Detailed Explanation in English
“Therefore”
The word “therefore” connects Haggai 1:10 with what God had already said in the preceding verses. The people had been experiencing hardship, yet they had not seriously considered why these difficulties were occurring.
In Haggai 1:5–9, God told the people to consider their ways. They had sown much but harvested little. They ate but were not satisfied, drank but remained thirsty, and earned wages only to put them into a bag with holes. They were living in their own houses while God’s house remained neglected.
The word “therefore” shows that the withholding of dew and fruit was connected with the situation described previously. The verse is not simply a statement about weather; it is part of God’s message concerning obedience, priorities, and covenant responsibility.
“The heaven over you is stayed from dew”
In the ancient agricultural society of Judah, dew was extremely important. Rain was not the only source of moisture. Dew provided additional moisture for plants and crops, particularly during dry periods.
The phrase “is stayed from dew” means that the dew was being withheld or prevented from coming upon the land.
This picture demonstrates how dependent human beings are upon God’s provision. People can plant seeds, work in fields, and prepare the soil, but they cannot command the heavens to provide moisture.
The statement also emphasizes that material difficulties can sometimes cause people to examine their spiritual priorities. In Haggai’s message, the people had focused heavily on their own comfort while neglecting the rebuilding of the temple.
The verse therefore teaches an important principle: God’s people should not allow personal prosperity and comfort to become more important than obedience to God.
“And the earth is stayed from her fruit”
The second part of the verse moves from heaven to earth.
The heavens withheld dew, and consequently the earth was prevented from producing its expected fruit. Agriculture depends upon a chain of provision: moisture, soil, seed, growth, and ultimately harvest.
When one part of that process is interrupted, the harvest suffers.
The expression “her fruit” refers to the produce of the land. Crops and agricultural products were essential to the survival and economic stability of the people.
In the context of Haggai, this lack of agricultural productivity was a physical illustration of a deeper spiritual problem. The people were working hard, but their efforts were not producing the results they expected.
The Main Spiritual Lesson
Haggai 1:10 should not be interpreted as a universal promise that every financial problem, poor harvest, illness, or difficult circumstance is caused by personal disobedience. Scripture contains many examples of faithful people experiencing suffering for reasons that cannot be reduced to wrongdoing.
Instead, Haggai 1:10 must be understood within its specific historical and covenant context.
God was addressing the returned Jewish community concerning their neglect of the temple. The people had made their own homes a priority while God’s house remained unfinished.
The central question was therefore not simply, “Why are we not prosperous?” The deeper question was, “Are we putting God first?”
This is one of the most important themes in the book of Haggai.
The people were working, but their work was not bringing satisfaction. They were earning money, but it seemed to disappear. They were planting crops, but the harvest was inadequate. God called them to stop and reconsider their priorities.
A Message About Priorities
Haggai 1:10 can be understood alongside the surrounding passage as a warning against misplaced priorities.
The people had enough time and resources to build their own houses, yet they repeatedly postponed rebuilding the temple. Their actions suggested that their personal interests had become more important than their responsibility toward God.
The message is therefore relevant as a spiritual principle today: people should examine what receives their time, energy, attention, and resources.
The verse encourages believers to ask:
- What comes first in my life?
- Have personal ambitions replaced spiritual responsibilities?
- Am I pursuing comfort while neglecting obedience?
- Do my actions demonstrate that God is truly important to me?
- Have I taken time to examine my ways?
The purpose of such examination is not to create fear but to encourage repentance and restoration.
Detailed Explanation in Urdu
“Therefore” — “پس”
“The heaven over you is stayed from dew”
“And the earth is stayed from her fruit”
