English Explanation

Genesis 29:33 describes the birth of Simeon, the second son born to Leah, the wife of Jacob. This verse is part of a larger account in which Leah experiences emotional pain because she does not receive the love and affection from Jacob that she desires. Nevertheless, the verse emphasizes an important spiritual truth: God hears the cries and suffering of those who feel rejected, overlooked, or unloved.

The verse begins with the words, “And she conceived again, and bare a son.” Leah had already given birth to Reuben, her first son. Now she gives birth to another son. In the biblical narrative, the birth of a child was a significant blessing, but for Leah, the circumstances surrounding these births were deeply connected with her desire to be loved by her husband.

Leah then says, “Because the LORD hath heard that I was hated.” The word “hated” in this passage should be understood within the context of Jacob’s relationship with Leah and Rachel. Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah. The language expresses Leah’s experience of being less loved and less valued. She was living in a painful family situation in which she knew that another woman had Jacob’s greater affection.

Yet Leah recognizes that God had heard her.

This is one of the most comforting aspects of the verse. Leah may have felt that Jacob did not truly understand her pain, but she believed that God did. Her circumstances had not gone unnoticed by God. Her sorrow was not hidden from Him.

The statement “he hath therefore given me this son also” shows Leah’s understanding of the birth of Simeon as another gift from God. She sees her child as evidence that God has heard her distress. Although the birth of Simeon does not immediately solve the emotional difficulties within her household, it reminds her that God’s attention is not limited by the failures or limitations of human relationships.

The final part of the verse says, “and she called his name Simeon.” The name Simeon is associated with the Hebrew idea of hearing or being heard. Leah gives her son a name that preserves the memory of what she believes God has done for her. His name becomes a reminder that God heard her suffering.

There is an important lesson here for anyone who has experienced rejection. Human beings sometimes fail to recognize another person’s pain. A person may be surrounded by people and still feel lonely. Someone may be overlooked in a family, workplace, friendship, or community. Genesis 29:33 presents Leah as someone whose emotional suffering was seen and heard by God.

The verse does not say that Leah’s circumstances became perfect. Instead, it shows that God was present and attentive in the middle of her difficult circumstances. This distinction is important. Faith does not always mean that every painful situation immediately changes. Sometimes the first encouragement is knowing that God hears.

Leah’s story also teaches us about the importance of remembering God’s kindness. She named her son Simeon so that his very name would carry a testimony of being heard. In this way, a difficult period in her life became connected with a lasting reminder of God’s care.

Genesis 29:33 can therefore be understood as a message of hope: rejection by people does not mean rejection by God. A person may feel forgotten by others, but God knows the heart and sees circumstances that other people cannot see.

The verse also encourages compassion. Leah’s experience reminds readers not to judge people only by their outward circumstances. Behind someone’s behavior may be years of disappointment, loneliness, or a desire to be valued. The biblical account invites us to respond to hurting people with understanding rather than indifference.

Most importantly, the verse directs attention toward God’s character. He is presented as the One who hears. Leah’s experience becomes a testimony that God is aware of human sorrow. The name Simeon continues that testimony within the biblical story.

“And she conceived again, and bare a son”

“Because the LORD hath heard that I was hated”

“he hath therefore given me this son also”

“and she called his name Simeon.”
