English Explanation
Genesis 27:35 is part of one of the most dramatic family stories in the Book of Genesis. The principal people in this account are Isaac, Rebekah, Esau, and Jacob.
Isaac was the father of twin sons, Esau and Jacob. Esau was the elder brother, while Jacob was the younger. In the ancient family setting, the firstborn had a particularly important position, and the father’s blessing could carry significant family, material, and covenantal significance.
As Isaac became old, he intended to bless Esau. Genesis 27 describes how Rebekah and Jacob devised a plan by which Jacob would appear to be Esau before his father. Because Isaac’s eyesight had become poor, Jacob was able to disguise himself and present himself as his older brother. Isaac eventually gave Jacob the blessing intended for Esau.
When Esau later came before Isaac expecting to receive the blessing, Isaac realized what had happened. Esau was devastated. Genesis 27:34 says that he cried with a “great and exceeding bitter cry.” He asked his father to bless him also.
Isaac’s response is the verse:
“Thy brother came with subtilty, and hath taken away thy blessing.”
What does “subtilty” mean?
The old English word “subtilty” in this passage means craftiness, deception, or guile. Modern translations commonly render the idea as “deceitfully,” “with deceit,” or “with guile.”
The Hebrew term translated “subtilty” is associated with fraud or deceit. Therefore, the verse is not simply saying that Jacob acted cleverly. In the immediate context, Isaac is recognizing that Jacob approached him through deception.
This distinction is important. The verse does not present deception as a virtue simply because Jacob ultimately received the blessing. Instead, the narrative openly records the deception and its painful consequences.
“Hath taken away thy blessing”
Esau understood the blessing as something that had been taken from him. His words in the following verse express his distress:
“Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me these two times…”
Esau connects two events: the earlier acquisition of his birthright and the later reception of Isaac’s blessing.
The passage therefore illustrates how one decision can affect an entire family. The deception did not produce a peaceful victory. Instead, it resulted in anger, grief, separation, and fear. Jacob eventually had to leave home because Esau’s anger became dangerous.
A deeper spiritual lesson
One of the strongest lessons from Genesis 27 is that God’s purposes and human wrongdoing should not be confused with each other.
The biblical narrative had already indicated that the younger son would have an important role in the family’s future. Yet the manner in which Jacob and Rebekah attempted to secure the blessing involved deception.
This gives the passage an important moral dimension: a person should not assume that because an outcome is ultimately part of God’s purpose, every method used to obtain that outcome is therefore right.
The story demonstrates that God can accomplish His purposes despite human weakness, but that does not make dishonesty harmless.
There is also a lesson about family favoritism. Earlier in Genesis, Isaac’s affection for Esau and Rebekah’s affection for Jacob contribute to division within the household. When parents show strong preference toward one child over another, rivalry can grow. Genesis 27 shows the painful consequences of such a divided family.
Isaac’s reaction is also significant
Isaac “trembled very exceedingly” when he realized what had happened. Yet immediately afterward he confirmed the blessing he had given Jacob, saying that Jacob “shall be blessed.”
This is significant because Isaac does not simply pretend that nothing happened. He recognizes that he has blessed Jacob and accepts the consequence of the blessing.
The passage therefore contains both human responsibility and divine providence. Jacob acted deceptively, Esau experienced genuine grief, Isaac had made a decision based on incomplete information, and yet the larger biblical story continued toward the fulfillment of God’s purposes.
What Genesis 27:35 teaches today
This verse can speak powerfully to modern life.
First, deception can have consequences beyond the immediate moment. A dishonest action may appear successful initially, but it can damage trust and relationships.
Second, family conflict can become extremely serious when favoritism, competition, and resentment are allowed to grow.
Third, we should not try to force a desired outcome through dishonest methods. Even when we strongly desire something good, the method matters.
Fourth, the chapter reminds readers that God’s purposes are not dependent upon human perfection. Jacob’s story does not end with his deception. His later life includes discipline, transformation, encounters with God, reconciliation, and a new identity.
Finally, the passage encourages humility. People can make serious mistakes while believing they are protecting their interests or securing their future. Genesis 27 encourages readers to trust God rather than manipulate circumstances through deception.
“And he said, Thy brother came with subtilty, and hath taken away thy blessing.” — Genesis 27:35 (KJV)
“Thy brother came with subtilty, and hath taken away thy blessing.”
