Detailed English Explanation

“Now therefore swear unto me here by God”

Abimelech begins by asking Abraham to make a serious and binding promise. The reference to God shows that this was not intended to be a casual agreement. Calling upon God gave the promise a solemn character.

A promise made before God should be treated seriously. The verse therefore reminds us that our words have moral significance. When we give our word, especially when another person is depending upon it, honesty and faithfulness should guide our actions.

The passage also shows that relationships between people can involve accountability before God. Human beings may forget their promises, but God is not indifferent to truthfulness and integrity.

“That thou wilt not deal falsely with me”

The expression “deal falsely” refers to acting deceitfully, dishonestly, or treacherously. Abimelech wanted assurance that Abraham would not turn against him after receiving kindness and protection in the land.

This teaches a powerful lesson about integrity. A person should not accept kindness from someone and later respond with deception or betrayal.

True character is demonstrated not only by how we behave when we need someone, but also by how we treat that person after our situation improves.

The verse therefore encourages people to maintain honesty even when circumstances change.

“Nor with my son, nor with my son’s son”

Abimelech did not limit his request to his own lifetime. He wanted Abraham to promise peaceful treatment toward his children and grandchildren as well.

This is significant because our decisions can affect people who come after us. Peace or conflict can continue from one generation to another. A wise person therefore considers the future consequences of present actions.

The phrase also emphasizes the importance of maintaining honorable relationships across generations. Abraham was being asked to establish a relationship based on trust that could continue beyond the immediate circumstances.

“But according to the kindness that I have done unto thee”

Abimelech appealed to the kindness he had previously shown Abraham. He essentially asked Abraham to respond with corresponding goodwill.

Kindness creates an environment in which trust can grow. When someone treats us generously, we should not take advantage of that generosity. Instead, gratitude should influence our conduct.

This does not mean that every human relationship must be based on an exact exchange of favors. Rather, the broader principle is that kindness should encourage kindness, and generosity should not be answered with betrayal.

“Thou shalt do unto me”

Abimelech was asking Abraham to demonstrate his commitment through future behavior, not merely words.

This is an important biblical principle: genuine promises are demonstrated by actions. Saying that we value peace is one thing; actually behaving peacefully is another.

The verse encourages consistency between our words and our actions. If we make a promise, our conduct should support what we have promised.

“And to the land wherein thou hast sojourned”

Abimelech’s request extended beyond himself and his family to the land where Abraham had been living as a sojourner.

Abraham was not the permanent ruler of that territory. He was living there as a resident or traveler. Nevertheless, his actions could influence the peace and stability of the surrounding community.

This gives the verse a broader social lesson. People should consider the communities in which they live. Peaceful living requires respect for neighbors, families, communities, and future generations.

Main Spiritual Lessons

Genesis 21:23 presents several important lessons:

  • Keep your promises. A person’s word should be trustworthy.
  • Do not repay kindness with deception. Good treatment should encourage honorable conduct.
  • Value peace. Abraham was asked to maintain peaceful relations rather than create unnecessary conflict.
  • Consider future generations. Our actions can influence our children and grandchildren.
  • Live with integrity. Faith should be reflected in practical behavior.
  • Respect the community around you. Our responsibilities can extend beyond our immediate personal relationships.
  • Remember accountability before God. A solemn promise should not be treated lightly.

The verse ultimately presents a picture of two parties seeking security and peaceful coexistence. Abimelech recognized God’s presence with Abraham, and he wanted that relationship to be accompanied by honesty and goodwill.

“Deal falsely”
