Ezekiel Chapter

Ezekiel 16:37

Verse: Behold therefore I will gather all thy lovers with whom thou hast taken pleasure and all them that thou hast loved with all them that thou hast hated I will even gather them round about against thee and will discover thy nakedness unto them that they may see all thy nakedness

  • Detailed Explanation (English): God uses the metaphor of an unfaithful wife to describe Jerusalem. The “lovers” represent the pagan nations (like Egypt, Assyria, and Babylon) with whom Israel made political alliances and practiced idolatry. God declares that these very allies will turn against Jerusalem, invading her borders and exposing her vulnerability and shame to the world.

Ezekiel 16:38

Verse: And I will judge thee as women that break wedlock and shed blood are judged and I will give thee blood in fury and jealousy

  • Detailed Explanation (English): Under the Mosaic Law, adultery and murder carried the death penalty. God addresses Jerusalem not merely as a political entity, but as a covenant partner who committed spiritual adultery (idolatry) and physical murder (sacrificing children to idols). Therefore, His judgment will be executed with righteous fury and divine jealousy.

Ezekiel 16:39

Verse: And I will also give thee into their hand and they shall throw down thine eminent place and shall break down thy high places they shall strip thee also of thy clothes and shall take thy fair jewels and leave thee naked and bare

  • Detailed Explanation (English): The invading foreign armies will act as God’s instrument of judgment. They will destroy Jerusalem’s places of idol worship (“eminent places” and “high places”). The stripping of clothes and stealing of jewels symbolize the complete looting of the city’s wealth, resources, and temple treasures, leaving her totally destitute.

Ezekiel 16:40

Verse: They shall also bring up a company against thee and they shall stone thee with stones and thrust thee through with their swords

  • Detailed Explanation (English): This verse highlights the physical execution of judgment. Stoning was the legal punishment for an adulteress under Jewish law. The “company” refers to the Babylonian army, which would lay siege to the city, destroy its walls with stones, and slaughter its inhabitants with swords.

Ezekiel 16:41

Verse: And they shall burn thine houses with fire and execute judgments upon thee in the sight of many women and I will cause thee to cease from playing the harlot and thou also shalt give no hire any more

  • Detailed Explanation (English): The destruction of Jerusalem by fire historical took place under the Babylonians. The “many women” represent surrounding nations watching Jerusalem’s downfall as a warning. This severe judgment would finally cure Israel of her multi-century addiction to idolatry (“playing the harlot”).

Ezekiel 16:42

Verse: So will I make my fury toward thee to rest and my jealousy shall depart from thee and I will be quiet and will be no more angry

  • Detailed Explanation (English): God’s anger is not uncontrolled rage; it is aimed at justice and restoration. Once the necessary judgment is fully executed and the sin is purged, God’s righteous anger and jealousy will subside, leading to a period of silence and eventual reconciliation.

Ezekiel 16:43

Verse: Because thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth but hast fretted me in all these things behold therefore I also will recompense thy way upon thine head saith the Lord GOD and thou shalt not commit this lewdness above all thine abominations

  • Detailed Explanation (English): Jerusalem forgot God’s grace in her early history (her “youth”) when He rescued her. Instead, she provoked Him to anger with continuous wickedness. God declares that people must face the consequences of their actions (“recompense thy way upon thine head”) to put an end to their vile practices.

Ezekiel 16:44

Verse: Behold every one that useth proverbs shall use this proverb against thee saying As is the mother so is her daughter

  • Detailed Explanation (English): God states that Jerusalem’s spiritual state has become so corrupt that people will apply a common proverb to her. The proverb implies that Jerusalem is acting exactly like the wicked, pagan cultures that occupied the land before her.

Ezekiel 16:45

Verse: Thou art thy mother’s daughter that lotheth her husband and her children and thou art the sister of thy sisters which lothed their husbands and their children your mother was an Hittite and your father an Amorite

  • Detailed Explanation (English): Spiritually speaking, Jerusalem’s ancestry is linked to the Hittites and Amorites—nations notorious for abominable practices. By rejecting God (her husband) and sacrificing her children to idols, Jerusalem proved she shared the same wicked spiritual DNA as those ancient pagan societies.

Ezekiel 16:46

Verse: And thine elder sister is Samaria she and her daughters that dwell at thy left hand and thy younger sister that dwelleth at thy right hand is Sodom and her daughters

  • Detailed Explanation (English): God uses geographic metaphors here. To the north (left hand) was Samaria, the capital of the northern kingdom of Israel. To the south (right hand) was Sodom. Both are called “sisters” to Jerusalem because they shared similar sins and a close historical connection.

