Matthew 1:3 Explanation (English)

Matthew 1:3 is part of the genealogy of Jesus Christ found in the opening chapter of the Gospel of Matthew. Although it appears to be only a list of names, every individual mentioned carries historical, spiritual, and theological importance. Matthew carefully records the family line of Jesus to demonstrate that He is the promised Messiah who fulfills the prophecies given throughout the Old Testament.

The verse states:

“And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram.”

The first person mentioned is Judas, more commonly known as Judah, one of the twelve sons of Jacob. From Judah came the royal tribe of Israel, fulfilling the blessing Jacob pronounced in Genesis 49, where he declared that the ruler would come from Judah. This prophecy ultimately pointed to Jesus Christ.

Matthew also mentions Thamar (Tamar), which is remarkable because women are not frequently included in ancient genealogies. Tamar’s story is recorded in Genesis 38. After suffering injustice within Judah’s family, Tamar acted in a controversial way to preserve her deceased husband’s family line. While the circumstances were complicated and morally difficult, God worked through imperfect human situations to continue His covenant purposes.

The twins born to Tamar were Phares (Perez) and Zara (Zerah). Although Zerah appeared first during birth, Perez was actually born first and became the ancestor through whom the Messianic line continued. This unusual birth reminds readers that God often works in unexpected ways. Human expectations do not limit God’s plans.

Perez became the father of Esrom (Hezron). Hezron was one of the important ancestors of Israel during the period when Jacob’s family settled in Egypt. His descendants continued the family line that eventually led to King David and, generations later, to Jesus Christ.

Esrom became the father of Aram. Although Scripture provides relatively few details about Aram personally, his place in the genealogy is significant because every generation demonstrates God’s faithful preservation of His promises. Each individual represents another link in the chain leading to the birth of Jesus Christ.

One of the greatest lessons of Matthew 1:3 is that God works through ordinary and imperfect people. Judah made serious mistakes, Tamar experienced hardship, and the family’s history was far from perfect. Yet God’s plan of redemption continued without interruption. This demonstrates that God’s grace is greater than human failure.

Another important lesson is God’s faithfulness across generations. Hundreds of years passed between Judah and Jesus Christ, yet every promise God made continued to unfold exactly according to His plan. Human history may appear uncertain, but God remains faithful to His covenant.

Matthew’s inclusion of Tamar also highlights God’s concern for people who were marginalized or treated unfairly. Her appearance in the genealogy shows that God values every individual and often chooses people whom society overlooks to accomplish His purposes.

This verse also emphasizes the historical reliability of the Gospel. Matthew records real people, real families, and real generations. Christianity is rooted in actual history rather than myths or legends. The genealogy connects the Old Testament with the New Testament, showing one continuous story of God’s salvation.

Christians also see in this genealogy a picture of hope. No family history is perfect. Many biblical ancestors had failures, disappointments, and complicated lives. Yet God still fulfilled His promises through them. This encourages believers to trust that God can bring redemption even from difficult circumstances.

Ultimately, Matthew 1:3 points beyond the names themselves to Jesus Christ. Every generation listed exists because it leads toward the coming of the Savior. The genealogy is not merely a historical record; it is evidence that God faithfully carried out His redemptive plan from generation to generation until the birth of Christ.

(Urdu)
