Meaning of “Every Drove by Themselves”

The old English word “drove” refers to a group or herd of animals being driven together. In this passage, Jacob did not send all of his animals as one large group. Instead, he separated them into individual groups and placed them in the hands of his servants.

The phrase “every drove by themselves” means that each group was kept separate. Modern translations commonly express the idea as “each herd by itself” or “separate herds.”

This arrangement had a practical purpose. The servants could lead the animals in an orderly way, while Esau would encounter the gifts one group at a time rather than seeing the entire gift at once.

Meaning of “Put a Space Betwixt Drove and Drove”

The phrase “put a space betwixt drove and drove” means to leave a distance between one group of animals and the next.

Jacob specifically wanted the groups to be separated rather than traveling closely together. Several Bible translations render this thought as keeping “some space between the herds” or putting “some distance between successive droves.”

This created an orderly procession. It also meant that Esau would have an opportunity to encounter each group separately and understand that Jacob was intentionally sending a substantial gift.

Why Did Jacob Separate the Herds?

Jacob’s actions become clearer when we read the following verses. He instructed the servants what to say if Esau questioned them. They were to explain that the animals were a present from Jacob to his lord Esau and that Jacob himself was coming behind them.

The separation of the herds appears to have been part of Jacob’s deliberate attempt to communicate humility and generosity. A traditional commentary explains that the spaces between the groups could prolong the encounter and allow Esau to see the extent of Jacob’s gift gradually.

Jacob was not simply sending animals ahead of himself. He was carefully managing the situation because he was approaching someone whom he feared.

Spiritual Lessons from Genesis 32:16

1. Faith does not eliminate wise preparation

Jacob prayed to God, but he also made practical preparations. His prayer did not lead him to ignore the circumstances around him. Instead, he thought carefully about what he could do to seek peace.

This provides an important principle for believers: trusting God does not mean refusing to act responsibly. Prayer and wise preparation can exist together.

2. Humility can help restore relationships

Jacob’s instructions reveal a humble approach toward Esau. He repeatedly described himself as Esau’s servant and referred to the animals as a present for his brother.

The passage demonstrates the importance of approaching difficult relationships without unnecessary pride. When reconciliation is possible, humility and generosity may help create an atmosphere of peace.

3. Good organization matters

Jacob divided a large number of animals into separate groups and assigned servants to manage them. His instructions were specific: each drove was to remain separate, and there was to be space between the groups.

This is a simple but meaningful example of orderly leadership. A large responsibility becomes easier to manage when it is divided into smaller parts and entrusted to responsible people.

4. Difficult situations require patience

The space between the droves also created intervals in the procession. Jacob did not rush everything together. He allowed events to unfold gradually.

There is a useful lesson here about patience. In difficult circumstances, immediate action is not always the best action. Sometimes a careful, measured approach can prevent additional conflict.

5. God can work through human responsibility

Genesis 32 contains both Jacob’s fear and his dependence upon God. Jacob was responsible for his decisions, yet the larger story ultimately demonstrates God’s providence over Jacob’s life.

The lesson is not that human planning replaces trust in God. Rather, responsible action can accompany faith. Jacob prepared the way while ultimately depending on God for the outcome.

Genesis 32:16 Detailed Explanation in Urdu

پیدائش 32:16 — مکمل آیت

“And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.”

“Every drove by themselves”

“Put a space betwixt drove and drove”
