Verse-by-Verse Commentary & Explanation
Daniel 1:1
Verse: In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem and besieged it.
English Explanation
This verse sets the historical backdrop for the entire book of Daniel. The event takes place around 605 BC during the third year of King Jehoiakim’s reign over Judah. King Nebuchadnezzar II of the Neo-Babylonian Empire launches a military campaign against Jerusalem, surrounding and blockading the city. This marks the beginning of the Babylonian captivity, a direct consequence of Judah’s long-term spiritual compromise and disobedience to God’s covenants.
Daniel 1:2
Verse: And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand with part of the vessels of the house of God which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
English Explanation
A crucial theological truth is highlighted here: Nebuchadnezzar did not conquer Jerusalem merely through military superiority; rather, “the Lord gave” Jehoiakim into his hand. God is sovereign over human empires. The sacred vessels from the Temple of Yahweh are plundered and taken to the land of Shinar (Babylon) to be placed in the pagan temple of Marduk (Bel). This act symbolized, in ancient pagan minds, the victory of Babylonian gods over the God of Israel, setting up a spiritual conflict that the rest of the book resolves.
Daniel 1:3
Verse: And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs that he should bring certain of the children of Israel and of the king’s seed and of the princes
English Explanation
Nebuchadnezzar initiates an integration policy to brainwash and utilize the best minds of the conquered nations. He commands Ashpenaz, his chief court official, to select young men from the royal family and nobility of Israel. The strategy was to isolate these young leaders, strip them of their cultural identity, and train them to become loyal servants of the Babylonian empire.
Daniel 1:4
Verse: Children in whom was no blemish but well favoured and skilful in all wisdom and cunning in knowledge and understanding science and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
English Explanation
The selection criteria for these captive Hebrew youth were incredibly high. They had to be physically flawless, attractive, intellectually gifted, highly educated, and possessing strong social competence. They were to undergo an intense three-year educational program covering the complex language, literature, mathematics, and astrology of the Chaldeans (the elite class of Babylon) to prepare them for high-level government service.
Daniel 1:5
Verse: And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat and of the wine which he drank so nourishing them three years that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
English Explanation
The king provides a daily ration of his premium food and wine to the selected youths. While this looked like an immense privilege, it was a subtle method of cultural assimilation. Eating the king’s food meant accepting his lifestyle and implicitly acknowledging him as their ultimate provider. After three years of physical and mental training, they would be evaluated directly by Nebuchadnezzar.
Daniel 1:6
Verse: Now among these were of the children of Judah Daniel Hananiah Mishael and Azariah
English Explanation
The narrative focuses on four specific individuals chosen from the tribe of Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Their original Hebrew names all embedded references to the true God (Yahweh and El), highlighting their deep-rooted spiritual heritage before entering the pagan environment of Babylon.
Daniel 1:7
Verse: Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar and to Hananiah of Shadrach and to Mishael of Meshach and to Azariah of Abed-nego.
English Explanation
To completely systematically sever their connection to Israel’s God, Ashpenaz assigns them Babylonian names honoring pagan deities. Daniel becomes Belteshazzar (“Bel protect his life”); Hananiah becomes Shadrach (“Command of Aku”); Mishael becomes Meshach (“Who is what Aku is?”); and Azariah becomes Abed-nego (“Servant of Nego/Nabu”). Despite their names being changed externally, their internal faith remained uncompromised.
Daniel 1:8
Verse: But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat nor with the wine which he drank therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
English Explanation
This is the pivotal turning point of Chapter 1. Daniel makes a firm, internal spiritual commitment (“purposed in his heart”) not to defile himself. The king’s food likely violated Mosaic dietary laws (non-kosher meat, or meat offered to idols). Showing incredible courage and respect, Daniel does not rebel violently but requests a diplomatic exemption from the chief official.
Daniel 1:9
Verse: Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.
English Explanation
Just as God sovereignly directed the geopolitical shift in verse 2, He now intervenes in interpersonal dynamics. God grants Daniel favor and sympathy in the eyes of the Babylonian official. This shows that when believers stand firm in their faith, God actively works behind the scenes to pave the way.
Daniel 1:10
Verse: And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel I fear my lord the king who hath appointed your meat and your drink for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.
English Explanation
The chief official expresses legitimate fear for his life. In an absolute monarchy like Babylon, failure to execute the king’s explicit orders regarding the health and appearance of the royal trainees could result in immediate execution (“endanger my head”). He worries that a restricted diet will leave the Hebrew youths looking gaunt and pale compared to their peers.
