English Explanation
Genesis 29:24 is part of the account of Jacob, Leah, and Rachel. Jacob had traveled to the household of Laban and desired to marry Rachel, Laban’s younger daughter. Jacob agreed to serve Laban for seven years in order to marry Rachel. However, Laban deceived Jacob and gave him Leah instead.
After Jacob discovered the deception, another arrangement was made concerning Rachel. Laban eventually gave Rachel to Jacob as well, after Jacob agreed to serve an additional period.
Within this family setting, Laban gave Zilpah to his daughter Leah as a maid or female servant. The verse is brief, but it is important because Zilpah later becomes part of the larger family story.
The biblical text identifies Zilpah specifically as Leah’s maid. In the household structure described in Genesis, servants could have important responsibilities within the family. Zilpah’s role becomes especially significant in Genesis 30, when Leah gives Zilpah to Jacob as a secondary wife or concubine in response to the family circumstances surrounding childbearing.
Genesis 30:9 says that when Leah saw that she had stopped bearing children, she gave Zilpah to Jacob. Zilpah subsequently bore Jacob two sons: Gad and Asher. These sons became ancestors associated with two of the tribes of Israel.
Therefore, Genesis 29:24 is not an isolated statement. It introduces Zilpah into the household of Leah, and her later role helps explain part of Jacob’s growing family.
The passage also belongs to a larger narrative concerning Jacob’s complicated family relationships. Jacob had two principal wives, Leah and Rachel, and children were also born through their servants, Zilpah and Bilhah. Genesis records these events as part of the history of Jacob’s family and the development of the twelve tribes.
From a historical and literary perspective, the verse demonstrates how a single short statement can introduce a person whose importance becomes clearer several chapters later. Zilpah receives only a brief introduction here, but Genesis later records her motherhood and the names of her sons.
It is also important to distinguish between what the verse says and later interpretation. Genesis 29:24 simply states that Laban gave Zilpah to Leah as a handmaid. The verse itself does not provide a lengthy explanation of Zilpah’s background, age, nationality, or personal thoughts. Readers should therefore avoid presenting speculation as though it were directly stated by Scripture.
The surrounding story also emphasizes the consequences of human decisions and family arrangements. Jacob had entered Laban’s household expecting to marry Rachel, but Laban’s deception resulted in Jacob marrying Leah first. The resulting relationships produced jealousy, competition, hardship, and eventually a large family.
For readers studying the Bible, Genesis 29:24 is especially useful when read together with Genesis 30:9–13, because those verses explain how Zilpah later became the mother of Gad and Asher.
The passage can therefore be understood on several levels: historically, it records an element of Jacob’s household; narratively, it introduces Zilpah; genealogically, it connects to the birth of two later tribal ancestors; and spiritually, it forms part of the broader biblical record showing how God worked through a complicated human family history.
“And Laban gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for an handmaid.”
