Genesis 27:31 is a powerful verse because it captures the moment when Esau returned from hunting expecting to receive his father’s blessing. The verse itself is simple, but its meaning becomes much clearer when it is read together with the surrounding verses.
Earlier in Genesis 27, Isaac was old and his eyesight had become very weak. He called Esau, his older son, and asked him to hunt for venison and prepare the kind of savory food that he loved. Isaac then intended to bless Esau before he died.
Esau obeyed his father and went hunting. Meanwhile, Rebekah heard Isaac’s instructions and told Jacob what had happened. She prepared food and helped Jacob present himself to Isaac as though he were Esau. Jacob was concerned that Isaac might discover the deception, but the plan succeeded. Isaac ate the food and gave Jacob the blessing intended for Esau.
Genesis 27:31 therefore describes Esau’s arrival immediately after Jacob had received the blessing. Esau had done what his father originally requested. He had hunted, prepared savory meat, and brought it to Isaac.
His words are especially important:
“Let my father arise, and eat of his son’s venison, that thy soul may bless me.”
Esau expected that his father would eat the food and then pronounce the blessing upon him. The wording closely reflects Isaac’s earlier instruction to Esau. Isaac had asked him to prepare food so that he could eat and bless him. Thus, Esau believed that everything was proceeding according to his father’s plan.
However, Esau did not know that Jacob had already come before Isaac and received the blessing.
The next verse reveals the shock of the situation. Isaac asks, “Who art thou?” Esau answers that he is Isaac’s firstborn, Esau. Isaac then realizes that something extraordinary has happened. He remembers that he had already eaten and had given his blessing to someone who had come before Esau.
The story then reaches an emotional climax. Esau cries bitterly and asks his father to bless him also. Isaac explains that Jacob had come deceptively and had taken the blessing.
Meaning of “savoury meat”
The phrase “savoury meat” refers to food prepared as a delicacy or a meal that was pleasing to Isaac’s taste. Modern translations often express the phrase as “delicious food,” “tasty food,” or “savory food.”
The food itself is important to the narrative because Isaac had specifically requested this meal before giving his blessing. Esau therefore believed that preparing the meal was part of the process through which he would receive his father’s blessing.
Meaning of “that thy soul may bless me”
The expression “that thy soul may bless me” is older English language. It does not mean that Esau wanted Isaac merely to say something nice about him. In the context of Genesis 27, Isaac’s blessing represented a serious paternal and covenantal pronouncement concerning the future of his family.
The surrounding passage shows that Isaac’s blessing included prosperity, authority, and a position of prominence. Isaac declared that nations and peoples would serve the one whom he blessed and that those who blessed him would themselves be blessed.
Therefore, Esau’s request was deeply significant. He was asking his father to give him the blessing he believed belonged to him as the firstborn.
Important Lessons from Genesis 27:31
1. Esau expected the blessing
Esau returned from hunting believing that he had fulfilled his father’s instructions. He had prepared the requested food and brought it to Isaac. From Esau’s perspective, he was now ready to receive the blessing.
This makes the following verses particularly painful. Esau discovers that the blessing has already been given.
2. The verse must be understood in its larger context
Genesis 27:31 should not be interpreted in isolation. The preceding verses explain Isaac’s request, Rebekah’s intervention, Jacob’s deception, and Isaac’s blessing of Jacob. The following verses explain Esau’s discovery and emotional reaction.
The entire chapter presents a complicated family conflict involving favoritism, deception, birthright, blessing, and the consequences of human decisions.
3. The story demonstrates the consequences of deception
Jacob received the blessing through deception. Although the biblical narrative records the event, recording an action is not necessarily the same thing as approving the action.
Jacob’s deception produced serious consequences. Esau became extremely angry and eventually contemplated killing his brother. Rebekah subsequently sent Jacob away for his protection.
The episode therefore illustrates how deception within a family can create lasting pain and division.
4. Esau’s response shows the emotional importance of the blessing
When Esau discovered what had happened, he cried with a great and bitter cry and pleaded for a blessing. His reaction shows how important Isaac’s blessing was to him.
