1. What does “sore displeased” mean?
The expression “sore displeased” means extremely displeased, deeply angry, or greatly offended. Modern translations commonly express the phrase as “very angry” or “extremely angry.”
The verse therefore communicates a serious spiritual warning. The LORD was not treating the sins of the previous generation as something insignificant. Their disobedience had brought serious consequences.
However, Zechariah 1:2 should not be separated from verses 3–6. The purpose of mentioning the previous generation was not simply to condemn the past. It was to warn the present generation not to repeat the same mistakes.
2. Who were “your fathers”?
“Your fathers” refers to the earlier generations of God’s people who had repeatedly turned away from the LORD and refused to listen to the prophetic warnings.
The next verse gives the solution:
“Turn ye unto me … and I will turn unto you.”
This is an important feature of the passage. Judgment is followed by an invitation to return. The message is therefore both a warning and a call to repentance.
The people were being reminded that their ancestors had received warnings from the prophets but had failed to respond appropriately. Zechariah’s generation was being given an opportunity to respond differently.
3. “Do not be like your fathers”
Zechariah 1:4 makes the central lesson especially clear:
“Be ye not as your fathers…”
The former prophets had called their ancestors to turn away from their evil ways and evil deeds, but they did not hear or listen to the LORD.

The new generation had to make its own decision.
They could continue in the same pattern of rebellion, or they could turn back to the LORD.
4. Sin has consequences
Zechariah 1:6 explains that the words and statutes spoken through the prophets eventually overtook the previous generation. The people later acknowledged that the LORD had dealt with them according to their ways and deeds.
This teaches an important biblical principle: human beings cannot permanently escape the consequences of persistent disobedience.
The passage emphasizes God’s justice. The LORD had warned the people beforehand. They were not without knowledge or opportunity. The prophets had repeatedly called them to change their ways.
Therefore, the judgment described in the passage came after repeated refusal to listen.
5. The message also contains hope
Although Zechariah 1:2 sounds severe, the next verse provides an important balance.
The LORD says:
“Turn ye unto me … and I will turn unto you.”

The LORD does not merely say, “Your fathers failed.” He says, in effect, do not follow their example; return to Me.

زکریاہ 1:2 میں لکھا ہے:
“The LORD hath been sore displeased with your fathers.”
اس کا مفہوم یہ ہے کہ خداوند تمہارے باپ دادا سے بہت ناراض تھا۔
یہاں “sore displeased” ایک بہت شدید ناراضی کی طرف اشارہ کرتا ہے۔ یعنی سابقہ نسل نے خداوند کی نافرمانی، گناہ اور اُس کے احکامات کو نظرانداز کیا، جس کی وجہ سے خداوند کی سخت ناراضی ان پر ظاہر ہوئی۔
