English Explanation of Genesis 32:20

Genesis 32:20 describes Jacob’s careful preparation before meeting his brother Esau. The meeting was extremely important because Jacob was returning to the land of his family after a long period away, and Esau was coming toward him with four hundred men. Jacob knew that his relationship with Esau had a painful history.

Years earlier, Jacob had received the blessing that Isaac intended for Esau. Jacob had also obtained Esau’s birthright. These events had created deep resentment between the brothers, and Jacob had left home. Now, as Jacob returned, he was uncertain about Esau’s attitude toward him.

The immediate context shows Jacob sending large groups of animals ahead as a gift. He instructed his servants regarding what they should say when Esau met them. They were to explain that the animals belonged to Jacob and were being sent as a present to Esau. Jacob himself would follow behind them.

“Thy servant Jacob is behind us”

This expression shows Jacob’s humility in approaching Esau. He did not present himself as someone demanding recognition or claiming superiority. Instead, he described himself as Esau’s servant.

The wording is significant because Jacob was trying to reduce hostility. His purpose was not to provoke Esau but to communicate respect and peaceful intentions.

Jacob understood that reconciliation sometimes requires humility. A person who wants to repair a damaged relationship cannot always approach the other person with pride or demands. Sometimes the first step is acknowledging the seriousness of what happened and approaching the other person respectfully.

“I will appease him with the present”

The word “appease” in this verse means to seek favor, reconciliation, or acceptance. Jacob planned to send a substantial gift before him.

The Hebrew expression behind this wording carries the idea of covering the offended person’s face, with the result that the offense is no longer regarded in the same way. Bible Hub’s commentary notes this background and connects the expression with the idea of making reconciliation or atonement.

Jacob was therefore attempting to soften Esau’s anger before appearing personally.

This does not necessarily mean that Jacob believed the animals could literally erase his past actions. Rather, the gift was a practical expression of humility, respect, and a desire for peace.

“Afterward I will see his face”

Jacob knew that the gift was not the final objective. Eventually, he had to meet Esau himself.

This is one of the most meaningful parts of the verse. Sending gifts could create an opportunity for peace, but Jacob could not permanently avoid the person with whom he had a broken relationship.

There are situations in life where preparation is necessary, but eventually we must face difficult conversations ourselves. Jacob’s gifts went ahead of him, but Jacob still had to stand before Esau.

“Peradventure he will accept of me”

The expression “peradventure” means “perhaps.” Jacob was not certain about the outcome.

This reveals Jacob’s emotional condition. He hoped Esau would receive him favorably, but he did not know what Esau would do.

The verse therefore contains an important lesson about uncertainty. Jacob could prepare carefully, demonstrate humility, send a generous gift, and communicate peaceful intentions, but he could not control Esau’s response.

That distinction remains important today. We can control our own actions, words, attitudes, and willingness to reconcile, but we cannot completely control another person’s reaction.

The following verses show that Jacob continued preparing for the encounter, and then the narrative moves into his night struggle before the meeting.

Spiritual and Practical Lessons

Genesis 32:20 contains several valuable lessons.

  • Humility can open the door to reconciliation. Jacob approached Esau with humility rather than arrogance.
  • Peace may require action. Jacob did not merely hope that everything would work out; he took practical steps toward reconciliation.
  • Generosity can communicate sincerity. His gift demonstrated that he was serious about approaching Esau peacefully.
  • Difficult relationships sometimes have to be faced. Jacob could send gifts ahead, but eventually he had to meet Esau personally.
  • We cannot control another person’s response. Jacob could prepare himself and act wisely, but Esau’s response remained outside Jacob’s control.
  • Fear can exist alongside faith. Jacob was clearly concerned about the meeting, yet he continued moving forward.
  • Reconciliation requires humility rather than entitlement. Jacob’s language demonstrated his desire to lower the possibility of conflict.

An especially important point is that the verse should not be understood as teaching that material gifts can purchase forgiveness. The broader story demonstrates something deeper: Jacob was attempting to make peace through humility and responsible action. His actions were part of a larger journey in which he had to confront his past and depend upon God.
