English Explanation of Genesis 32:19

Genesis 32:19 describes an important part of Jacob’s strategy before meeting Esau. Jacob had divided a large number of animals into separate groups, or “droves,” and placed servants in charge of them. He did not give instructions only to the first servant. He also commanded the second, the third, and everyone who followed the herds to deliver the same message when they encountered Esau.

The phrase “the second, and the third” indicates that Jacob had arranged several groups of animals to approach Esau successively. Each group was to communicate consistently with Esau. The purpose was not simply to organize the animals; Jacob was deliberately preparing the circumstances surrounding his meeting with his brother.

The words “On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau” mean that Jacob wanted his servants to use a particular message and approach. The following verse gives more information about what they were instructed to say: the animals were a gift from Jacob to his lord Esau, and Jacob himself was coming behind them. Genesis 32:20 explains Jacob’s thinking: he hoped that the gifts going ahead of him would help calm Esau before Jacob appeared personally.

Jacob was afraid of the coming encounter. His fear is significant because he knew there was unresolved history between himself and Esau. Instead of simply rushing forward, Jacob made a detailed plan.

He arranged the gifts into groups and instructed each servant carefully. This shows that Jacob was taking practical steps while facing a situation that frightened him.

There is an important lesson here: faith does not necessarily mean refusing to make sensible preparations. Jacob prayed, but he also planned. His actions show both dependence upon God and practical wisdom.

2. The repeated message was deliberate

Jacob wanted every servant to communicate the same basic message. This ensured that Esau would receive a consistent explanation as each group arrived.

The repetition could also create an impression of generosity and humility. Instead of presenting one large gift all at once, Jacob sent successive groups of animals before him. The gifts were intended to prepare Esau emotionally before the brothers actually stood face to face.

Genesis 32:20 makes Jacob’s intention especially clear: “I will appease him with the present that goeth before me.” Jacob hoped that the gifts would make Esau receptive to reconciliation.

3. Jacob approached Esau with humility

Another important feature of the surrounding passage is Jacob’s language. He instructed his servants to refer to him as “thy servant Jacob” and Esau as “my lord Esau.” This language represents a humble posture.

Jacob was not approaching Esau as though nothing had happened in the past. He recognized the seriousness of their relationship and attempted to lower the possibility of conflict.

This is particularly meaningful because Genesis 32 is followed by the account of the brothers actually meeting in Genesis 33. Therefore, verse 19 is part of a larger story about fear, preparation, reconciliation, and restoration.

4. The verse teaches the importance of peaceful communication

Jacob’s instructions show the value of thinking carefully about how a difficult conversation should be handled.

When people have unresolved disagreements, careless words can increase tension. Jacob wanted his representatives to communicate one consistent message rather than speaking independently.

The principle can still be applied today: when reconciliation is the goal, communication should be truthful, respectful, humble, and peaceful.

5. Human planning and trust in God

Genesis 32 also contains Jacob’s prayer to God before this encounter. The chapter therefore presents an interesting combination: Jacob prayed to God and made preparations.

This reminds readers that trusting God does not mean abandoning responsibility. A person can pray for peace while also taking reasonable steps to pursue peace.

Jacob’s story demonstrates that difficult circumstances may require both spiritual dependence and practical wisdom.
