English Explanation

Genesis 19:2 presents an important moment in the account of Lot and the two visitors who came to the city of Sodom. In this verse, Lot sees the visitors approaching and immediately offers them shelter in his home. His words show respect, humility, and a strong desire to protect and care for those who had entered the city.

When Lot says, “turn in, I pray you, into your servant’s house,” he is inviting the visitors to leave the dangers of the public streets and enter a place of safety. In the ancient world, hospitality was considered a great responsibility. Travelers often faced difficulties such as harsh weather, dangerous roads, and unfriendly environments. A person who offered food, water, rest, and protection was showing kindness and moral responsibility.

Lot’s request that they “tarry all night” shows his concern for their comfort. He does not simply offer a temporary greeting; he invites them to stay and rest. The mention of washing their feet reflects a common practice of that time. Since people usually traveled by walking on dusty roads, washing feet was an act of hospitality and refreshment.

Lot also says that they should “rise up early, and go on your ways.” This suggests that he wanted them to receive rest and continue their journey safely. His words show care and urgency because he understood that remaining outside at night could expose them to harm.

The visitors respond, “Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.” Their answer indicates that they initially refused Lot’s offer and intended to remain outside. This creates tension in the story because the following events reveal that the city of Sodom was filled with corruption and danger. Lot’s insistence on bringing them into his house becomes a significant part of the narrative.

This verse teaches several important lessons. First, it highlights the value of kindness toward strangers. Throughout Scripture, hospitality is often presented as a virtue that reflects compassion and righteousness. Second, it shows the importance of protecting others from harm. Lot’s actions demonstrate that he was willing to take responsibility for the safety of his guests.

The verse also provides a contrast between individual righteousness and the surrounding environment. While the city had become known for wrongdoing, Lot’s decision to welcome and protect strangers shows an act of mercy and responsibility. The passage encourages readers to consider how they treat visitors, travelers, and people in need.

Genesis 19:2 is therefore not only a historical statement but also a moral lesson about hospitality, courage, and concern for others. It reminds believers that kindness and protection of others are valuable qualities that reflect a person’s character.
