English Explanation

Zechariah 2:2 is part of a prophetic vision in which the prophet sees a man with a measuring line in his hand. Zechariah asks him, “Whither goest thou?”—in modern English, “Where are you going?” The man answers that he is going to measure Jerusalem, specifically to determine its breadth and length.

At first glance, the action appears to be an ordinary surveying activity. A person measures a city to establish its dimensions, boundaries, or plans for construction. However, in the context of Zechariah’s prophetic vision, the measuring carries a deeper significance.

1. The measuring line represents purpose and order

The man is not wandering aimlessly. He has a measuring line and a specific assignment: to measure Jerusalem. Measurement suggests planning, definition, order, and preparation.

In biblical prophetic imagery, measuring can communicate the idea that something is being examined or prepared according to a particular purpose. Zechariah’s vision therefore directs attention toward God’s plan for Jerusalem rather than merely its physical dimensions.

The important point is that Jerusalem is not being forgotten. It is the object of deliberate attention.

2. “To measure Jerusalem”

Jerusalem occupies an important place throughout Scripture. In Zechariah’s time, the city had experienced devastation and hardship, and the prophet’s ministry brought a message of restoration and hope.

The measuring of Jerusalem therefore fits into the larger message of restoration. The following verses explain that Jerusalem would become so populated that it would extend beyond traditional walls. Zechariah 2:4 describes Jerusalem as inhabited “as towns without walls” because of the multitude of people and animals within it.

This makes the measuring line especially significant: the vision begins with an attempt to establish the city’s dimensions, but the subsequent message reveals that God’s blessing will be greater than ordinary human expectations.

3. “To see what is the breadth thereof”

Breadth means width. The man wants to establish how wide Jerusalem is.

This can be understood literally within the imagery of the vision, but the passage quickly moves beyond ordinary surveying. The emphasis is on a Jerusalem that will experience remarkable expansion.

The measurement therefore introduces an important biblical theme: God’s purposes can be larger than human calculations.

Human beings naturally think in terms of limits—boundaries, walls, measurements, resources, and available space. Zechariah’s vision begins with those familiar concepts but then points toward something greater.

4. “And what is the length thereof”

The second dimension is the city’s length. Together, length and breadth give a picture of the city’s extent.

The verse does not provide numerical measurements. That is important. The focus is not on calculating the exact size of Jerusalem from this vision. Instead, the measurement prepares the reader for the prophetic declaration that follows.

The vision teaches that God’s restoration should not be reduced to what people can immediately see or calculate.

5. The message of growth

The next part of the vision is essential for understanding verse 2. Zechariah 2:4 says that Jerusalem will be inhabited as towns without walls because of the multitude of people and cattle.

Thus, verse 2 should be read together with the verses that follow.

The measuring line suggests boundaries, but the prophecy emphasizes expansion. The city will become so full of inhabitants that conventional walls will no longer adequately describe its future condition.

This creates a powerful contrast:

  • Human measurement seeks to establish limits.
  • God’s promise points toward extraordinary growth.
  • Human security depends on walls.
  • God’s protection is presented as greater than physical walls.

In verse 5, God declares that He will be “a wall of fire round about” Jerusalem and that His glory will be in its midst.

6. A message of hope

Zechariah ministered during a period when God’s people needed encouragement concerning restoration. The vision assures them that Jerusalem’s future is not determined merely by its present condition.

This is one of the most encouraging principles in the passage: present circumstances do not necessarily reveal the full extent of God’s future purpose.

A city that had experienced destruction could be spoken of in terms of future abundance. A community that had suffered could be given a vision of restoration.

7. Spiritual application

For Christian readers, this verse can also encourage reflection on God’s work in the lives of His people. The measuring imagery reminds us that God works intentionally and purposefully.

People often measure their circumstances by what they currently possess: strength, resources, opportunities, influence, or visible success. Zechariah’s vision reminds us that God’s purposes are not restricted to the measurements human beings can see.

The passage also teaches that true security ultimately comes from God. The following declaration about God being a wall of fire around Jerusalem makes this especially clear.

Therefore, Zechariah 2:2 is not simply about a man measuring a city. It introduces a prophetic message concerning restoration, expansion, protection, divine presence, and hope.
