Ezra Chapter

Ezra Chapter 6

Ezra 6:18

Verse: And they set the priests in their divisions and the Levites in their courses for the service of God which is at Jerusalem as it is written in the book of Moses

  • English Explanation: Following the dedication of the rebuilt Temple, the community immediately organizes the religious leadership. They restore the priests and Levites into organized shifts and divisions according to the mandates given in the Law of Moses (specifically in Numbers and Deuteronomy). This underscores that the restoration is not just physical but structural and spiritual; they are aligning their practices strictly with Scripture.

Ezra 6:19

Verse: And the children of the captivity kept the passover upon the fourteenth day of the first month

  • English Explanation: The “children of the captivity” (the returning exiles) celebrate the Passover on its exact biblical date—the 14th day of Nisan. This festival marks their deliverance from Egypt, which serves as a beautiful parallel to their recent deliverance from the Babylonian captivity.

Ezra 6:20

Verse: For the priests and the Levites were purified together all of them were pure and killed the passover for all the children of the captivity and for their brethren the priests and for themselves

  • English Explanation: Ritual purity was essential for the Passover. This verse highlights a rare and beautiful moment of complete unity and dedication: every single priest and Levite sanctified themselves together. Because they were ritually clean, they were fit to slaughter the Passover lambs for the entire community, their fellow priests, and themselves.

Ezra 6:21

Verse: And the children of Israel which were come again out of captivity and all such as had separated themselves unto them from the filthiness of the heathen of the land to seek the LORD God of Israel did eat

  • English Explanation: The Passover meal was shared by two distinct groups: the returning exiles and the local inhabitants who had separated themselves from pagan practices. This shows that the identity of God’s covenant people was open to anyone willing to abandon idolatry (“the filthiness of the heathen”) and wholeheartedly seek the Lord.

Ezra 6:22

Verse: And kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with joy for the LORD had made them joyful and turned the heart of the king of Assyria unto them to strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God the God of Israel

  • English Explanation: The Passover is followed by the seven-day Feast of Unleavened Bread, celebrated with immense joy. The text credits God for their happiness and for influencing the Persian ruler (referred to historically/regionally here as the “king of Assyria”) to support and strengthen them in finishing the Temple.

Ezra Chapter 7

Ezra 7:1

Verse: Now after these things in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia Ezra the son of Seraiah the son of Azariah the son of Hilkiah

  • English Explanation: A time gap of several decades occurs between chapters 6 and 7. The narrative shifts to the reign of Artaxerxes I. Ezra introduces himself by tracing his genealogy through prominent high priests like Hilkiah (who found the Book of the Law during King Josiah’s reign), establishing his legitimate authority.

Ezra 7:2

Verse: The son of Shallum the son of Zadok the son of Ahitub

  • English Explanation: Ezra continues his lineage, mentioning Zadok, the faithful high priest during the reigns of King David and King Solomon. This lineage confirms his direct connection to the legitimate priesthood of Israel.

Ezra 7:3

Verse: The son of Amariah the son of Azariah the son of Meraioth

  • English Explanation: The lineage continues further back into the history of Israel’s high priesthood, maintaining the chain of custody of spiritual leadership.

Ezra 7:4

Verse: The son of Zerahiah the son of Uzzi the son of Bukki

  • English Explanation: Mentioning these ancestors links Ezra to the generations that served during the turbulent times of the Judges and early Monarchy.

Ezra 7:5

Verse: The son of Abishua the son of Phinehas the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the chief priest

  • English Explanation: Ezra traces his ancestry all the way back to Aaron, the first Chief Priest (High Priest) of Israel, via Phinehas (known for his zeal for God). This completely validates Ezra’s divine right to interpret the Law and lead the spiritual reforms.

Ezra 7:6

Verse: This Ezra went up from Babylon and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses which the LORD God of Israel had given and the king granted him all his request according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him

  • English Explanation: Ezra is introduced as a skilled and well-versed scribe in the Law of Moses. His success in receiving total backing from the Persian king is explicitly attributed to the sovereign favor and “good hand” of God working on his behalf.

Ezra 7:7

Verse: And there went up some of the children of Israel and of the priests and the Levites and the singers and the porters and the Nethinims unto Jerusalem in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king

  • English Explanation: Ezra does not travel alone; a second wave of exiles accompanies him. This diverse group includes everyday citizens, along with various temple servants essential for full restoration: priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, and temple assistants (Nethinims).

Ezra 7:8

Verse: And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month which was in the seventh year of the king

  • English Explanation: The arrival date is noted precisely. The journey takes several months, and they safely reach Jerusalem in the fifth month of King Artaxerxes’ seventh year.

Ezra 7:9

Verse: For upon the first day of the first month began he to go up from Babylon and on the first day of the fifth month came he to Jerusalem according to the good hand of his God upon him

  • English Explanation: The journey began on the first day of the first month and ended exactly four months later. Traveling across dangerous terrain with treasures, their safe arrival without military escort is directly credited to God’s protective and good hand.

