Historical and Biblical Context
Jacob was the son of Isaac and the grandson of Abraham. At this point in Genesis, Jacob was traveling toward Haran. He had left his home and was on a journey that would profoundly shape the rest of his life.
The previous verses explain that Jacob stopped at a certain place because the sun had gone down. He took one of the stones of that place and used it as a support for his head while he slept. In his dream, Jacob saw a ladder or stairway standing upon the earth with its top reaching toward heaven. Angels of God were moving upon it.
God then spoke to Jacob and promised that the land on which he was lying would be given to him and his descendants. God also promised that Jacob’s descendants would become numerous and that through his family blessing would extend to the nations of the earth. God further assured Jacob that He would be with him, protect him, and bring him back safely.
When Jacob woke, he understood that something extraordinary had happened.
Genesis 28:18 records his immediate response.
“Jacob Rose Up Early in the Morning”
The verse begins with Jacob rising early in the morning. His response shows that the experience of the previous night had deeply affected him.
Jacob did not simply forget the dream and continue his journey as though nothing had happened. He acted upon what he had experienced. His first actions of the morning were connected with remembering and honoring the encounter.
This can remind readers that meaningful spiritual experiences should not be treated casually. When a person recognizes God’s guidance, promises, or blessings in life, remembering them can strengthen faith during difficult times.
“Took the Stone That He Had Put for His Pillows”
The stone was an ordinary object. Jacob had used it because he needed something to rest his head upon during the night.
Yet after his encounter with God, the same stone became a reminder of what had happened.
This is an important feature of the passage. The stone itself did not possess supernatural power. Its significance came from what it represented: Jacob’s encounter with God at that location.
The ordinary became a memorial.

“Set It Up for a Pillar”
Jacob then set the stone upright as a pillar.
In the biblical world, pillars could serve as memorials. They could mark significant events, locations, agreements, or encounters. By setting up the stone, Jacob was establishing a visible reminder of what had happened.
The pillar communicated memory.
Jacob would be able to look back at this place and remember the night when God spoke to him and confirmed the covenant promises.

The final action in the verse is Jacob pouring oil upon the top of the stone.

The pouring of oil demonstrated that this was no longer merely an ordinary stone in Jacob’s mind. It had become associated with a sacred memory.