Daniel 1:11
Verse: Then said Daniel to Melzar whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel Hananiah Mishael and Azariah
English Explanation
After speaking with the chief official, Daniel approaches “Melzar” (a title for the specific steward or guard directly assigned to oversee the daily care of the four Hebrew youths). Daniel proposes a practical alternative compromise to ease their administrative anxieties.
Daniel 1:12
Verse: Prove thy servants I beseech thee ten days and let them give us pulse to eat and water to drink.
English Explanation
Daniel proposes a controlled 10-day experiment. He asks for “pulse” (vegetables, grains, and legumes derived from seeds) and pure water instead of the rich, rich meats and alcoholic wine of the palace. Ten days was a short period, minimizing risk for the steward while allowing God room to show His faithfulness.
Daniel 1:13
Verse: Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s meat and as thou seest deal with thy servants.
English Explanation
Daniel sets up a clear, observable test. At the end of the ten days, the steward is invited to compare the physical appearance and health of the four Hebrews against the youths who consumed the royal diet. Daniel confidently leaves the outcome to the sovereign judgment and blessing of God.
Daniel 1:14
Verse: So he consented to them in this matter and proved them ten days.
English Explanation
The steward agrees to Daniel’s reasonable and respectful terms. The ten-day test begins, setting up a demonstration of divine validation versus human calculation.
Daniel 1:15
Verse: And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat.
English Explanation
The result is medically defying but spiritually predictable: after just ten days, Daniel and his friends look healthier, more vibrant, and physically robust (“fairer and fatter in flesh”) than those eating the rich royal diet. God honored their obedience and commitment to holiness.
Daniel 1:16
Verse: Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat and the wine that they should drink and gave them pulse.
English Explanation
Seeing the clear empirical evidence, the steward permanently removes the king’s meat and wine from their menu, replacing it with the vegetable diet they requested. This allowed the four Hebrews to navigate their training without compromising their spiritual integrity.
Daniel 1:17
Verse: As for these four children God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
English Explanation
While they studied hard, their ultimate intellectual superiority was a supernatural gift: “God gave them knowledge and skill.” They excelled in all secular Babylonian sciences, but Daniel received an additional, unique prophetic gift—the ability to interpret visions and dreams, which becomes central to the narrative of the book.
Daniel 1:18
Verse: Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
English Explanation
The three years of intense Babylonian training come to an end. Ashpenaz gathers all the international trainees and presents them directly to King Nebuchadnezzar for their final graduation examination and assessment.
Daniel 1:19
Verse: And the king communed with them and among them all was found none like Daniel Hananiah Mishael and Azariah therefore stood they before the king.
English Explanation
The king interviews the candidates personally. Among all the elite youth from various conquered nations, none could match the intellect, poise, and depth of Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. As a result, they are appointed to permanent positions in the royal court, entering official state service.
Daniel 1:20
Verse: And in all matters of wisdom and understanding that the king enquired of them he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.
English Explanation
The evaluation reveals that the Hebrew youth are “ten times better” than the veteran magicians, occultists, and wise men of Babylon. True wisdom rooted in the fear of the Lord far outshines the secular and superstitious sciences of the empire.
Daniel 1:21
Verse: And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
English Explanation
This single verse spans decades of history. Daniel outlived the entire Babylonian Empire, continuing his influential court presence into the rise of the Persian Empire under Cyrus the Great (around 539 BC). It demonstrates the longevity and endurance of a life dedicated unconditionally to God.
Chapter 2
Daniel 2:1
Verse: And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams wherewith his spirit was troubled and his sleep brake from him.
English Explanation
Moving into Chapter 2, the timeline focuses on Nebuchadnezzar’s second year of sole reign. God sends the powerful monarch vivid, disturbing dreams that shake his inner being. The dream is an act of divine intervention designed to trouble the king’s spirit and disrupt his sleep, preparing the stage to humble the king and elevate the God of Israel.
Daniel 2:2
Verse: Then the king commanded to call the magicians and the astrologers and the sorcerers and the Chaldeans for to shew the king his dreams So they came and stood before the king.
English Explanation
Desperate for answers, the king summons all classes of his wise men: magicians, astrologers, sorcerers, and Chaldeans. These groups represented the political, intellectual, and occult power of Babylon. They assemble before the king, confident in their ritual skills, completely unaware that they are about to face an impossible test that their human systems cannot solve.
