Verse-by-Verse Commentary (Jeremiah 25:13-38)
Jeremiah 25:13
Verse: And I will bring upon that land all my words which I have pronounced against it even all that is written in this book which Jeremiah hath prophesied against all the nations
-
English Explanation: God guarantees that His spoken judgments against Babylon and surrounding empires will come to pass. Prophetic words are not empty threats; they carry the absolute authority of divine decree. What is recorded in the scriptures is legally binding in the spiritual realm.
-
Jeremiah 25:14
Verse: For many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of them also and I will recompense them according to their deeds and according to the works of their own hands
-
English Explanation: The oppressors (specifically Babylon) who enslaved Israel will face poetic justice. God will raise up even stronger empires (the Medes and Persians) to subjugate them, proving that no earthly superpower is exempt from the law of divine retribution.
-
Jeremiah 25:15
Verse: For thus saith the LORD God of Israel unto me Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand and cause all the nations to whom I send thee to drink it
-
English Explanation: The “wine cup of fury” is a vivid biblical metaphor for God’s concentrated judgment. Jeremiah is symbolically instructed to deliver this message of impending doom to every political power of his era, showing that God is the Sovereign Judge of the entire world, not just Israel.
-
Jeremiah 25:16
Verse: And they shall drink and be moved and be mad because of the sword that I will send among them
-
English Explanation: The judgment will be so overwhelming that the nations will act like drunken, maddened individuals. The “sword” represents physical warfare, political destabilization, and psychological chaos sent as a consequence of their deep-rooted sins.
-
Jeremiah 25:17
Verse: Then took I the cup at the LORD’s hand and made all the nations to drink unto whom the LORD had sent me
-
English Explanation: Jeremiah faithfully executes his prophetic duty. Obediently, he delivers the hard, unpopular message of divine accountability to kingdoms that considered themselves untouchable.
-
Jeremiah 25:18
Verse: To wit Jerusalem and the cities of Judah and the kings thereof and the princes thereof to make them a desolation an astonishment an hissing and a curse as it is this day
-
English Explanation: Judgment explicitly begins at the House of God. Before addressing pagan empires, Jerusalem and Judah are held accountable because they possessed the Law yet chose rebellion. Their ruin serves as a historical warning to others.
-
Jeremiah 25:19
Verse: Pharaoh king of Egypt and his servants and his princes and all his people
-
English Explanation: Egypt, a major superpower and a frequent false source of security for Judah, is next in line for judgment. God shows that trusting in human military might instead of divine protection leads to absolute failure.
-
Jeremiah 25:20
Verse: And all the mingled people and all the kings of the land of Uz and all the kings of the land of the Philistines and Ashkelon and Azzah and Ekron and the remnant of Ashdod
-
English Explanation: This targets the diverse population groups, mercenaries, and the traditional Philistine city-states. No matter how fragmented or allied these minor powers were, none could hide from the sweeping reach of God’s sovereign hand.
-
Jeremiah 25:21
Verse: Edom and Moab and the children of Ammon
-
English Explanation: These three nations were blood-relatives of Israel (descendants of Esau and Lot) but constantly showed deep hostility toward God’s people. Family ties do not grant immunity from the consequences of hatred and pride.
-
Jeremiah 25:22
Verse: And all the kings of Tyrus and all the kings of Zidon and the kings of the isles which are beyond the sea
-
English Explanation: Tyre and Sidon were wealthy, maritime merchant empires. Their immense financial prosperity, strategic coastal positions, and naval dominance could not safeguard them against divine decree.
-
Jeremiah 25:23
Verse: Dedan and Tema and Buz and all that are in the utmost corners
-
English Explanation: This references the desert oasis kingdoms and distant Arabian tribes involved in major trade routes. Isolation and geographical distance provide zero defense against God’s judicial decree.
-
Jeremiah 25:24
Verse: And all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the mingled people that dwell in the desert
-
English Explanation: The nomadic tribes and mixed populations traversing the vast deserts are explicitly included. God’s authority extends past structured urban centers into the deepest wilderness.
-
Jeremiah 25:25
Verse: And all the kings of Zimri and all the kings of Elam and all the kings of the Medes
-
English Explanation: The focus shifts eastward toward Elam and Media (modern-day Iran). These rising regional powers, though destined to play a role in Babylon’s eventual fall, must also face their own eventual judgment.
