jeremiah Chapter یرمیاہ باب 46

Chapter 45

Jeremiah 45:1

Verse: The word that Jeremiah the prophet spake unto Baruch the son of Neriah when he had written these words in a book at the mouth of Jeremiah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah saying

English Explanation: This verse sets the historical and personal context for the entire chapter. It takes place in the fourth year of King Jehoiakim’s reign (around 605 BC), a pivotal turning point when Babylon defeated Egypt at Carchemish, establishing itself as the dominant world power. Baruch, Jeremiah’s faithful scribe and secretary, had just finished writing down all of Jeremiah’s prophecies of warning and judgment onto a scroll. Recording these grim prophecies took a heavy emotional toll on Baruch, prompting this specific, comforting, yet corrective word from God directly to him.

Jeremiah 45:2

Verse: Thus saith the LORD the God of Israel unto thee O Baruch

English Explanation: Here, God addresses Baruch by his personal name. In a time of massive geopolitical shifting and national judgment, the Creator of the universe takes notice of an individual’s sorrow. By identifying Himself as “the God of Israel,” Yahweh reminds Baruch of His covenant relationship with His people, emphasizing that even in judgment, He is intimately aware of the pain felt by His faithful servants.

Jeremiah 45:3

Verse: Thou didst say Woe is me now! for the LORD hath added grief to my sorrow I fainted in my sighing and I find no rest

English Explanation: This verse exposes Baruch’s internal crisis. He felt completely overwhelmed, crying out that God had multiplied his misery. Not only was he sharing the sorrow of his nation’s imminent collapse, but as Jeremiah’s scribe, he faced social ostracism, persecution, and danger. He felt physically and emotionally exhausted (“fainted in my sighing”) and could find no peace or mental rest.

Jeremiah 45:4

Verse: Thus shalt thou say unto him The LORD saith thus Behold that which I have built will I break down and that which I have planted I will pluck up even this whole land

English Explanation: God responds to Baruch by widening his perspective. Using agricultural and construction metaphors common in Jeremiah, God explains that He is about to tear down the very nation He built and root up what He planted. God is telling Baruch that the sorrow is not just Baruch’s; God Himself is experiencing the painful necessity of destroying His own beloved nation due to their persistent wickedness.

Jeremiah 45:5

Verse: And seekest thou great things for thyself? seek them not for behold I will bring evil upon all flesh saith the LORD but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou goest

English Explanation: God gently but directly rebukes Baruch’s personal ambitions. Perhaps Baruch, being from a noble family, expected honor, safety, or prosperity. God tells him that during a time of universal judgment (“evil upon all flesh”), chasing personal career goals or security is foolish. Instead, God offers a grander promise: wherever Baruch goes, his life will be spared and given to him “as a prey” (meaning he will escape with his bare life as his only prize). Survival itself would be God’s miraculous gift to him.

Chapter 46

Jeremiah 46:1

Verse: The word of the LORD which came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Gentiles

English Explanation: This verse serves as the introduction to a brand new section of the Book of Jeremiah (Chapters 46 to 51), which consists of prophecies directed against the foreign, Gentile nations surrounding Judah. It demonstrates that Yahweh is not just a local deity of Israel, but the Sovereign Sovereign ruler over all the empires of the earth, holding every global superpower accountable to His standards of justice.

Jeremiah 46:2

Verse: Against Egypt against the army of Pharaoh-necho king of Egypt which was by the river Euphrates in Carchemish which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon smote in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah

English Explanation: This verse gives the exact historical target of the prophecy: Egypt. Specifically, it targets the army of Pharaoh-Necho at the Battle of Carchemish by the Euphrates River. This monumental battle took place in 605 BC during King Jehoiakim’s fourth year. Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, crushed the Egyptian forces here, permanently shifting the balance of power in the Ancient Near East from Egypt to Babylon.

Jeremiah 46:3

Verse: Order ye the buckler and shield and draw near to battle

English Explanation: Using vivid, poetic irony, the prophet acts as a military commander calling the elite Egyptian army to prepare for combat. They are told to ready their small shields (bucklers) and large body shields, and march forward into the fray. This dramatic call to arms sets the stage, highlighting Egypt’s initial confidence and military might before their sudden downfall.

