English Explanation of Genesis 25:6

1. “But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had”

The verse begins by referring to Abraham’s sons through concubines. In the biblical context, a concubine was a woman who occupied a recognized secondary marital status in the household. Abraham’s family had become extensive, with children from different women.

The important point in this verse is that Abraham’s other sons were not treated as though they had no value. They were part of Abraham’s family, and Abraham acknowledged them by giving them gifts.

This shows that Abraham did not simply abandon or disregard these children. He made provision for them before his death.

2. “Abraham gave gifts”

The word “gifts” is significant. Genesis 25:5 states that Abraham gave “all that he had” unto Isaac, while verse 6 explains that he gave gifts to his other sons.

This creates a distinction between the principal inheritance and personal gifts.

Isaac was the son through whom the particular covenant promises associated with Abraham were to continue. Therefore, the biblical narrative emphasizes Isaac’s unique position in the inheritance.

At the same time, Abraham gave material gifts to his other sons. This suggests an orderly arrangement of his household and possessions before his death.

The passage teaches an important principle: family relationships and inheritance responsibilities can involve both generosity and distinction. Giving Isaac the principal inheritance did not mean that Abraham had to refuse every blessing to his other children.

3. “And sent them away from Isaac his son”

Abraham did more than give gifts. He also sent his other sons away from Isaac.

This separation was important because Isaac was the son connected with the covenant line described in the preceding chapters of Genesis.

Abraham therefore established physical distance between Isaac and his other sons. This helped prevent future disputes over household authority, inheritance, and the continuation of the family line.

The action also resembles an earlier event involving Ishmael. In Genesis 21, Sarah asked Abraham to send Hagar and Ishmael away, and God instructed Abraham to listen to Sarah while assuring him that Ishmael would also become a nation.

Genesis 25:6 shows Abraham making a similar practical arrangement concerning his other sons.

4. “While he yet lived”

This phrase is especially meaningful.

Abraham did not wait until after his death to organize his household. He made these arrangements while he was still alive.

That demonstrates foresight and responsibility. Abraham knew that his death would bring changes to the family, so he established the arrangement beforehand.

From a practical perspective, the verse presents Abraham as a man who dealt with family and inheritance matters deliberately rather than leaving everything uncertain for his descendants.

5. “Eastward, unto the east country”

The sons were sent toward the east.

In the geographical language of Genesis, the eastern regions generally refer to lands lying east of Canaan. The biblical narrative frequently distinguishes Canaan from territories farther east.

The statement does not merely provide geography. It emphasizes that Abraham’s sons were separated geographically from Isaac and from the central location associated with the covenant story.

Thus, Genesis 25:6 contributes to the larger biblical theme in which the descendants of Abraham become numerous, while the covenant narrative continues specifically through Isaac.

Main Spiritual Lessons

Genesis 25:6 offers several lessons for readers today.

Family responsibility

Abraham provided gifts for his other sons before sending them away. This demonstrates the importance of making responsible provision for family members.

Order and wisdom

Abraham distinguished between Isaac’s principal inheritance and the gifts given to his other sons. The passage shows that responsible leadership sometimes requires making clear arrangements rather than allowing uncertainty to create conflict.

God’s covenant purpose

The verse helps establish that Abraham’s descendants would become many peoples, but the specific covenant line continued through Isaac. The distinction between Isaac and the other sons is therefore important within the overall story of Genesis.

Planning for the future

The words “while he yet lived” highlight the wisdom of making necessary decisions before a crisis occurs. Abraham organized his household before his death rather than leaving major questions unresolved.

“But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country.”
— Genesis 25:6 (KJV)

2. “Abraham gave gifts”

3. “Sent them away from Isaac”

4. “While he yet lived”
