Detailed Explanation (English)
Genesis 6:1–4 introduces one of the most discussed passages in the Bible. These verses describe the condition of humanity before the Great Flood and reveal how human society had become increasingly corrupt. They also introduce mysterious figures known as the “sons of God” and the “giants” (commonly called the Nephilim in many Bible translations).
1. Humanity Continued to Multiply
The passage begins by explaining that the human population increased rapidly. Families spread across the earth, fulfilling God’s earlier command to be fruitful and multiply. However, as the population grew, sin also increased. The focus of these verses is not merely population growth but the moral decline that accompanied it.
2. Who Were the “Sons of God”?
Bible scholars have presented several interpretations regarding the identity of the “sons of God.”
The first interpretation is that they were godly descendants of Seth, the son of Adam, who married ungodly women from the line of Cain. This view emphasizes the spiritual danger of abandoning faith and entering relationships that pull people away from God.
A second interpretation suggests that the “sons of God” were angelic beings. Supporters of this view point to passages such as Job 1:6 and Job 2:1, where the phrase “sons of God” refers to heavenly beings. This interpretation has been debated for centuries and remains a topic of theological discussion.
A third interpretation understands the phrase as referring to powerful rulers or kings who abused their authority by taking any women they desired. According to this view, the passage highlights human pride, oppression, and misuse of power.
Because faithful Bible interpreters hold different views, it is wise to recognize that the passage contains difficult questions while focusing on the clear message: humanity was becoming increasingly sinful and rebellious before God.
3. “They Took Them Wives”
The phrase “they took them wives of all which they chose” suggests that human desire was becoming more important than obedience to God. Marriage, which God designed as a sacred covenant, was increasingly treated according to personal preference and selfish ambition.
This verse demonstrates how people ignored God’s standards and allowed physical attraction and personal desire to become their primary guide.
4. God’s Spirit Would Not Always Strive with Humanity
Genesis 6:3 records God’s declaration that His Spirit would not strive with humanity forever. This statement teaches that although God is patient and merciful, there comes a time when persistent rebellion results in judgment.
The reference to “an hundred and twenty years” has generally been understood in two primary ways.
One interpretation sees it as a countdown before the Flood, giving humanity approximately 120 years to repent while Noah prepared the ark.
Another interpretation understands it as referring to the shortening of human lifespan over time.
Both views emphasize God’s patience as well as His justice.
5. The Giants (Nephilim)
Genesis 6:4 mentions “giants in the earth.” The Hebrew word is “Nephilim,” a term that has generated considerable discussion.
Some understand the Nephilim as unusually large and powerful warriors.
Others believe the word refers to violent, influential, or fearsome individuals rather than emphasizing physical height alone.
The text further describes them as “mighty men” and “men of renown,” indicating that they became famous because of their strength, influence, or military achievements.
6. The Overall Message
Regardless of the interpretation of certain details, the central message is clear. Human wickedness was spreading rapidly across the earth. People increasingly followed their own desires instead of God’s will. Violence, pride, and corruption became common, preparing the way for the judgment that would come through the Flood in the following chapters.
At the same time, these verses remind readers of God’s patience. Before judgment came, God gave humanity time to turn back. His warning demonstrated both His justice and His mercy.
For modern readers, Genesis 6:1–4 encourages faithfulness to God, wise choices in relationships, humility, and respect for God’s commands. It also reminds believers that God sees human actions and calls people to live according to His righteousness.
(Urdu)
(Nephilim)