-
Jeremiah 25:26
Verse: And all the kings of the north far and near one with another and all the kingdoms of the world which are upon the face of the earth and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them
-
English Explanation: “Sheshach” is a cryptogram (Atbash cipher) for Babylon. God reveals that while He uses Babylon as His tool of discipline against other nations, Babylon itself is not innocent and will ultimately face the worst destruction of all.
-
Jeremiah 25:27
Verse: Therefore thou shalt say unto them Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Drink ye and be drunken and spue and fall and rise no more because of the sword which I will send among you
-
English Explanation: The finality of this judgment is total. The spiritual intoxication of their arrogance will lead to a permanent economic and geopolitical collapse from which these specific systems will never recover.
-
Jeremiah 25:28
Verse: And it shall be if they refuse to take the cup at thine hand to drink then shalt thou say unto them Thus saith the LORD of hosts Ye shall certainly drink
-
English Explanation: Submission to God’s judgment is not optional. Nations cannot self-remedy, negotiate, or opt out of divine consequences once the cup of moral failure is completely full.
-
Jeremiah 25:29
Verse: For lo I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name and should ye be utterly unpunished Ye shall not be unpunished for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth saith the LORD of hosts
-
English Explanation: If God does not spare Jerusalem—the very city bearing His Holy Name—He will certainly not spare pagan nations. Divine justice operates without partiality or favoritism.
-
Jeremiah 25:30
Verse: Therefore prophesy thou against them all these words and say unto them The LORD shall roar from on high and utter his voice from his holy habitation he shall mightily roar upon his habitation he shall give a shout as they that tread the grapes against all the inhabitants of the earth
-
English Explanation: God is depicted as a roaring lion and a fierce treader of grapes. The crushing of grapes symbolizes the absolute crushing of human rebellion under the weight of divine righteousness.
-
Jeremiah 25:31
Verse: A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth for the LORD hath a controversy with the nations he will plead with all flesh he will give them that are wicked to the sword saith the LORD
-
English Explanation: God has a legal lawsuit (“controversy”) against humanity due to widespread wickedness. This is a global indictment where the ultimate verdict is the execution of justice against unrepentant evil.
-
Jeremiah 25:32
Verse: Thus saith the LORD of hosts Behold evil shall go forth from nation to nation and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth
-
English Explanation: Like a contagious disease or a sweeping wildfire, destruction will spread rapidly from one kingdom to another. The “whirlwind” indicates a sudden, unstoppable geopolitical restructuring via conflict.
-
Jeremiah 25:33
Verse: And the slain of the LORD shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth they shall not be lamented neither gathered nor buried they shall be dung upon the ground
-
English Explanation: The scale of casualties will be so immense that traditional societal rituals like mourning and burials will become impossible. Leaving bodies unburied was considered the ultimate shame and curse in the ancient world.
-
Jeremiah 25:34
Verse: Howl ye shepherds and cry and wallow yourselves in the ashes ye principal of the flock for the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are accomplished and ye shall fall like a pleasant vessel
-
English Explanation: “Shepherds” and “principal of the flock” refer directly to political, military, and religious leaders. Their elite status will not save them; they will break easily, just like an expensive, fragile clay vessel dropped on the floor.
-
Jeremiah 25:35
Verse: And the shepherds shall have no way to flee nor the principal of the flock to escape
-
Explanation: Wealth, power, and high social status provide absolutely zero leverage or escape routes when divine judgment is executed. True accountability levels all human social hierarchies.
-
Jeremiah 25:36
Verse: A voice of the cry of the shepherds and an howling of the principal of the flock shall be heard for the LORD hath spoiled their pasture
-
English Explanation: The agonizing cries of the ruling class echo out because their source of wealth, power, and exploitation (“their pasture”) has been utterly dismantled by the Lord.
-
Jeremiah 25:37
Verse: And the peaceable habitations are cut down because of the fierce anger of the LORD
-
English Explanation: Even places that once enjoyed peace, stability, and false security are brought to ruin. No false peace can endure when it is built upon a foundation of injustice and systemic sin.
-
Jeremiah 25:38
Verse: He hath forsaken his covert as the lion for their land is desolate because of the fierceness of the oppressor and because of his fierce anger
-
English Explanation: God leaves His quiet sanctuary like a lion stepping out of its lair to hunt. The total desolation of the land is the physical manifestation of divine wrath colliding with unrepentant human arrogance.
-
