buried in the royal tombs alongside his ancestors in the City of David (referred to here as the city of Judah).

Chapter 26

2 Chronicles 26:1

Verse: Then all the people of Judah took Uzziah who was sixteen years old and made him king in the room of his father Amaziah

English Explanation

Following the assassination of Amaziah, the citizens of Judah united to place his sixteen-year-old son, Uzziah (also known as Azariah), on the throne. Despite his young age, the people selected him as the legitimate successor to restore stability after a period of political turmoil.

2 Chronicles 26:2

Verse: He built Eloth and restored it to Judah after that the king slept with his fathers

English Explanation

One of Uzziah’s earliest and most significant achievements after his father’s death was reclaiming and rebuilding Eloth (Elath). This was a highly strategic port city on the Red Sea, and restoring it to Judah greatly boosted the nation’s commercial wealth and trade power.

2 Chronicles 26:3

Verse: Sixteen years old was Uzziah when he began to reign and he reigned fifty and two years in Jerusalem His mother’s name also was Jecoliah of Jerusalem

English Explanation

This verse provides the formal chronological record of Uzziah’s reign. He came to power at age sixteen and reigned for an exceptionally long period of fifty-two years in Jerusalem. The text also honors his mother, Jecoliah, highlighting her origin from Jerusalem.

2 Chronicles 26:4

Verse: And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD according to all that his father Amaziah did

English Explanation

Uzziah began his spiritual walk on a positive note, doing what was pleasing to the Lord. His early life mirrored the initial years of his father Amaziah, who had also started his reign with obedience to God before falling into pride later in life.

2 Chronicles 26:5

Verse: And he sought God in the days of Zechariah who had understanding in the visions of God and as long as he sought the LORD God made him to prosper

English Explanation

Uzziah’s success was tied directly to his spiritual devotion. He walked under the spiritual guidance of Zechariah, a godly mentor gifted with prophetic understanding. The verse lays down a timeless spiritual principle: as long as Uzziah faithfully sought the Lord, God granted him immense prosperity and success.

2 Chronicles 26:6

Verse: And he went forth and warred against the Philistines and brake down the wall of Gath and the wall of Jabneh and the wall of Ashdod and built cities about Ashdod and among the Philistines

English Explanation

Empowered by God, Uzziah launched highly successful military campaigns against Judah’s long-standing enemies, the Philistines. He dismantled the fortifications of their major cities—Gath, Jabneh, and Ashdod—and built Judaean settlements within Philistine territory to secure total administrative control.

2 Chronicles 26:7

Verse: And God helped him against the Philistines and against the Arabians that dwelt in Gur-baal and the Mehunims

English Explanation

The writer attributes Uzziah’s military triumphs entirely to divine intervention. It was God who directly helped him defeat the Philistines, the nomadic Arab tribes living in Gur-baal, and the Meunites. God’s favor secured all borders around Judah.

2 Chronicles 26:8

Verse: And the Ammonites gave gifts to Uzziah and his name spread abroad even to the entering in of Egypt for he strengthened himself exceedingly

English Explanation

As a sign of total submission and desire for peace, the Ammonites paid tribute (gifts) to Uzziah. His reputation as a powerful military and political leader spread across the Ancient Near East all the way to the border of Egypt, reflecting how exceedingly strong he had become under God’s blessing.

2 Chronicles 26:9

Verse: Moreover Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the corner gate and at the valley gate and at the turning of the wall and fortified them

English Explanation

To undo the structural damage done during his father’s reign when Joash broke down Jerusalem’s defenses, Uzziah heavily fortified the capital city. He constructed strategic defensive towers at key locations: the Corner Gate, the Valley Gate, and the angle of the wall.

2 Chronicles 26:10

Verse: Also he built towers in the desert and digged many wells for he had much cattle both in the low country and in the plains husbandmen also and vine dressers in the mountains and in Carmel for he loved husbandry

English Explanation

Uzziah was a visionary leader who excelled in domestic policy and economy. He protected his kingdom’s agricultural wealth by building security towers in the wilderness and digging numerous wells to support his massive livestock herds. He also deeply loved agriculture, actively promoting farming and winemaking across the mountains and fertile fields of Carmel.

2 Chronicles 26:11

Verse: Moreover Uzziah had an host of fighting men that went out to war by bands according to the number of their account by the hand of Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the ruler under the hand of Hananiah one of the king’s captains

English Explanation

Uzziah established a highly organized, professional standing army. Rather than a chaotic militia, his troops were organized into structured, ready-for-battle regiments. This system was meticulously managed and numbered by administrative officials, specifically Jeiel the scribe, Maaseiah the officer, and Hananiah, one of the top royal commanders.

2 Chronicles 26:12

Verse: The whole number of the chief of the fathers of the mighty men of valour were two thousand and six hundred

English Explanation

This verse highlights the elite leadership core of Uzziah’s armed forces. There were 2,600 clan leaders, described as “mighty men of valor.” These seasoned, courageous officers provided the tactical expertise and leadership required to command Uzziah’s massive and prosperous army effectively.
