English Explanation of Genesis 29:31
“When the LORD saw that Leah was hated”
The first important phrase is “the LORD saw.” The verse emphasizes God’s awareness of Leah’s condition. Other people might have concentrated on Jacob and Rachel, but God noticed Leah.
The word “hated” in this passage should be understood carefully. In the biblical context, it does not necessarily mean that Jacob felt absolute hatred toward Leah in the modern sense. The surrounding verses explain that Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah. Therefore, the expression communicates that Leah was less loved, rejected, or comparatively unloved.
This distinction is important because the following chapter shows Leah desperately hoping that bearing children would cause Jacob to love her. Her children became closely connected with her longing for acceptance.
The verse therefore describes emotional pain within a complicated family relationship.
“He opened her womb”
The expression “opened her womb” means that God enabled Leah to conceive children.
In the biblical worldview, childbirth was understood as something ultimately under God’s sovereignty. Leah’s ability to have children was not presented merely as a biological event; the writer specifically connects it with God’s action.
This does not mean that every person who experiences infertility or fertility difficulties should conclude that God is punishing them or favoring someone else. Genesis presents a particular historical situation and emphasizes God’s personal involvement in Leah’s story.
The important message is that God was aware of Leah’s suffering and did not overlook her.
“But Rachel was barren”
The final part of the verse creates a striking contrast. Rachel, the woman Jacob loved more, was unable to have children.
This contrast shows that love, social status, and personal circumstances do not guarantee that life will unfold according to human expectations.
Rachel’s barrenness also became a significant part of the larger biblical story. Her struggle would continue, and eventually she would have children. Genesis therefore presents both women’s experiences over time rather than reducing either woman to a single moment.
What Does Genesis 29:31 Teach Us?
1. God sees people who feel overlooked
Leah’s story can encourage anyone who feels forgotten, rejected, or less valued than another person. The verse does not say that Leah was invisible. On the contrary, God saw her.
Human beings may compare us with others, overlook us, or fail to appreciate us, but our worth is not determined by another person’s affection.
2. Human rejection does not define our value
Jacob’s preference for Rachel affected Leah deeply, but it did not determine her worth before God.
This is one of the most encouraging themes in the passage. A person’s value does not depend entirely on whether another human being chooses, praises, loves, or accepts them.
3. God’s timing can be different from human expectations
Leah became able to have children while Rachel remained barren. Later, Rachel’s story changed as well.
The passage reminds readers that circumstances can change and that God’s purposes may unfold gradually. We should therefore be careful about judging an entire life from one difficult season.
4. Comparison can create unnecessary pain
Leah and Rachel were placed in a situation where comparison was unavoidable. One was loved more, while the other initially had children.
Their story demonstrates how painful comparison can become when people’s identities are tied to what someone else has.
Instead of measuring our lives against another person’s circumstances, the biblical narrative encourages trust in God’s individual purposes.
“And when the LORD saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren.”
“The LORD saw” — God
“Leah was hated” —
“He opened her womb” — God
“But Rachel was barren” —
