Jeremiah Chapter 1
Jeremiah 1:1
Verse: The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah of the priests that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin
English Explanation: This introductory verse establishes the historical and personal identity of the prophet. Jeremiah was born into a priestly lineage, specifically the son of Hilkiah. His hometown was Anathoth, a priestly city located a few miles northeast of Jerusalem within the tribal territory of Benjamin. This background is significant because it highlights that Jeremiah was intimately familiar with religious laws and traditions, yet God called him out of standard priestly duties to perform the radical role of a prophet.
Jeremiah 1:2
Verse: To whom the word of the LORD came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah in the thirteenth year of his reign
English Explanation: This verse marks the precise beginning of Jeremiah’s prophetic ministry, dated to 627 BC. This was the thirteenth year of the reign of King Josiah, a righteous king who initiated major religious reforms in Judah. Despite Josiah’s efforts to cleanse the land of idolatry, the hearts of the people had not genuinely changed, setting the stage for Jeremiah’s challenging message of repentance.
Jeremiah 1:3
Verse: It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah unto the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah king of Judah unto the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month
English Explanation: This verse traces the timeline of Jeremiah’s long and turbulent ministry, spanning over 40 years. It continued through the reigns of successive kings, including Jehoiakim and ending with the eleventh year of King Zedekiah. The climax of this period was the catastrophic fall of Jerusalem and the deportation of its people into Babylonian captivity in the fifth month of 586 BC, a tragic event that Jeremiah repeatedly warned about.
Jeremiah 1:4
Verse: Then the word of the LORD came unto me saying
English Explanation: Jeremiah shifts into a personal first-person narrative. He emphasizes that his message is not self-generated, nor is it based on human philosophy. The divine phrasing stresses that the message originates directly from Yahweh, validating his authority as an authentic messenger of God.
Jeremiah 1:5
Verse: Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations
English Explanation: One of the most profound theological declarations of divine sovereignty and purpose. God reveals to Jeremiah that before his physical conception, God had an intimate knowledge of him and a specific blueprint for his life. He was set apart (sanctified) and appointed (ordained) to be a prophet not just for Judah, but to the surrounding nations. This highlights that our identity and calling are rooted in God’s eternal plan.
Jeremiah 1:6
Verse: Then said I Ah Lord GOD! behold I cannot speak for I am a child
English Explanation: Faced with the magnitude of this heavy calling, Jeremiah reacts with humility and fear. He points out his perceived limitations—his lack of eloquence and his youth (the Hebrew word used often implies a young man of unproven experience). Like Moses before him, Jeremiah looks at his own human weakness instead of God’s infinite power.
Jeremiah 1:7
Verse: But the LORD said unto me Say not I am a child for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak
English Explanation: God immediately corrects Jeremiah’s self-doubt. God commands him to stop identifying by his limitations (“Say not, I am a child”). The validity of a prophet does not rely on age or personal eloquence, but on total obedience to go where God sends and speak exactly what God commands. God’s authority overrides human inadequacy.
Jeremiah 1:8
Verse: Be not afraid of their faces for I am with thee to deliver thee saith the LORD
English Explanation: God anticipates the intense opposition and fierce rejection Jeremiah will face from kings, priests, and the public. He gives him a direct command: do not be intimidated by their hostile looks or threats. The antidote to fear is the divine promise: “I am with thee.” God does not promise an easy life, but He promises ultimate rescue and deliverance.
Jeremiah 1:9
Verse: Then the LORD put forth his hand and touched my mouth And the LORD said unto me Behold I have put my words in thy mouth
English Explanation: This is a physical, prophetic act of empowerment. God touches Jeremiah’s mouth, symbolically transferring divine authority and messages directly to him. Jeremiah is no longer speaking his own thoughts or opinions; his mouth becomes the vessel for the very words of God, ensuring the absolute truth and power of his prophecies.
Jeremiah 1:10
Verse: See I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms to root out and to pull down and to destroy and to throw down to build and to plant
English Explanation: God outlines the scope and nature of Jeremiah’s ministry. It is global (“over the nations”) and carries a dual purpose. Four negative actions—root out, pull down, destroy, throw down—symbolize the announcement of judgment upon sin and corrupt political systems. Two positive actions—build and plant—show that after judgment, God intends to restore, heal, and bring new life.
Jeremiah 1:11
Verse: Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me saying Jeremiah what seest thou? And I said I see a rod of an almond tree
English Explanation: God uses a visual object lesson to reinforce Jeremiah’s calling. He asks Jeremiah what he sees, and Jeremiah responds that he sees a branch or rod of an almond tree. In Israel, the almond tree is the first tree to blossom in the late winter/early spring, serving as a biological wake-up call for nature.
Jeremiah 1:12
Verse: Then said the LORD unto me Thou hast well seen for I will hasten my word to perform it
English Explanation: God plays on words here that are highly impactful in the original Hebrew. The word for almond tree is shaqed, which sounds exactly like the Hebrew word for watching or hastening, shoqed. God is telling Jeremiah that just as the almond tree actively “wakes up” early to bloom, God is actively watching over His prophetic words to fulfill them rapidly.
Jeremiah 1:13
Verse: And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time saying What seest thou? And I said I see a seething pot and the face thereof is toward the north
English Explanation: Jeremiah receives a second prophetic vision. He sees a boiling cauldron or pot, tilting from the north, spilling its scalding contents southward toward Judah. This vivid image symbolizes an impending, boiling-hot wave of destruction and military invasion that is about to overflow and submerge the land.
