The passage in Genesis 5:20–24 is part of the genealogy from Adam to Noah. While many names in this chapter follow the same pattern—listing a person’s age, descendants, total lifespan, and death—the account of Enoch stands out as one of the most remarkable in the entire Bible.

The passage begins by concluding the life of Jared, Enoch’s father. Jared lived an extraordinary 962 years, making him one of the longest-lived individuals recorded in Scripture. Like the others in the genealogy, the verse ends with the simple statement, “and he died,” reminding readers that death had become the common destiny of humanity after sin entered the world.

The focus then shifts to Enoch. At the age of sixty-five, Enoch became the father of Methuselah. Although becoming a father is presented as an ordinary event, the Bible immediately highlights a significant change in Enoch’s life. After the birth of Methuselah, Enoch “walked with God” for three hundred years.
