Ezra Chapter

Verse-by-Verse Commentary

Ezra 4:13

Verse: Be it known now unto the king that if this city be builded and the walls set up again then will they not pay toll tribute and custom and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.

  • Detailed Explanation (English): The adversaries of the Jews (the Samaritans) send a strategic letter to King Artaxerxes. They appeal directly to the empire’s financial vulnerabilities, claiming that if Jerusalem is allowed to rebuild its defensive walls, the citizens will naturally rebel and withhold taxes (toll, tribute, and custom). This is a classic political manipulation designed to frame a religious/national restoration as a direct fiscal threat to the Persian treasury.

Ezra 4:14

Verse: Now because we have maintenance from the king’s palace and it was not meet for us to see the king’s dishonour therefore have we sent and certified the king

  • Detailed Explanation (English): The writers of the letter flatter the king by emphasizing their loyalty. The phrase “maintenance from the king’s palace” (literally, “eating the salt of the palace”) implies they are on the royal payroll or enjoy high-status imperial benefits. They position themselves as selfless, loyal servants who cannot bear to see the king’s reputation or treasury damaged by Jewish independence.

Ezra 4:15

Verse: That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers so shalt thou find in the book of the records and know that this city is a rebellious city and hurtful unto kings and provinces and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time for which cause was this city destroyed.

  • Detailed Explanation (English): The enemies encourage the king to look at past state archives. They point to Jerusalem’s long history of resisting foreign conquerors (such as the rebellions against Babylon under Jehoiakim and Zedekiah). They accurately state that the city was historically destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar precisely because of these insurrections, weaponizing true historical facts out of context to stop a holy work.

Ezra 4:16

Verse: We certify the king that if this city be builded again and the walls thereof set up by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.

  • Detailed Explanation (English): This verse represents the peak of the accusers’ fear-mongering. They state that if Jerusalem’s walls are completed, the Persian Empire will lose complete administrative control over the entire region “beyond the river” (the Trans-Euphrates region, which included Judea, Samaria, and Syria). It is an extreme exaggeration to trigger immediate military and political intervention.

Ezra 4:17

Verse: Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor and to Shimshai the scribe and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria and unto the rest beyond the river Peace and at such a time.

  • Detailed Explanation (English): King Artaxerxes responds officially to the administrative leaders in Samaria—Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe. The Persian court system takes the threat seriously. The standard regional greeting of “Peace” is issued before addressing the core political issue.

Ezra 4:18

Verse: The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.

  • Detailed Explanation (English): The king acknowledges receipt of the complaint, noting that it has been translated and read aloud clearly in his presence. This shows that the administrative systems of the Persian empire were highly organized and took provincial intelligence reports seriously.

Ezra 4:19

Verse: And I commanded and search hath been made and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.

  • Detailed Explanation (English): The king’s research team confirms the historical allegations. Records showed that Jerusalem had indeed rebelled against previous superpowers like Assyria and Babylon. Because the archives focused on political behavior rather than religious callings, Jerusalem was verified as a high-risk security hazard.

Ezra 4:20

Verse: There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem which have ruled over all countries beyond the river and toll tribute and custom was paid unto them.

  • Detailed Explanation (English): The archives also revealed the golden eras of King David and King Solomon, who ruled vast territories and extracted heavy taxes from neighboring regions west of the Euphrates. This historical power confirmed Artaxerxes’ fears that a restored Jerusalem could once again threaten imperial dominance.

Ezra 4:21

Verse: Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease and that this city be not builded until another commandment shall be given from me.

  • Detailed Explanation (English): Artaxerxes issues a formal injunction. He orders an immediate halt to the construction of the city. However, he leaves a prophetic loophole by stating “until another commandment shall be given from me,” keeping the door slightly ajar for future Persian decrees (which would later manifest under King Darius and Artaxerxes himself).

Ezra 4:22

Verse: Take heed now that ye fail not to do this why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?

  • Detailed Explanation (English): The king commands his officials to act swiftly and without negligence. He wants to proactively mitigate any geopolitical or economic damages to the empire before the Jewish nation gains enough defensive strength to break free from Persian rule.

Ezra 4:23

Verse: Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum and Shimshai the scribe and their companions they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews and made them to cease by force and power.

  • Detailed Explanation (English): Armed with royal authority, the Samaritans rush to Jerusalem immediately. They do not merely display the letter; they use physical intimidation, military force, and political authority (“by force and power”) to shut down the rebuilding project. The work is brought to a violent, heartbreaking standstill.

Ezra 4:24

Verse: Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

  • Detailed Explanation (English): This verse marks a period of dark spiritual discouragement for Israel. The work on the Temple remains frozen for several years due to external political oppression and internal fear, lasting until the second year of King Darius Hystaspes’ reign (approx. 520 BC).