Jeremiah 46:4

Verse: Harness the horses and get up ye horsemen and stand forth with your helmets furbish the spears and put on the brigandines

English Explanation: The military command continues with intense detail. The Egyptians are told to saddle their horses, mount up, put on their helmets, sharpen (furbish) their spears, and don their body armor (brigandines). Egypt was world-famous for its cavalry and advanced chariot divisions, and this verse paints a picture of a magnificent, fully-equipped imperial superpower ready for victory.

Jeremiah 46:5

Verse: Wherefore have I seen them dismayed and turned away back? and their mighty ones are beaten down and are fled apace and look not back for fear was round about saith the LORD

English Explanation: Suddenly, the tone shifts drastically. The Lord asks why this magnificent army is suddenly terrified, broken, and retreating in total chaos. The elite, brave warriors (“mighty ones”) are crushed and running for their lives without even looking back. The psychological warfare is complete because “fear was round about”—a trademark phrase of Jeremiah indicating total panic caused by divine judgment.

Jeremiah 46:6

Verse: Let not the swift flee away nor the mighty man escape they shall stumble and fall toward the north by the river Euphrates

English Explanation: God decrees that neither speed nor physical strength will save the Egyptians on that day. The fastest runners will not outrun the judgment, and the strongest soldiers will find no escape. They are destined to stumble and fall en masse in the north, specifically along the banks of the Euphrates River, which marked the northern boundary of their ill-fated military campaign.

Jeremiah 46:7

Verse: Who is this that cometh up as a flood whose waters are moved as the rivers

English Explanation: The prophet asks a rhetorical question, comparing an advancing army to a massive, unstoppable seasonal flood. This imagery is deeply tied to Egypt, whose entire civilization depended on the annual rising and flooding of the Nile River. It describes the massive surge of the Egyptian military machine as it marched northward to dominate other lands.

Jeremiah 46:8

Verse: Egypt riseth up like a flood and his waters are moved like the rivers and he saith I will go up and will cover the earth I will destroy the city and the inhabitants thereof

English Explanation: Egypt itself answers the question with immense pride. Pharaoh boasts that he will overflow like the Nile, submerge the known world, and crush all resisting cities and populations. This verse highlights the extreme arrogance of human empires that think they can conquer the world at will, completely ignoring the sovereign plans of God.

Jeremiah 46:9

Verse: Come up ye horses and rage ye chariots and let the mighty men come forth the Ethiopians and the Libyans that handle the shield and the Lydians that handle and bend the bow

English Explanation: This verse describes the multi-national mercenary forces gathered under Egypt’s banner. Pharaoh calls upon his famous cavalry and furious chariots, alongside allied troops and mercenaries: the Ethiopians (Cush) and Libyans (Put) known for defense/shields, and the Lydians (Lud) famous for their deadly archery. Despite assembling an all-star global coalition, it would not be enough to stop what was coming.

Jeremiah 46:10

Verse: For this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts a day of vengeance that he may avenge him of his adversaries and the sword shall devour and it shall be satiate and made drunk with their blood for the Lord GOD of hosts hath a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates

English Explanation: The true nature of the battle is revealed: it is not ultimately Nebuchadnezzar’s day, but the “Day of the Lord GOD of hosts.” It is a day of divine justice and vengeance against those who opposed God’s purposes. The slaughter of the Egyptian army is poetically described as a sacrificial feast for God’s justice, where the sword will devour until it is fully satisfied and drunk with the blood of the arrogant empire.

Jeremiah 46:11

Verse: Go up into Gilead and take balm O virgin the daughter of Egypt in vain shalt thou use many medicines for thou shalt not be cured

English Explanation: God mocks the shattered pride of Egypt, addressing the nation tenderly yet ironically as “O virgin, the daughter of Egypt.” Gilead was world-renowned for its healing medicinal resin and balm. God tells Egypt to go there and try every cure possible, but it is useless. The geopolitical and military wound inflicted upon them by God’s judgment is fatal; Egypt will never recover its status as an independent global superpower.

