Verse-by-Verse Commentary
Job 1:1
Verse: There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job and that man was perfect and upright and one that feared God and eschewed evil
English Explanation: This introductory verse establishes the historical and moral framework of the narrative. The “land of Uz” is generally believed to be located adjacent to Edom and the Arabian desert. Job is introduced not by a royal lineage, but by his exceptional moral character. Four distinct attributes define him: “perfect” (meaning complete, blameless, or possessing moral integrity, not necessarily sinless perfection), “upright” (just and fair in dealings), “feared God” (deep reverence and awe of the Creator), and “eschewed evil” (actively turning away from and rejecting wickedness). This sets a spiritual benchmark, ensuring the reader knows Job’s upcoming suffering is not a divine punishment for personal sin.
Job 1:2
Verse: And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters
English Explanation: In ancient Near Eastern culture, children—particularly sons—were viewed as the ultimate sign of divine blessing, strength, and security. The specific numbers here (seven sons and three daughters) total ten, which is biblically symbolic of completeness, perfection, and harmony within the household. It shows that Job was blessed not just spiritually, but also within his family dynamic.
Job 1:3
Verse: His substance also was seven thousand sheep and three thousand camels and five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred she asses and a very great household so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east
English Explanation: This verse measures Job’s immense material wealth through his livestock and household size, which served as the standard currency of the patriarchal era. The large numbers represent staggering wealth. Having five hundred “yoke” of oxen implies extensive agricultural operations, requiring vast plots of land and many servants. Job’s status as “the greatest of all the men of the east” emphasizes that his spiritual righteousness was matched by unparalleled worldly success and social influence.
Job 1:4
Verse: And his sons went and feasted in their houses every one his day and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them
English Explanation: “Every one his day” likely refers to the birthdays of the sons or special seasonal festivals. This verse illustrates the deep unity, love, and peace enjoyed by Job’s children. Instead of fighting over inheritance or living isolated lives, they celebrated together, intentionally including their sisters, which highlights a culture of mutual respect and familial joy.
Job 1:5
Verse: And it was so when the days of their feasting were gone about that Job sent and sanctified them and rose up early in the morning and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all for Job said It may be that my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts Thus did Job continually
English Explanation: Job’s role as the patriarchal priest of his family is highlighted here. Even though his children’s feasts were joyous, Job worried about internal, hidden sins (“cursed God in their hearts”). This shows that Job’s righteousness was not superficial; he cared deeply about spiritual purity. The phrase “Thus did Job continually” underscores his unwavering commitment to intercede regularly for his family’s spiritual well-being.
Job 1:6
Verse: Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD and Satan came also among them
English Explanation: The scene abruptly shifts from the earthly realm to the heavenly courtroom. “The sons of God” refers to angelic beings gathering to give an account of their duties to God. “Satan” (which translates to the Adversary or Accuser) appears among them. This indicates that Satan is not equal to God; he is a created being subject to God’s authority and must report to the divine council.
Job 1:7
Verse: And the LORD said unto Satan Whence comest thou Then Satan answered the LORD and said From going to and fro in the earth and from walking up and down in it
English Explanation: God questions Satan not out of ignorance, but to force him to declare his intentions. Satan’s reply reveals his restless, predatory nature. He roams the earth looking for flaws, weaknesses, and opportunities to lead humanity astray. It emphasizes his active, malicious surveillance of mankind.
Job 1:8
Verse: And the LORD said unto Satan Hast thou considered my servant Job that there is none like him in the earth a perfect and an upright man one that feareth God and escheweth evil
English Explanation: God himself initiates the mention of Job, proudly pointing him out as a shining example of true faith. God validates the description given in verse 1, confirming that Job’s righteousness is genuine and noticed by heaven. By calling him “my servant,” God claims an intimate relationship with Job, holding him up as proof that humanity can truly love and revere their Creator.
Job 1:9
Verse: Then Satan answered the LORD and said Doth Job fear God for nought
English Explanation: Satan delivers his core cynical thesis: genuine, selfless love for God does not exist. He argues that Job’s piety is transactional. According to Satan, Job only serves God because it pays well in material blessings and protection. This sets up the central philosophical question of the book: Will a person remain faithful to God if all worldly blessings are taken away?
Job 1:10
Verse: Hast not thou made an hedge about him and about his house and about all that he hath on every side thou hast blessed the work of his hands and his substance is increased in the land
English Explanation: Satan points out the divine “hedge”—a metaphor for supernatural protection and immunity from hardship that God placed around Job, his family, and his assets. Satan argues that anyone would be righteous under such pampered conditions, viewing God’s blessings as a bribe that keeps Job faithful.
Job 1:11
Verse: But put forth thine hand now and touch all that he hath and he will curse thee to thy face
English Explanation: Satan challenges God to a test, predicting that if Job’s wealth and security are stripped away, his faith will instantly evaporate into bitter rebellion. The phrase “curse thee to thy face” represents open, defiant apostasy. Satan wagers that hardship will reveal Job’s righteousness to be entirely fake.
Job 1:12
Verse: And the LORD said unto Satan Behold all that he hath is in thy power only upon himself put not forth thine hand So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD
English Explanation: God accepts the challenge to vindicate Job’s character, but sets strict boundaries: Satan can touch Job’s possessions, but cannot harm his physical body. This verse demonstrates God’s absolute sovereignty. Satan cannot act without permission, and he must operate within the limits set by God. Satan quickly leaves to launch his attack.
