Detailed Commentary & Explanation (English)
The passage in Genesis 34:13–16 represents one of the most complex narrative turning points in the Book of Genesis. The account addresses the immediate aftermath of the violation of Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah, by Shechem, the prince of the Hivite region.
1. Historical & Narrative Context
Prior to this encounter, Shechem had violated Dinah and subsequently requested his father, Hamor, to negotiate a marriage treaty with Jacob’s family. Hamor presented a proposal for total social integration: intermarriage, joint commerce, and shared land ownership.
While Jacob remained quiet during initial negotiations, his sons—specifically Simeon and Levi—took control of the diplomatic exchange. They felt a profound sense of family honor and grief over their sister’s violation.
2. The Use of Deceit and Covenant Manipulation
The text explicitly highlights that the sons of Jacob answered “deceitfully” (be-mirmah in Hebrew). Rather than delivering an outright rejection or declaring immediate war, they weaponized the holy sign of Abraham’s covenant: circumcision.

| Covenant Violation | Circumcision was instituted by God in Genesis 17 as an eternal token of faith, purity, and devotion to God. | ||||
3. Moral and Theological Implications
-
Defilement of the Sacred: By converting a sacred covenant ritual into a trick of warfare, the brothers compromised spiritual integrity for vengeance.
-
Family Honor vs. Divine Law: The brothers acted out of tribal honor, yet their actions ultimately brought trouble upon Jacob’s household, leading Jacob to later rebuke Simeon and Levi (Genesis 49:5–7).
-
The Tragedy of Unchecked Anger: This passage illustrates how valid indignation, when detached from divine guidance, can turn into betrayal and violence.
Detailed Commentary & Explanation (Urdu) /
