Verse-by-Verse Commentary (Jeremiah 39:15 – 40:15)
Jeremiah 39:15
Verse: Now the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah while he was shut up in the court of the prison saying
-
English Explanation: This verse flashes back to the time before Jerusalem fell, while Jeremiah was still imprisoned by King Zedekiah. It establishes that even in physical confinement, the word of God cannot be chained. God still spoke to His prophet to provide a message of hope for a faithful individual.
-
Jeremiah 39:16
Verse: Go and speak to Ebed-melech the Ethiopian saying Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Behold I will bring my words upon this city for evil and not for good and they shall be accomplished in that day before thee
-
English Explanation: God directs Jeremiah to deliver a personal message to Ebed-melech, an Ethiopian eunuch who had rescued Jeremiah from a muddy cistern. God reaffirms that His judgment upon Jerusalem is absolute and will happen right before Ebed-melech’s eyes, proving God’s words are true.
-
Jeremiah 39:17
Verse: But I will deliver thee in that day saith the LORD and thou shalt not be given into the hand of the men of whom thou art afraid
-
English Explanation: Amidst national destruction, God promises personal safety to Ebed-melech. He was terrified of the Judean princes who sought Jeremiah’s death, but God reassures him that he will be divinely protected from his enemies because of his kindness.
-
Jeremiah 39:18
Verse: For I will surely deliver thee and thou shalt not fall by the sword but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee because thou hast put thy trust in me saith the LORD
-
English Explanation: The ultimate reason for Ebed-melech’s salvation is revealed: his faith and trust in Yahweh. While the elite of Judah fell by the sword because of rebellion, a foreign servant survived because he trusted God. Surviving with his life is compared to escaping with a “prey” or prize.
-
Chapter 40
Jeremiah 40:1
Verse: The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD after that Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah when he had taken him being bound in chains among all that were carried away captive of Jerusalem and Judah which were carried away captive unto Babylon
-
English Explanation: Chapter 40 shifts to the aftermath of Jerusalem’s fall. Jeremiah had been accidentally rounded up in chains with other captives at Ramah (a staging camp for exile). Nebuzar-adan, the Babylonian commander, recognizes Jeremiah and sets him free, initiating a new series of revelations.
-
Jeremiah 40:2
Verse: And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah and said unto him The LORD thy God hath pronounced this evil upon this place
-
English Explanation: In a fascinating turn, a pagan Babylonian captain preaches the truth to Jeremiah. Nebuzar-adan acknowledges that the catastrophe which befell Jerusalem was not merely the work of military might, but the fulfillment of the judgment pronounced by Yahweh, Jeremiah’s God.
-
Jeremiah 40:3
Verse: Now the LORD hath brought it and done according as he hath said because ye have sinned against the LORD and have not obeyed his voice therefore this thing is come upon you
-
English Explanation: Nebuzar-adan clearly defines the theology of the exile: Israel’s sin caused their ruin. He summarizes the core message that Jeremiah had preached for 40 years, highlighting the irony that a pagan general understood Judah’s spiritual rebellion better than the Judeans themselves.
-
Jeremiah 40:4
Verse: And now behold I loose thee this day from the chains which were upon thine hand If it seem good unto thee to come with me into Babylon come and I will look well unto thee but if it seem ill unto thee to come with me into Babylon forbear behold all the land is before thee whither it seemeth good and convenient for thee to go thither go
-
English Explanation: Jeremiah is given complete freedom and a choice. He can go to Babylon as an honored guest under royal protection, or he can remain in Judah. This honors the prophet’s integrity and demonstrates God’s favor toward him through his former enemies.
-
Jeremiah 40:5
Verse: Now while he was not yet gone back he said Go back also to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah and dwell with him among the people or go wheresoever it seemeth convenient unto thee to go So the captain of the guard gave him victuals and a reward and let him go
-
English Explanation: Seeing Jeremiah hesitate, Nebuzar-adan suggests he return to Gedaliah, the newly appointed puppet governor of Judah, to help stabilize the remaining poor populace. The commander treats Jeremiah with immense respect, providing him with provisions (food) and a parting gift.
