Genesis 19:37 states that Lot’s firstborn daughter gave birth to a son and named him Moab. The name “Moab” is traditionally understood to be connected with the phrase “from my father,” referring to the circumstances surrounding his birth. Moab later became the ancestor of the Moabite people, a nation that lived east of the Dead Sea.

Genesis 19:38 explains that the younger daughter also had a son and named him Ben-Ammi. The name “Ben-Ammi” means “son of my people” or “son of my relative.” He became the ancestor of the Ammonites, another nation that settled in the region east of the Jordan River.

These verses come after the account of Lot escaping the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. After the loss of their home and the events that followed, Lot and his daughters lived in isolation. The daughters believed that their family line was in danger of ending, and they made decisions based on their fears and limited understanding. The births of Moab and Ben-Ammi became the result of those choices.