Job 1:13
Verse: And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house
English Explanation: The scene shifts back to Earth, intentionally showing Job’s family during a moment of supreme joy and peace at the eldest brother’s house. This setting maximizes the emotional contrast and cruelty of the tragedies that follow, as they strike when Job is least expecting them.
Job 1:14
Verse: And there came a messenger unto Job and said The oxen were plowing and the asses feeding beside them
English Explanation: This begins a rapid succession of four catastrophic reports. The messenger describes a normal, productive day—oxen working and donkeys grazing nearby—highlighting how suddenly and unexpectedly disaster breaks into daily life.
Job 1:15
Verse: And the Sabeans fell upon them and took them away yea they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword and I only am escaped alone to tell thee
English Explanation: The first disaster is human-driven. The Sabeans (raiders from the south) launch a violent ambush, stealing the livestock and murdering the workers. The line “I only am escaped alone to tell thee” is a chilling refrain repeated by all subsequent messengers, showing how Satan deliberately spared one witness to deliver the crushing blow to Job.
Job 1:16
Verse: While he was yet speaking there came also another and said The fire of God is fallen from heaven and hath burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them and I only am escaped alone to tell thee
English Explanation: Before Job can process the first loss, a second disaster strikes—this time from a natural or supernatural source (“fire of God,” usually meaning lightning). This would be especially painful for Job, as it made it look like God Himself was actively fighting against him, seemingly confirming Satan’s plot to make Job feel abandoned by heaven.
Job 1:17
Verse: While he was yet speaking there came also another and said The Chaldeans made out three bands and fell upon the camels and have carried them away yea and slain the servants with the edge of the sword and I only am escaped alone to tell thee
English Explanation: The third wave involves another human military attack. The Chaldeans (raiders from the north) use sophisticated military tactics (three bands) to steal Job’s valuable camels and kill more servants. Job’s massive earthly economy is now completely destroyed.
Job 1:18
Verse: While he was yet speaking there came also another and said Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house
English Explanation: The suspense and horror peak with the arrival of the fourth messenger. The repetition of the setting (“eating and drinking wine”) reminds the reader of the family unity that is about to be shattered in an instant.
Job 1:19
Verse: And behold there came a great wind from the wilderness and smote the four corners of the house and it fell upon the young men and they are dead and I only am escaped alone to tell thee
English Explanation: This is the ultimate, crushing blow: a desert whirlwind strikes the house, causing it to collapse and kill all ten of Job’s children. In a matter of minutes, Job drops from being the wealthiest, happiest father in the region to a childless, bankrupt man. The psychological weight of this successive trauma is immense.
Job 1:20
Verse: Then Job arose and rent his mantle and shaved his head and fell down upon the ground and worshipped
English Explanation: Job’s reaction is profoundly moving. Tearing his robe and shaving his head were traditional Near Eastern expressions of deep, authentic grief. Job does not suppress his pain or pretend it doesn’t hurt. However, instead of cursing God as Satan predicted, Job falls to the ground in worship, proving that his faith survives even when his blessings are gone.
Job 1:21
Verse: And said Naked came I out of my mother’s womb and naked shall I return thither the LORD gave and the LORD hath taken away blessed be the name of the LORD
English Explanation: This verse contains one of the most famous declarations of faith in human history. Job acknowledges a fundamental truth: human beings enter the world with nothing and leave with nothing. He recognizes God’s absolute ownership over his life and family (“the LORD gave and the LORD hath taken away”). By blessing God’s name in the midst of total ruin, Job completely defeats Satan’s initial argument.
Job 1:22
Verse: In all this Job sinned not nor charged God foolishly
English Explanation: The author concludes Chapter 1 by explicitly clearing Job of any wrongdoing. Despite the unimaginable emotional and material trauma, Job did not sin with his lips, nor did he accuse God of injustice or wrongdoing (“charged God foolishly”). Stage one of the trial ends in a total victory for faith.
Job 2:1
Verse: Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD
English Explanation: Chapter 2 opens with a parallel heavenly scene. The angelic council reconvenes, and Satan returns. The repetition highlights that the cosmic debate over human integrity is not yet finished. Satan is forced to face God again after failing his first attempt to break Job.
Job 2:2
Verse: And the LORD said unto Satan From whence comest thou And Satan answered the LORD and said From going to and fro in the earth and from walking up and down in it
English Explanation: The dialogue mirrors Job 1:7. This cosmic repetition emphasizes that despite his failure to make Job curse God, Satan’s relentless habits, malice, and determination to destroy human faith remain entirely unchanged.
Job 2:3
Verse: And the LORD said unto Satan Hast thou considered my servant Job that there is none like him in the earth a perfect and an upright man one that feareth God and escheweth evil and still he holdeth fast his integrity although thou movedst me against him to destroy him without cause
English Explanation: God proudly vindicates Job a second time, pointing out that Job “still holdeth fast his integrity” even after losing everything. God directly addresses Satan’s failure, noting that Satan wanted to destroy Job “without cause” (meaning Job did nothing to deserve this suffering). This confirms that righteous people can experience profound suffering that is completely unrelated to personal sin.
