Jacob had left his homeland and traveled to the region where his mother’s family lived. There he met Laban, his mother’s brother. Laban had two daughters: Leah, the elder daughter, and Rachel, the younger daughter. The chapter describes Rachel as beautiful and well favored.
Jacob became deeply attached to Rachel. At that time, marriage arrangements could involve a bride-price or a period of service to the bride’s family. Jacob apparently did not have the material wealth to provide what was expected, so he offered something he did possess: his labor.
His proposal was remarkable:
“I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.”
Jacob was essentially saying that he was willing to devote seven years of his life to Laban because of his desire to marry Rachel.
2. “Jacob loved Rachel”
The central idea of the verse is love expressed through sacrifice and commitment.

The story becomes much more complicated after Jacob completes the seven years.
Jacob asks Laban to give him Rachel. Laban prepares a wedding feast, but after the wedding he gives Jacob Leah instead of Rachel. Jacob discovers the deception the following morning.
Laban then explains that in his country it was not customary to give the younger daughter before the firstborn. Laban agrees that Jacob can also marry Rachel, but Jacob must serve another seven years.
Thus, Jacob eventually spends fourteen years of service connected with Rachel.
This part of the narrative is particularly significant because Jacob himself had previously been involved in deception within his own family. The Genesis narrative repeatedly shows the consequences of human choices and the complicated circumstances through which God’s purposes continue.

Jacob had to wait seven years. Even then, circumstances did not unfold as he expected. His first wedding resulted in another seven years of service.