Ezekiel 16:47

Verse: Yet hast thou not walked after their ways nor done after their abominations but as if that were a very little thing thou wast corrupted more than they in all thy ways

  • Detailed Explanation (English): This is a stunning indictment. God states that Jerusalem did not merely copy the sins of Samaria and Sodom; she actually surpassed them. Jerusalem had the Temple and the Law, making her deliberate rebellion far more corrupt and inexcusable than that of her neighbors.

Ezekiel 16:48

Verse: As I live saith the Lord GOD Sodom thy sister hath not done she nor her daughters as thou hast done thou and thy daughters

  • Detailed Explanation (English): Validated by a divine oath (“As I live”), God declares that the notoriously wicked city of Sodom—which was utterly destroyed by fire from heaven—was actually less guilty of spiritual betrayal than Jerusalem and her surrounding villages.

Ezekiel 16:49

Verse: Behold this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom pride fulness of bread and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy

  • Detailed Explanation (English): God diagnoses the root sins of Sodom. While often associated with sexual sins, God emphasizes that Sodom’s downfall began with arrogance, material luxury, laziness, and a total disregard for social justice, poor people, and the needy.

Ezekiel 16:50

Verse: And they were haughty and committed abomination before me therefore I took them away as I saw good

  • Detailed Explanation (English): Pride led the people of Sodom to engage in abominable practices directly defying God. Because of this spiritual blindness and moral rot, God judged it best to remove them from the face of the earth, serving as a historical warning.

Ezekiel 16:51

Verse: Neither hath Samaria committed half of thy sins but thou hast multiplied thine abominations more than they and hast justified thy sisters in all thine abominations which thou hast done

  • Detailed Explanation (English): Samaria (the northern kingdom) fell to Assyria due to idolatry, yet God says they didn’t commit even half of Jerusalem’s sins. By comparison, Jerusalem’s actions were so exceptionally evil that they made the sins of Sodom and Samaria look mild or “justified” by comparison.

Ezekiel 16:52

Verse: Thou also which hast judged thy sisters bear thine own shame for thy sins that thou hast committed more abominable than they they are more righteous than thou yea be thou confounded also and bear thy shame in that thou hast justified thy sisters

  • Detailed Explanation (English): Jerusalem used to look down upon and judge Samaria and Sodom for their wickedness. God turns the tables, telling Jerusalem to bear her own immense shame. In a relative sense, those pagan cities were “more righteous” because they did not violate the massive spiritual privileges that Jerusalem abused.

Ezekiel 16:53

Verse: When I shall bring again their captivity the captivity of Sodom and her daughters and the captivity of Samaria and her daughters then will I bring again the captivity of thy captives in the midst of them

  • Detailed Explanation (English): This marks a shift toward future prophetic restoration. God promises that a time will come when He will restore the fortunes of these fallen cities. However, to humble Jerusalem, God states that her restoration will happen alongside, and not exclusive to, the restoration of Sodom and Samaria.

Ezekiel 16:54

Verse: That thou mayest bear thine own shame and mayest be confounded in all that thou hast done in that thou art a comfort unto them

  • Detailed Explanation (English): Jerusalem’s intense sin served as a “comfort” to Sodom and Samaria because it made their own sins look less severe. Seeing Jerusalem punished and then restored along with them would keep Jerusalem humble, reminding her forever of her past deep shame and need for grace.

Ezekiel 16:55

Verse: When thy sisters Sodom and her daughters shall return to their former estate and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former estate then thou and thy daughters shall return to your former estate

  • Detailed Explanation (English): God reiterates the certainty of this ultimate restoration. The “former estate” refers to a state of peace, blessing, and spiritual alignment with God. This prophetic vision looks forward to the ultimate renewal of all things under God’s sovereign kingdom.

Ezekiel 16:56

Verse: For thy sister Sodom was not mentioned by thy mouth in the day of thy pride

  • Detailed Explanation (English): In her days of wealth, power, and pride, Jerusalem considered herself too holy and superior to even speak the name of Sodom. She arrogantly ignored the lessons of Sodom’s judgment, assuming that she was completely immune to a similar fate.

Ezekiel 16:57

Verse: Before thy wickedness was discovered as at the time of thy reproach of the daughters of Syria and all that are round about her the daughters of the Philistines which despise thee round about

  • Detailed Explanation (English): Before Jerusalem’s own corruption was fully exposed by her downfall, she suffered humiliation from neighboring enemies like Syria and the Philistines. God allowed these surrounding nations to mock and despise Jerusalem as an initial consequence of her hidden spiritual rebellion.

Ezekiel 16:58

Verse: Thou hast borne thy lewdness and thine abominations saith the LORD

  • Detailed Explanation (English): The section concludes with a definitive declaration from the Sovereign LORD. Jerusalem must accept full responsibility and bear the consequences of her lewdness and abominations. True healing and ultimate restoration can only begin when the reality of sin is acknowledged and paid for through divine judgment.
