Genesis 8:2 describes an important moment after the great flood during the time of Noah. The verse states:
“The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained.”
This verse explains that the sources of the floodwaters were closed by God. Earlier in the flood narrative, water came from two major sources: the “fountains of the deep” and the “windows of heaven.” Genesis 8:2 marks the turning point when those sources were stopped, allowing the waters to begin decreasing.
Meaning of “The Fountains of the Deep”
The phrase “the fountains of the deep” refers to the underground sources of water that were opened during the flood. In Genesis 7:11, it is described that the fountains of the great deep were broken open, releasing waters upon the earth.
This expression shows the enormous scale of the flood. The water was not only falling from above but was also rising from beneath the earth. The verse emphasizes that the flood was beyond ordinary rainfall; it was a unique event involving the entire creation.
From a spiritual perspective, the closing of these fountains represents the end of judgment and the beginning of restoration. The same God who allowed the waters to rise also controlled when they would stop.
Meaning of “The Windows of Heaven Were Stopped”
The phrase “the windows of heaven” describes the opening of the skies through which rain poured down upon the earth. During the flood, continuous rain fell for forty days and forty nights.
When the windows of heaven were stopped, it showed that the period of heavy rain had ended. The action demonstrates God’s authority over nature. The heavens and the earth were under His command.
This teaches an important spiritual lesson: difficult seasons do not continue forever. Just as the rain was eventually restrained, times of hardship can come to an end according to God’s timing.
Meaning of “The Rain from Heaven Was Restrained”
The final part of the verse says:
“And the rain from heaven was restrained.”
This indicates that the flood was no longer increasing. The water cycle returned to normal, and the earth began the process of recovery.
The restraint of the rain was an act of mercy. Although judgment had come because of human wickedness, God also provided a way for life to continue through Noah, his family, and the animals preserved in the ark.

1. God Has Control Over Creation
Genesis 8:2 reminds readers that nature is not uncontrolled. The opening and closing of the waters happened according to God’s command. The verse presents God as the One who governs the forces of creation.

The flood was a time of judgment, but it was not endless. God stopped the waters at the appointed time. This reveals that God’s actions are purposeful and measured.
3. Restoration Follows Difficult Times
The stopping of the rain was the first step toward a renewed earth. After destruction came restoration. This gives hope that difficult periods can lead to new beginnings.
4. God Remembers and Protects
Before this verse, Genesis 8:1 says that God remembered Noah. This does not mean God had forgotten him; rather, it means God acted faithfully toward Noah and fulfilled His promise.

یہ آیت حضرت نوحؑ کے زمانے کے عظیم طوفان کے بعد کے ایک اہم مرحلے کو بیان کرتی ہے۔ اس آیت میں بتایا گیا ہے کہ جس طرح خدا کے حکم سے پانی زمین پر آیا تھا، اسی طرح خدا کے حکم سے پانی کے آنے کے راستے بھی بند کر دیے گئے۔
طوفان کا واقعہ صرف مسلسل بارش کا نتیجہ نہیں تھا بلکہ زمین کے اندر موجود پانی کے چشمے بھی پھوٹ پڑے تھے۔ پیدائش کی کتاب میں بتایا گیا ہے کہ آسمان سے بارش بھی ہوئی اور زمین کے اندر سے پانی بھی نکلا۔
“گہرے پانی کے چشمے” کا مطلب
“گہرے پانی کے چشمے” سے مراد زمین کے اندر موجود پانی کے ذخائر ہیں جو طوفان کے وقت کھل گئے تھے۔ یہ الفاظ اس بات کو ظاہر کرتے ہیں کہ طوفان ایک غیر معمولی واقعہ تھا جس میں زمین اور آسمان دونوں سے پانی آیا۔
روحانی لحاظ سے یہ بات سکھاتی ہے کہ خدا ہر چیز پر اختیار رکھتا ہے۔ جس طرح خدا نے پانی کو آنے دیا، اسی طرح اس نے اسے روک بھی دیا۔

آسمان کی کھڑکیاں ایک علامتی انداز ہے جس سے مراد بہت زیادہ بارش کا ہونا ہے۔ طوفان کے دوران آسمان سے مسلسل بارش ہوتی رہی، لیکن ایک وقت آیا جب خدا کے حکم سے بارش رک گئی۔
