English Explanation
Titus 3:9 gives practical guidance about the kind of discussions Christians should avoid. The Apostle Paul was instructing Titus, a Christian leader, about how believers should conduct themselves within the church and in their relationships with others.
The verse begins with the command “But avoid foolish questions.” This does not mean that every difficult question is foolish. Christianity encourages sincere questions, learning, wisdom, and the search for truth. A foolish question in this context refers to arguments or speculative discussions that do not produce spiritual growth or lead people toward truth and godly living.
Paul then mentions “genealogies.” Genealogies were important in Jewish history and Scripture, particularly because family lines could establish historical identity, tribal relationships, and priestly descent. However, disputes and endless speculation about genealogies could become distractions from the central message of Christian faith. When people become more interested in proving their theories than in living according to God’s truth, discussion can become spiritually unproductive.
The next concern is “contentions.” Contentions are disputes, quarrels, and hostile disagreements. A disagreement itself is not necessarily wrong. There are times when Christians must defend truth and correct serious error. However, Paul warns against arguments that become driven by pride, anger, competition, or the desire to win rather than by a genuine desire to understand and follow truth.
Paul also refers to “strivings about the law.” This points toward disputes concerning interpretations and applications of the Mosaic Law. In the early Christian community, questions surrounding Jewish regulations and religious practices could become a source of conflict. Paul repeatedly emphasized that believers should not allow such controversies to overshadow the transforming work of God’s grace.
The reason for avoiding these disputes is given clearly: “for they are unprofitable and vain.” In other words, some debates consume enormous amounts of time and energy without producing anything spiritually beneficial. They may make people argumentative without making them wiser, kinder, more faithful, or more obedient to God.
This verse therefore teaches an important principle of Christian communication: not every argument deserves our participation.
A believer should learn to distinguish between a discussion that genuinely seeks truth and an argument that merely creates division. Before entering a debate, it is helpful to ask:
- Will this discussion help someone understand God’s truth?
- Will it encourage faith and godly living?
- Is the discussion based on Scripture and sincerity?
- Am I seeking truth, or merely trying to prove that I am right?
- Is this conversation producing peace or unnecessary conflict?
Titus 3:9 should not be understood as an instruction to avoid studying Scripture or asking serious theological questions. Rather, it warns against fruitless controversy. A person can spend hours debating minor points while neglecting love, humility, mercy, obedience, and good works.
The surrounding passage is also important. Earlier in Titus 3, Paul emphasizes salvation by God’s grace and the importance of believers devoting themselves to good works. Immediately after verse 9, Paul gives further instructions concerning a divisive person. This shows that Titus 3:9 is part of a larger teaching about maintaining healthy Christian relationships and avoiding unnecessary division.
The practical lesson is especially relevant today. Modern discussions can easily become arguments about denominations, interpretations, religious traditions, family histories, secondary doctrines, or theological terminology. Social media can make these disputes even more intense because people often respond quickly and emotionally.
The wisdom of Titus 3:9 is therefore highly practical: focus on what is true, useful, constructive, and spiritually fruitful.
A mature Christian does not have to answer every challenge or enter every debate. Sometimes wisdom means speaking; at other times wisdom means refusing to participate in an argument that will only produce anger and division.
The verse ultimately encourages believers to use their words responsibly. Christian knowledge should lead to humility and good works rather than pride and quarrels. A discussion that increases love, truth, faith, and obedience can be valuable. A discussion that produces endless arguments without spiritual benefit is precisely the kind of controversy Paul tells Titus to avoid.