-
Jeremiah 40:6
Verse: Then went Jeremiah unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land
-
English Explanation: Jeremiah chooses to stay with his suffering brethren rather than live in comfort in Babylon. He moves to Mizpah, the temporary administrative center, aligning his destiny with the poor remnant left to till the soil.
-
Jeremiah 40:7
Verse: Now when all the captains of the forces which were in the fields even they and their men heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land and had committed unto him men and women and children and of the poor of the land of them that were not carried away captive to Babylon
-
English Explanation: Jewish military captains and guerrilla fighters who had hidden in the countryside during the siege hear that Babylon has established a local government under Gedaliah. They learn that the land is being re-populated with the poorest refugees who weren’t exiled.
-
Jeremiah 40:8
Verse: Then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite and Jezaniah the son of a Maachathite they and their men
-
English Explanation: These scattered military leaders emerge from hiding to pledge alliance or negotiate terms with Gedaliah at Mizpah. Notable among them are Johanan (who becomes a loyal defender) and Ishmael (who harbors sinister royal ambitions).
-
Jeremiah 40:9
Verse: And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan sware unto them and to their men saying Fear not to serve the Chaldeans dwell in the land and serve the king of Babylon and it shall be well with you
-
English Explanation: Gedaliah takes an oath to ease their anxieties. He echoes Jeremiah’s long-standing prophetic advice: submit to Babylonian rule, cooperate with the occupiers, and you will live in peace and safety. Resistance is futile; submission brings restoration.
-
Jeremiah 40:10
Verse: As for me behold I will dwell at Mizpah to serve the Chaldeans which will come unto us but ye gather ye wine and summer fruits and oil and put them in your vessels and dwell in your cities that ye have taken
-
English Explanation: Gedaliah establishes his role as a mediator who will handle the Babylonian officials. He urges the soldiers and people to return to agricultural life—harvesting grapes, fruits, and olives to rebuild the ruined economy and secure their survival.
-
Jeremiah 40:11
Verse: Likewise when all the Jews that were in Moab and among the Ammonites and in Edom and that were in all the countries heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan
-
English Explanation: News of the stable puppet government spreads to neighboring nations (Moab, Ammon, Edom) where many Judean refugees had fled during the war. Hearing that a trusted countryman like Gedaliah is in charge sparks hope.
-
Jeremiah 40:12
Verse: Even all the Jews returned out of all places whither they were driven and came to the land of Judah to Gedaliah unto Mizpah and gathered wine and summer fruits very much
-
English Explanation: A mini-restoration occurs as refugees flood back to Judah. Under Gedaliah’s brief but prosperous leadership, they experience a massive, successful harvest, showing that God was ready to bless the land if they remained compliant.
-
Jeremiah 40:13
Verse: Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces that were in the fields came to Gedaliah to Mizpah
-
English Explanation: The political peace is short-lived. Johanan and other field commanders uncover a political conspiracy and return to Mizpah to urgently warn Governor Gedaliah about an impending threat to his life.
-
Jeremiah 40:14
Verse: And said unto him Dost thou certainly know that Baalis the king of the Ammonites hath sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to slay thee But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam believed them not
-
English Explanation: Johanan reveals that King Baalis of Ammon has hired Ishmael (who was of Judean royal blood and jealous of Gedaliah) to assassinate the governor. Tragically, Gedaliah is overly trusting, naive, and refuses to believe the warning, setting the stage for disaster.
-
Jeremiah 40:15
Verse: Then Johanan the son of Kareah spake to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly saying Let me go I pray thee and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and no man shall know it wherefore should he slay thee that all the Jews which are gathered unto thee should be scattered and the remnant in Judah perish
-
English Explanation: In a private meeting, Johanan begs for permission to launch a preemptive strike to assassinate Ishmael secretly. Johanan wisely points out that Gedaliah’s death would collapse the fragile colony, scatter the remaining Jews, and completely destroy the last remnant of Judah.
-