Jeremiah 1:14
Verse: Then the LORD said unto me Out of the north an evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land
English Explanation: God interprets the vision explicitly. The “north” was the traditional route through which invading empires (like Babylon) marched down into Israel because the direct eastern route was blocked by an impassable desert. The boiling pot represents a massive geopolitical disaster and calamity that God will release as judgment upon Judah.
Jeremiah 1:15
Verse: For lo I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north saith the LORD and they shall come and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem and against all the walls thereof round about and against all the cities of Judah
English Explanation: God proclaims that He is sovereignly summoning a coalition of northern kingdoms, led by Babylon. They will successfully invade the land, breach the defensive walls, and establish their military authority right at the gates of Jerusalem. Setting up a throne at the city gates represents absolute political dominance and judicial control over the defeated nation.
Jeremiah 1:16
Verse: And I will utter my judgments against them touching all their wickedness who have forsaken me and have burned incense unto other gods and worshipped the works of their own hands
English Explanation: God explains why this terrifying judgment is happening. It is not an act of random cosmic cruelty, but a direct consequence of Judah’s spiritual adultery and wickedness. They committed three fatal sins: they abandoned their relationship with Yahweh, they burned incense to pagan deities, and they committed idolatry by worshipping lifeless statues they made with their own hands.
Jeremiah 1:17
Verse: Thou therefore gird up thy loins and arise and speak unto them all that I command thee be not dismayed at their faces lest I confound thee before them
English Explanation: God issues an urgent call to action. To “gird up thy loins” means to tuck in one’s long robes to prepare for intense physical battle or hard labor—essentially, “get ready for work.” God warns Jeremiah that he must stay strong and fearless. If he lets himself be terrified by the people, God will allow him to be broken or humiliated in front of them. Courage is non-negotiable.
Jeremiah 1:18
Verse: For behold I have made thee this day a defenced city and an iron pillar and brasen walls against the whole land against the kings of Judah against the princes thereof against the priests thereof and against the people of the land
English Explanation: God promises to transform Jeremiah’s personal vulnerability into supernatural strength. He metaphorically turns the young prophet into an unshakeable fortress: a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls. Jeremiah will stand solid against the entire society—from the highest kings and ruling elites to the priests and common citizens.
Jeremiah 1:19
Verse: And they shall fight against thee but they shall not prevail against thee for I am with thee saith the LORD to deliver thee
English Explanation: The chapter closes with a highly realistic yet deeply comforting promise. God does not sugarcoat the reality; opposition is guaranteed (“they shall fight against thee”). However, defeat is impossible (“they shall not prevail”). The ultimate source of Jeremiah’s victory and security is the enduring presence of God, who guarantees his ongoing deliverance.
Jeremiah Chapter 2
Jeremiah 2:1
Verse: Moreover the word of the LORD came to me saying
English Explanation: As Chapter 2 begins, Jeremiah receives a fresh communication from God. This formal prophetic formula signals the transition into his very first public sermon delivered directly to the citizens of Jerusalem.
Jeremiah 2:2
Verse: Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem saying Thus saith the LORD I remember thee the kindness of thy youth the love of thine espousals when thou wentest after me in the wilderness in a land that was not sown
English Explanation: God uses powerful marital imagery to describe His historic relationship with Israel. He instructs Jeremiah to shout this message publicly. God looks back affectionately to Israel’s early history (the Exodus era), comparing it to a beautiful honeymoon phase where Israel was a devoted young bride, trusting God completely and following Him through a barren, uncultivated desert.
Jeremiah 2:3
Verse: Israel was holiness unto the LORD and the firstfruits of his increase all that devour him shall offend evil shall come upon them saith the LORD
English Explanation: In those early days, Israel was consecrated and set apart exclusively for Yahweh. God views Israel as the “firstfruits” of His harvest, which according to biblical law, was sacred and belonged entirely to God. Consequently, any enemy nations who tried to attack or “devour” Israel were guilty of sacrilege and faced divine judgment and disaster.
Jeremiah 2:4
Verse: Hear ye the word of the LORD O house of Jacob and all the families of the house of Israel
English Explanation: Jeremiah issues a solemn, universal call to attention. He addresses the entire community—every family lineage and tribe descended from Jacob. This broad address emphasizes that the message of corporate responsibility and spiritual evaluation applies to everyone without exception.
Jeremiah 2:5
Verse: Thus saith the LORD What iniquity have your fathers found in me that they are gone far from me and have walked after vanity and are become vain?
English Explanation: God brings a legal and emotional lawsuit against His people. He asks a heartbreaking question: “What fault did your ancestors find in Me to justify abandoning Me?” By walking after “vanity” (a word meaning breath, vapor, or worthless idols), the people themselves became empty and worthless. Idolatry reduces human dignity to the level of the worthless things being worshipped.
Jeremiah 2:6
Verse: Neither said they Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt that led us through the wilderness through a land of deserts and of pits through a land of drought and of the shadow of death through a land that no man passed through and where no man dwelt?
English Explanation: God exposes the people’s deep ingratitude and historical amnesia. They totally forgot to ask for the God who saved them from Egyptian slavery. God details the horrific terrain through which He safely guided them: a terrifying landscape filled with deserts, deep pits, scorching drought, and deadly dangers—a wasteland where no civilized human could survive without supernatural provision. Yet, the people took this spectacular salvation completely for granted.