Jeremiah 46:12

Verse: The nations have heard of thy shame and thy cry hath filled the land for the mighty man hath stumbled against the mighty and they are fallen both together

English Explanation: Egypt’s shocking defeat becomes global news. The surrounding nations, who once feared Egypt, now hear of its humiliation. In the chaotic retreat, Egypt’s elite soldiers panic, tripping over each other (“the mighty man hath stumbled against the mighty”). Their coordinated military strength collapses inward, and they fall together in a heap of historic failure.

Jeremiah 46:13

Verse: The word that the LORD spake to Jeremiah the prophet how Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon should come and smite the land of Egypt

English Explanation: This verse marks a shift to the second major prophecy in the chapter. While the first half focused on Egypt’s defeat far away at the Euphrates, this prophecy focuses on the future invasion of the Egyptian homeland itself. God reveals to Jeremiah that Nebuchadnezzar will not just stop at Carchemish; he will march south and directly strike, plunder, and destabilize the mainland of Egypt.

Jeremiah 46:14

Verse: Declare ye in Egypt and publish in Migdol and publish in Noph and in Tahpanhes say ye Stand fast and prepare thee for the sword shall devour round about thee

English Explanation: God commands a warning cry to be raised in the major, strategic cities of Egypt: Migdol (in the north), Noph (Memphis, the ancient capital), and Tahpanhes (a key border fortress town where Jewish refugees later fled). The citizens are ironically told to stand firm and prepare for war, because the devouring sword of Babylon is already consuming everything along their borders.

Jeremiah 46:15

Verse: Why are thy valiant men swept away? they stood not because the LORD did drive them

English Explanation: The prophet asks why Egypt’s legendary elite guardians and fierce forces have been so easily swept away like debris. The answer is immediate and profound: they could not stand their ground because it wasn’t just a human army they were fighting—the Lord Yahweh Himself was the one thrusting and driving them backward in judgment.

Jeremiah 46:16

Verse: He made many to fall yea one fell upon another and they said Arise and let us go again to our own people and to the land of our nativity from the oppressing sword

English Explanation: The divine pressure causes massive casualties and complete demoralization. As the battle lines crumble and soldiers fall over one another, the foreign mercenaries and allies realize the cause is lost. They decide to abandon Egypt, saying, “Let us get up and return to our own native lands to escape this devastating, oppressive Babylonian sword.”

Jeremiah 46:17

Verse: They did cry there Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a noise he hath passed the time appointed

English Explanation: Egypt’s allies and even its own disillusioned subjects mock the king. Once feared as a living god, Pharaoh is dismissed as nothing but “a noise” (or a loud mouth, a hollow boast). He talked big but failed to act when it mattered most, completely missing his window of opportunity (“passed the time appointed”) to defend his kingdom against Babylon.

Jeremiah 46:18

Verse: As I live saith the King whose name is the LORD of hosts Surely as Tabor is among the mountains and as Carmel by the sea so shall he come

English Explanation: The true King of the Universe takes an absolute oath by His own life. He guarantees that the Babylonian conqueror (Nebuchadnezzar) will come, and his presence will be as undeniable, prominent, and imposing as Mount Tabor rises above the plains or Mount Carmel stands majestically by the Mediterranean Sea. The judgment is solid and unmovable.

Jeremiah 46:19

Verse: O thou daughter dwelling in Egypt furnish thyself to go into captivity for Noph shall be waste and desolate without an inhabitant

English Explanation: Addressing the population of Egypt, God warns them to pack their bags for exile and captivity. Noph (Memphis), one of the proudest, most culturally rich, and heavily populated cities of the ancient world, is designated for complete ruin. It will be left empty, burned, and entirely devoid of human inhabitants after the Babylonian onslaught.

Jeremiah 46:20

Verse: Egypt is like a very fair heifer but destruction cometh it cometh out of the north

English Explanation: Egypt is compared to a beautiful, well-fed, glossy heifer (a young cow), symbolizing its historic luxury, wealth, and pampered lifestyle. However, this beautiful heifer is utterly helpless against the slaughter. The verse ends with an ominous, repetitive warning: destruction is coming, and it is charging fast directly out of the north (the geographic route the Babylonian armies always took).
