Nehemiah Chapter
Nehemiah Chapter

Verse-by-Verse Commentary

Verse 1

Scripture:

“The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah And it came to pass in the month Chisleu in the twentieth year as I was in Shushan the palace”

Detailed English Explanation: This introductory verse establishes the historical anchor and authorship of the book. Nehemiah identifies himself by his lineage (“son of Hachaliah”) to distinguish himself from others with the same name. The setting is “Shushan the palace” (Susa, the winter capital of the Persian Empire), and the time is the “month Chisleu” (November/December) in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes I’s reign (around 446 BC). Nehemiah holds a high-ranking position in a foreign, pagan imperial court, yet his heart remains deeply tied to his homeland and his identity as a servant of God.

Verse 2

Scripture:

“That Hanani one of my brethren came he and certain men of Judah and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped which were left of the captivity and concerning Jerusalem”

Detailed English Explanation: Nehemiah receives a delegation from his homeland, led by his biological or spiritual brother, Hanani. Despite living in luxury within the Persian palace, Nehemiah’s primary concern is not his own comfort, but the welfare of his people (the remnant who survived the Babylonian captivity) and the condition of the holy city, Jerusalem. This demonstrates his deep empathy, community awareness, and lack of indifference toward the plight of God’s people.

Verse 3

Scripture:

“And they said unto me The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down and the gates thereof are burned with fire”

Detailed English Explanation: The report is devastating. The returned exiles are facing severe hardship, poverty, and vulnerability (“great affliction and reproach”). Furthermore, Jerusalem’s physical defenses are nonexistent; the walls remain demolished and the gates destroyed by fire since the Babylonian invasion decades prior. An unwalled city in the ancient world meant constant vulnerability to enemy raids and a complete lack of dignity and sovereignty.

Verse 4

Scripture:

“And it came to pass when I heard these words that I sat down and wept and mourned certain days and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven”

Detailed English Explanation: Nehemiah’s reaction to the tragic news is deeply emotional and spiritual. Instead of seeking immediate political or human solutions, he internalizes the grief. He sits, weeps, and mourns for days. Crucially, his grief drives him to spiritual discipline: he fasts and prays before “the God of heaven.” He acknowledges that human effort alone cannot fix Jerusalem’s broken state; divine intervention is required.

Verse 5

Scripture:

“And said I beseech thee O LORD God of heaven the great and terrible God that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments”

Detailed English Explanation: Nehemiah begins his prayer by exalting God rather than immediately listing his demands. He addresses God as the “God of heaven, the great and terrible [awesome] God.” He reminds himself—and acknowledges before God—that Yahweh is a covenant-keeping God who shows steadfast love and mercy to those who love Him and walk in obedience. This lays a foundation of faith based on God’s character, not human worthiness.

Verse 6

Scripture:

“Let thine ear now be attentive and thine eyes open that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant which I pray before thee now day and night for the children of Israel thy servants and confess the sins of the children of Israel which we have sinned against thee both I and my father’s house have sinned”

Detailed English Explanation: Nehemiah pleads for God’s full attention to his persistent, “day and night” intercession. What follows is a profound model of corporate confession. Nehemiah does not distance himself from the community’s failures; he uses the pronoun “we” and explicitly states, “both I and my father’s house have sinned.” He takes personal and generational responsibility for the spiritual decay that led to Jerusalem’s ruin.

Verse 7

Scripture:

“We have dealt very corruptly against thee and have not kept the commandments nor the statutes nor the judgments which thou commandedst thy servant Moses”

Detailed English Explanation: Nehemiah specifies the nature of their sin. They did not just stumble; they “dealt very corruptly” against God. He admits that the nation systematically violated the law given to Moses, ignoring the commandments (moral laws), statutes (ceremonial laws), and judgments (civil laws). This total transparency before God is essential for true repentance and restoration.

Verse 8

Scripture:

“Remember I beseech thee the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses saying If ye transgress I will scatter you abroad among the nations”

Detailed English Explanation: Nehemiah boldly quotes Scripture back to God. He recalls the warnings written in Deuteronomy (specifically Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 30). He acknowledges that their current captivity and exile were entirely justified; God was completely faithful to His word when He scattered them among the nations because of their rebellion and transgression.

Verse 9

Scripture:

“But if ye turn unto me and keep my commandments and do them though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven yet will I gather them from thence and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there”

Detailed English Explanation: This is the turning point of the prayer. Nehemiah reminds God of His promise of restoration. God had promised that if the scattered people repented and returned to His commandments, He would gather them back from the ends of the earth and bring them back to Jerusalem—the place chosen for His Name to dwell. Nehemiah holds onto this covenantal hope as the basis for his petition to rebuild.

Verse 10

Scripture:

“Now these are thy servants and thy people whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power and by thy strong hand”

Detailed English Explanation: Nehemiah appeals to God’s past record of redemption. He reminds God that the Israelites are His personal possession—His servants and His people. He points back to the Exodus, where God redeemed them from Egypt with “great power” and a “strong hand.” Nehemiah’s argument is that since God has already invested so much in saving this nation, He should not abandon them now in their state of ruin.

Verse 11

Scripture:

“O Lord I beseech thee let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant and to the prayer of thy servants who desire to fear thy name and prosper I pray thee thy servant this day and grant him mercy in the sight of this man For I was the king’s cupbearer”

Detailed English Explanation: Nehemiah concludes his prayer with a specific, actionable request. He asks for success (“prosper… thy servant this day”) and divine favor (“grant him mercy”) in the presence of “this man”—referring to King Artaxerxes. The closing sentence reveals his occupation: “For I was the king’s cupbearer.” This was a position of immense trust, influence, and proximity to the king, making Nehemiah uniquely positioned to ask the emperor for permission to rebuild Jerusalem.
