English Explanation
1. “Issachar is a strong ass”
The word “ass” in the King James Version is an old English word for a donkey. It is important not to understand this expression as a modern insult.
In the ancient world, a donkey was a valuable working animal. Donkeys were used for transportation, agriculture, carrying loads, and other forms of labor. Calling Issachar a “strong ass” therefore emphasizes strength, endurance, and usefulness.
Jacob’s description suggests that Issachar would possess the ability to work hard and carry significant burdens. The image is of an animal that has substantial strength but is not necessarily aggressive or independent.
The statement can therefore be understood as a picture of a people with considerable physical and practical strength.
2. “Couching down between two burdens”
“Couching” means lying down or resting. The picture is of a strong animal situated between burdens.
There are different interpretations of this imagery. Some understand the two burdens as representing two forms of responsibility or two pressures between which Issachar would live. Others understand the passage as describing an animal resting between its loads because the work is demanding.
The important point is that Issachar is strong enough to carry burdens, yet he is also associated with rest.
This creates an interesting contrast. Strength does not mean that a person never needs rest. A strong worker still has limits. The verse recognizes both the capacity to labor and the desire for peace.
3. “And he saw that rest was good”
The next line explains something about Issachar’s character:
“And he saw that rest was good…”
Rest is presented as desirable. There is nothing inherently wrong with appreciating peace, security, productive land, or a settled life.
After hardship and labor, rest can be a genuine blessing. A peaceful place can provide opportunities for families, agriculture, community life, and prosperity.
However, the passage also suggests that the desire for comfort can influence a person’s choices. Issachar sees that rest is good, and this affects what he is willing to do.
4. “And the land that it was pleasant”
Issachar also recognizes that the land is pleasant.
The land represents more than physical soil. In the context of the ancient Israelite tribes, territory affected agricultural production, security, prosperity, and everyday life.
A pleasant land could provide food and stability. It could make ordinary life easier and more comfortable.
The verse therefore presents Issachar as someone who values the benefits of a peaceful and fertile environment.
5. “And bowed his shoulder to bear”
This is one of the most important expressions in the passage.
To “bow his shoulder” means to place oneself under a load. The image communicates submission to work, responsibility, or authority.
Issachar has strength, but he uses that strength to carry a burden.
This can be understood positively: strong people are often able to carry responsibilities that others cannot. Strength becomes meaningful when it is used to serve, work, provide, and endure.
At the same time, the verse carries a warning. A person who values comfort may sometimes accept burdens or authority because doing so provides security and peace.
Thus, Issachar’s story contains an important lesson about the relationship between comfort and freedom.
6. “And became a servant unto tribute”
The final expression describes Issachar as becoming subject to tribute or forced labor.
Tribute generally refers to payment, labor, or obligations imposed by a ruling power. The statement therefore introduces a darker element into the passage.
Issachar has strength, but that strength can become useful to someone else. He carries burdens and submits himself to obligations.
The passage can consequently be read as a warning about the danger of allowing the desire for comfort to lead to excessive submission.
A person may possess great strength but fail to use it independently. Physical ability, resources, intelligence, or opportunity can be wasted if comfort becomes more important than freedom and responsibility.
Main Spiritual Lessons
Genesis 49:14-15 provides several lessons.
First, strength is a gift that carries responsibility. Issachar is described as strong, but his strength is connected with burdens. Strength is not merely for personal benefit; it can be used to carry responsibilities and help others.
Second, rest is valuable. The passage does not condemn rest. Rest can be good and necessary. The problem comes when the pursuit of comfort controls every decision.
Third, comfort can have a cost. Issachar sees that the land is pleasant and accepts a burdensome position. The passage reminds readers to consider what they are sacrificing in exchange for security.
Fourth, freedom and responsibility must be balanced. A person should not avoid every burden simply because burdens are difficult. Nor should a person surrender all independence merely to obtain comfort.
Fifth, outward strength does not automatically produce inward freedom. Someone can be strong and capable while still becoming subject to others. True wisdom involves knowing how and where to use one’s strength.
“Issachar is a strong ass couching down between two burdens: And he saw that rest was good, and the land that it was pleasant; and bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant unto tribute.”
“Issachar is a strong ass”
“Couching down between two burdens”
“And he saw that rest was good”
“And the land that it was pleasant”
“And bowed his shoulder to bear”
“And became a servant unto tribute”