Ezra 5:1

Verse: Then the prophets Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel even unto them.

  • Detailed Explanation (English): After years of spiritual stagnation, God breaks the silence. He sends the prophets Haggai and Zechariah to challenge the complacency and fear of the people. Their message, delivered with divine authority (“in the name of the God of Israel”), reminds the people that God’s commandment supersedes human imperial decrees.

Ezra 5:2

Verse: Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem and with them were the prophets of God helping them.

  • Detailed Explanation (English): Stirred by the prophetic word, the civil leader Zerubbabel and the high priest Jeshua find renewed courage. They ignore the existing political bans and boldly restart construction on the Temple. Crucially, the prophets do not just preach; they stay on-site, offering spiritual and physical support to the builders.

Ezra 5:3

Verse: At the same time came to them Tatnai governor on this side the river and Shethar-boznai and their companions and said thus unto them Who hath commanded you to build this house and to make up this wall?

  • Detailed Explanation (English): The renewed construction catches the attention of Tatnai, the newly appointed Persian governor of the Trans-Euphrates province. Accompanied by Shethar-boznai, he visits the site. Unlike the malicious Samaritans in Chapter 4, Tatnai conducts a more objective, official bureaucratic investigation, demanding to know who authorized this massive project.

Ezra 5:4

Verse: Then said we unto them after this manner What are the names of the men that make this building?

  • Detailed Explanation (English): The imperial inspectors demand a list of the specific leaders and craftsmen responsible for the building project. This was a classic administrative tactic to establish legal and civil accountability, identifying who would be held liable if the project violated imperial Persian law.

Ezra 5:5

Verse: But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews that they could not cause them to cease till the matter came to Darius and then they returned answer by letter concerning this matter.

  • Detailed Explanation (English): Despite the intense scrutiny, divine providence protects the Jewish elders. God works behind the scenes so that Tatnai allows the construction to continue provisionally while a letter is sent to King Darius to verify the original historical decree of Cyrus the Great. The work is not forcibly halted this time.

Ezra 5:6

Verse: The copy of the letter that Tatnai governor on this side the river and Shethar-boznai and his companions the Apharsachites which were on this side the river sent unto Darius the king

  • Detailed Explanation (English): This verse serves as an official archival introduction to the actual administrative report drafted by Governor Tatnai, Shethar-boznai, and their associated officials (the Apharsachites) to be sent directly to the royal courts of King Darius.

Ezra 5:7

Verse: They sent a letter unto him wherein was written thus Unto Darius the king all peace.

  • Detailed Explanation (English): The official communication opens with standard Persian bureaucratic etiquette, extending formal wishes for absolute peace, prosperity, and welfare to King Darius before diving into provincial affairs.

Ezra 5:8

Verse: Be it known unto the king that we went into the province of Judea to the house of the great God which is builded with great stones and timber is laid in the walls and this work goeth fast on and prospereth in their hands.

  • Detailed Explanation (English): Tatnai reports his objective observations. He notes that the temple of the “great God” is being built with high-quality, heavy stones and robust timber. He explicitly informs the king that the construction is moving along rapidly and with great efficiency, highlighting the urgency of obtaining a royal legal ruling.

Ezra 5:9

Verse: Then asked we those elders and said unto them thus Who commanded you to build this house and to make up these walls?

  • Detailed Explanation (English): Tatnai recounts his direct conversation with the Jewish elders, reiterating his administrative question regarding the historical and legal authorization for restarting the temple and city walls.

Ezra 5:10

Verse: We asked their names also to certify thee that we might write the names of the men that were the chief of them.

  • Detailed Explanation (English): He informs the king that he took down the specific names of the community leaders and chief organizers, ensuring full administrative documentation so that the central government in Persia could check them against regional state files.

Ezra 5:11

Verse: And thus they returned us answer saying We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth and build the house that was builded these many years ago which a great king of Israel builded and set up.

  • Detailed Explanation (English): The elders offer a stunning, courageous defense. They do not first appeal to secular kings; they assert that they are servants of the supreme “God of heaven and earth.” They explain that they are restoring an ancient historical temple originally built by a great king (Solomon) centuries prior, placing their project in its true historical context.

Ezra 5:12

Verse: But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon the Chaldean who destroyed this house and carried the people away into Babylon.

  • Detailed Explanation (English): The elders take total theological responsibility for their past national downfall. They explain that the temple was not destroyed because Babylon’s gods were stronger, but because their ancestors provoked the God of heaven to wrath. This divine judgment resulted in King Nebuchadnezzar destroying the building and exiling the population, setting up the legal backstory for Cyrus’s later liberating decree.