Ezra 7:10

Verse: For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD and to do it and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments

  • English Explanation: This is a key thematic verse. Ezra’s life followed a three-step formula for spiritual leadership: he dedicated his heart to study God’s word, to practice it in his personal life, and then to teach its decrees to the community.

Ezra 7:11

Verse: Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave unto Ezra the priest the scribe even a scribe of the words of the commandments of the LORD and of his statutes to Israel

  • English Explanation: The text introduces an official royal decree given by King Artaxerxes to Ezra. The pagan king recognizes Ezra not just as a political leader, but specifically as a priest and expert scribe in the commandments and statutes of Yahweh.

Ezra 7:12

Verse: Artaxerxes king of kings unto Ezra the priest a scribe of the law of the God of heaven perfect peace and at such a time

  • Explanation: The decree begins in Aramaic (the diplomatic language of the empire). Artaxerxes uses his imperial title “king of kings” and addresses Ezra with high respect, acknowledging the true God as the “God of heaven” and wishing Ezra perfect peace.

Ezra 7:13

Verse: I make a decree that all they of the people of Israel and of his priests and Levites in my realm which are minded of their own freewill to go up to Jerusalem go with thee

  • English Explanation: The decree permits absolute freedom of movement. Any Israelite, priest, or Levite living within the Persian Empire who desires to return to Jerusalem out of their own freewill is legally permitted to accompany Ezra.

Ezra 7:14

Verse: Forasmuch as thou art sent of the king and of his seven counsellers to enquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem according to the law of thy God which is in thine hand

  • English Explanation: Ezra is granted official state authority by the king and his inner circle of seven counselors. His mission is to investigate and assess the moral, social, and spiritual condition of Judah based on the Mosaic Law he carries.

Ezra 7:15

Verse: And to carry the silver and gold which the king and his counsellers have freely offered unto the God of Israel whose habitation is in Jerusalem

  • English Explanation: The Persian government backs its decree with financial aid. The king and his counselors donate substantial amounts of silver and gold as a freewill offering specifically dedicated to the God of Israel, honoring His dwelling place in Jerusalem.

Ezra 7:16

Verse: And all the silver and gold that thou canst find in all the province of Babylon with the freewill offering of the people and of the priests offering willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem

  • English Explanation: Along with state funds, Ezra is authorized to collect all financial donations from the wider province of Babylon, including the gifts voluntarily given by Jewish exiles and priests who chose to remain in Babylon but still wanted to support the Temple.

Ezra 7:17

Verse: That thou mayest buy speedily with this money bullocks rams lambs with their meat offerings and their drink offerings and offer them upon the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem

  • English Explanation: The purpose of these extensive funds is clearly defined: to maintain sacrificial worship. Ezra must use the money to purchase sacrificial animals (bulls, rams, lambs) and grain/drink offerings to maintain regular worship on the altar.

Ezra 7:18

Verse: And whatsoever shall seem good to thee and to thy brethren to do with the rest of the silver and the gold that do after the will of your God

  • English Explanation: The decree offers great administrative flexibility. If funds remain after buying the required sacrifices, Ezra and his associates are trusted to use the surplus silver and gold in whatever way aligns with the will of their God.

Ezra 7:19

Verse: The vessels also that are given thee for the service of the house of thy God those deliver thou before the God of Jerusalem

  • English Explanation: King Artaxerxes also sends sacred ceremonial vessels specifically meant for liturgical service. Ezra is charged with presenting these items directly to the temple storage in the presence of God.

Ezra 7:20

Verse: And whatsoever more shall be needful for the house of thy God which thou shalt have occasion to bestow bestow it out of the king’s treasure house

  • English Explanation: This is an extraordinary credit line for the Jewish community. The king promises that if any additional expenses arise for the maintenance of the Temple, Ezra can draw funds directly from the royal treasury.

Ezra 7:21

Verse: And I even I Artaxerxes the king do make a decree to all the treasurers which are beyond the river that whatsoever Ezra the priest the scribe of the law of the God of heaven shall require of you it be done speedily

  • English Explanation: To ensure no local bureaucratic delays, Artaxerxes issues a mandate directly to all regional treasurers in the Trans-Euphrates province (“beyond the river”). They are commanded to immediately provide Ezra with whatever resources he requests.

Ezra 7:22

Verse: Unto an hundred talents of silver and to an hundred measures of wheat and to an hundred baths of wine and to an hundred baths of oil and salt without prescribing how much

  • English Explanation: The king places a generous cap on the regional resources Ezra can claim: up to 100 talents of silver (approx. 3.75 tons), 100 measures (cors) of wheat, 100 baths of wine, and 100 baths of oil. Strikingly, salt (crucial for preserving sacrifices and symbolic of covenants) is granted with no limit at all.
