Detailed English Explanation

“Seeing it is a righteous thing with God”

The verse begins by emphasizing the character of God: He is righteous.

The word “righteous” means morally right, just, fair, and completely free from corruption or injustice. Human judgment can be incomplete because people do not know every fact, motive, or circumstance. God, however, sees everything perfectly.

Paul’s point is that God’s judgment is never arbitrary. When God judges, His judgment is based on perfect truth and righteousness.

This is especially meaningful for people who suffer unfairly. Sometimes a person may be falsely accused, mistreated, rejected, persecuted, or harmed without receiving justice from human authorities. 2 Thessalonians 1:6 assures believers that injustice does not escape God’s attention.

“To recompense tribulation”

The word “recompense” refers to repaying or rendering according to what has been done.

Paul is describing God’s righteous response to those who deliberately trouble His people. This does not mean that believers should take revenge themselves. Rather, it establishes the principle that God is the ultimate Judge.

The word “tribulation” refers to severe trouble, distress, affliction, or persecution. The Christians in Thessalonica were experiencing hardship because of their faith.

Therefore, Paul is teaching that God sees both sides of the situation: He sees the suffering of His people, and He also sees those who intentionally inflict suffering upon them.

“To them that trouble you”

This phrase identifies the people who were causing suffering to the Thessalonian believers.

The important lesson is that persecution is not hidden from God. A person may be able to hide wrongdoing from other people, but nothing is hidden from God.

For Christians experiencing injustice, this can be a source of comfort. The believer does not need to believe that justice depends entirely upon human institutions or circumstances. God’s judgment is greater than human judgment.

At the same time, the verse should not encourage hatred. Christians are called elsewhere in Scripture to love their enemies, pray for those who persecute them, and leave vengeance to God. Consequently, this verse is about divine justice rather than personal revenge.

The Context of 2 Thessalonians 1:6

The surrounding verses make the meaning even clearer. Paul speaks about the coming revelation of Jesus Christ and God’s righteous judgment. He explains that God will give relief to those who are suffering and will deal justly with those who reject Him and persecute His people.

This gives the suffering believer a future perspective.

The message is essentially:

Your suffering is seen. Your faithfulness matters. Injustice will not have the final word. God will judge righteously.

That message remains deeply relevant today.

Practical Lessons from 2 Thessalonians 1:6

1. God sees suffering

When people experience persecution, injustice, or rejection, they can sometimes feel forgotten. This verse reminds believers that God sees what happens to them.

2. God is perfectly just

People can make mistakes in judgment, but God does not. His justice is based on complete knowledge and perfect righteousness.

3. Believers should not live for revenge

The verse does not tell Christians to personally repay those who hurt them. Instead, it points to God as the righteous Judge.

4. Suffering does not mean God has abandoned His people

The Thessalonians were suffering despite their faith. Their difficulties were not proof that God had forgotten them.

5. God’s justice gives hope

A believer can endure present difficulties while trusting that God ultimately brings justice. The present situation is not necessarily the final chapter.

“Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;”

“Seeing it is a righteous thing with God”

“To recompense tribulation”

“To them that trouble you”
