English Explanation

1. “And the first came out red”

The first child born was Esau. The verse describes him as red. This unusual physical characteristic is mentioned because Esau’s appearance was distinctive from the moment of his birth.

The biblical account does not present this detail merely as an ordinary description. Esau’s appearance becomes part of the way he is remembered throughout the biblical narrative. Later passages again describe characteristics associated with his appearance. The immediate point in Genesis 25 is that the firstborn twin had a noticeably different appearance from his brother.

2. “All over like an hairy garment”

The verse continues by saying that Esau was covered with hair, comparing his body to a hairy garment. This was another unusual feature that distinguished him from Jacob.

The name Esau is traditionally associated with the idea of being hairy. Bible translations and footnotes commonly connect the name with this physical characteristic.

Therefore, his name was connected with something that could be observed immediately at his birth. The description emphasizes how different the two brothers were from the beginning.

3. “And they called his name Esau”

Because of his distinctive appearance, the child was given the name Esau.

In biblical narratives, names can carry meaning and sometimes point to a person’s circumstances, characteristics, or future story. In Esau’s case, the connection between his name and his hairy appearance is particularly clear in this passage.

His identity as the elder son would later become extremely important because the firstborn traditionally held a special position within the family.

4. “And after that came his brother out”

After Esau was born, his twin brother followed.

The wording emphasizes that Jacob was the second child to emerge. This detail becomes important because Jacob’s position as the younger brother plays a major role in the events that follow in Genesis.

Although Jacob was born second, the biblical story later shows that his life would become deeply connected with the promises given to Abraham’s family.

5. “And his hand took hold on Esau’s heel”

The most striking detail concerning Jacob’s birth is that his hand was holding Esau’s heel.

This is an extraordinary image: the older brother comes out first, while the younger brother follows with his hand grasping his brother’s heel.

The detail is significant because the name Jacob is connected with the Hebrew idea of taking hold of the heel or grasping the heel. Bible translation notes also explain the name in terms of “one who takes by the heel” or “supplants.”

The physical event at birth therefore becomes associated with Jacob’s name.

6. The meaning of Jacob’s name

The name Jacob has a range of related meanings in the biblical context. It is associated with the idea of grasping the heel, and the expression can also carry the sense of supplanting or taking another person’s place.

This becomes especially interesting when the later story is considered. Jacob and Esau eventually become involved in disputes concerning the birthright and the blessing of their father Isaac.

However, Genesis 25:25–26 itself should first be understood as a description of their birth. The later events give the name additional significance, but the passage does not say that every later action of Jacob was determined by the physical circumstance of his birth.

7. Isaac was sixty years old

The final part of verse 26 states that Isaac was sixty years old when the twins were born

This provides an important chronological detail. Isaac had waited many years before becoming the father of these sons. Their birth was therefore a significant event in the continuation of his family line.

Genesis presents Isaac as the son of Abraham and Sarah and as part of the covenant family through which God’s promises would continue.

The Deeper Meaning of Esau and Jacob’s Birth

Genesis 25:25–26 is more than a record of two children being born. It introduces a major biblical story about birthright, blessing, family conflict, human choices, and God’s purposes.

Esau and Jacob were twins, but they were very different. Esau was the firstborn, while Jacob was the younger brother. Their different positions within the family would eventually become the source of significant conflict.

The next verse describes their different lifestyles: Esau became a skillful hunter and a man of the field, while Jacob was described as a quiet man who lived in tents.

This contrast helps readers understand that the differences between the brothers were not limited to their appearance at birth. As they grew, their personalities, interests, and ways of life also developed differently.

What Can We Learn From Genesis 25:25–26?

One important lesson is that God’s purposes are not limited by human expectations.

From a human perspective, Esau was the elder son and therefore appeared to have the natural advantage. Jacob was the younger twin, born immediately after Esau. Yet the subsequent biblical narrative gives Jacob a central place in the continuation of the covenant family.

The passage also reminds readers that a person’s beginning does not reveal the entire story of his life. Esau and Jacob entered the world in a very unusual way, but their future involved choices, struggles, relationships, blessings, mistakes, and transformation.

Another lesson is that family relationships can become complicated when people value different things. The later story shows how the brothers’ different priorities contributed to serious conflict. Their story encourages readers to think carefully about jealousy, ambition, favoritism, deception, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

Most importantly, the story demonstrates that God’s purposes can unfold through circumstances that human beings do not fully understand at the beginning.

“And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau. And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.”

1. “And the first came out red”

2. “All over like an hairy garment”

3. “And they called his name Esau”

4. “And after that came his brother out”

5. “And his hand took hold on Esau’s heel”
