Detailed English Explanation

“And it came to pass, that when Isaac was old”

The verse begins by telling us that Isaac had reached old age. Isaac was the son of Abraham and Sarah and had an important place in the family through which God’s covenant promises were continuing. His old age is significant because the events that follow concern the blessing that Isaac was preparing to give to his son.

In the biblical culture of that time, a father’s blessing could carry great importance. It was not merely a kind expression or a few encouraging words. A formal paternal blessing could communicate inheritance, authority, family responsibility, and expectations concerning the future.

Isaac therefore appears to be approaching an important moment in his life. His advanced age helps explain why he was preparing to deal with matters concerning his sons and their future.

“And his eyes were dim, so that he could not see”

The next part of the verse describes Isaac’s physical condition. His eyesight had become extremely weak. The statement that he could not see is especially important because Isaac’s inability to recognize people visually becomes a significant part of the events in this chapter.

His poor eyesight also creates an atmosphere of uncertainty. Isaac has to depend on his other senses and on what his family members tell him. This physical limitation becomes connected with the deception that occurs later in Genesis 27.

It is important, however, not to interpret Isaac’s blindness as proof that he had lost all wisdom or understanding. The verse specifically describes a physical weakness—his inability to see. The narrative later shows how this limitation becomes an important factor in the actions of the family.

“He called Esau his eldest son”

Isaac then calls Esau, his eldest son. Esau was the firstborn son of Isaac and Rebekah, while Jacob was his younger twin brother.

The description “his eldest son” is important because birth order had considerable significance in the ancient world. The firstborn traditionally held a special position within the family and could have particular inheritance responsibilities and privileges.

Esau was also known as a skilled hunter, and later verses show that Isaac had a particular affection for him. Genesis 27 therefore presents a family in which the relationships between Isaac, Rebekah, Esau, and Jacob are important to the unfolding story.

Isaac calling Esau privately begins the sequence of events that will eventually lead to Jacob receiving the blessing intended by Isaac.

“And said unto him, My son”

Isaac addresses Esau affectionately as “My son.” This short expression shows the personal relationship between father and son.

Even though the chapter eventually becomes associated with deception and conflict, this opening moment is presented in a warm and familiar way. Isaac is speaking directly to his son, and Esau is responding to his father.

The words also prepare the reader for a personal conversation rather than a public announcement. Isaac has specifically called Esau because he wants to communicate something important to him.

“And he said unto him, Behold, here am I”

Esau answers, “Behold, here am I.” This expression communicates readiness and attentiveness. Esau is telling his father that he is present and ready to listen.

The phrase “here am I” is also found elsewhere in Scripture when people respond to someone who calls them. It can express willingness to hear what is being said.

At this point, Esau does not know everything that Isaac is about to ask of him. The following verses reveal that Isaac intends to ask Esau to hunt game and prepare food for him before Isaac gives him his blessing.

Spiritual and Life Lessons

Genesis 27:1 offers several lessons that can be considered beyond the immediate family story.

First, human life is subject to physical weakness and aging. Isaac was a patriarch who had experienced many important events, yet he eventually reached old age and suffered serious loss of eyesight. The verse reminds readers that physical strength and abilities change with time.

Second, family relationships can be complicated. Isaac loved Esau, while Rebekah favored Jacob. The different relationships within the family eventually contributed to serious conflict. This encourages readers to consider the importance of honesty, fairness, communication, and wisdom within families.

Third, important decisions should be approached carefully. Isaac was preparing to give a major blessing, and the decisions surrounding that blessing had lasting consequences. The story that follows demonstrates how actions taken during important family moments can affect many people.

Finally, the passage reminds readers that God’s purposes continue even when human beings make imperfect decisions. The story of Jacob and Esau contains deception, favoritism, conflict, and family pain, yet the larger biblical narrative continues to describe God’s covenant purposes through their descendants.
