Verse-by-Verse Commentary and Explanations
Hosea 9:16
Verse: Ephraim is smitten their root is dried up they shall bear no fruit yea though they bring forth yet will I slay even the beloved fruit of their womb
English Explanation
This verse uses botanical imagery to describe the total devastation facing the tribe of Ephraim (representing the Northern Kingdom of Israel). By stating that “their root is dried up,” the prophet emphasizes that the judgment is fundamental and irreversible; they cannot draw sustenance or life anymore. Consequently, they will become barren. Even if children are born, they will not survive, symbolizing the cutting off of Israel’s future generations due to their persistent sin.
Hosea 9:17
Verse: My God will cast them away because they did not hearken unto him and they shall be wanderers among the nations
English Explanation
The root cause of Israel’s rejection is clearly stated here: disobedience (“they did not hearken unto him”). Because they refused to listen to God’s laws and prophets, God will reject them as His chosen people for a season. Their punishment is to become exile refugees—homeless wanderers scattered across foreign, pagan nations without a country of their own.
Chapter 10
Hosea 10:1
Verse: Israel is an empty vine he bringeth forth fruit unto himself according to the multitude of his fruit he hath increased the altars according to the goodness of his land they have made goodly images
English Explanation
Israel is compared to a lush but selfish vine. The term “empty vine” here implies a vine that drains its resources solely for its own benefit rather than producing fruit for God. As Israel grew more prosperous and wealthy, instead of thanking Yahweh, they used their wealth to build more pagan altars and beautiful idols. Their material blessings led to spiritual corruption.
Hosea 10:2
Verse: Their heart is divided now shall they be found faulty he shall break down their altars he shall spoil their images
English Explanation
The underlying spiritual problem of Israel was a “divided heart”—they tried to worship both the true God (Yahweh) and pagan idols (Baal). God demands total devotion, not shared loyalty. Because of this hypocrisy, they are found guilty, and God Himself will send enemy forces to smash their pagan altars and destroy their beautiful idols.
Hosea 10:3
Verse: For now they shall say We have no king because we feared not the LORD what then should a king do to us
English Explanation
During the coming judgment, the political stability of Israel will collapse. The people will realize that their earthly king is powerless to save them because they did not reverence or fear the Lord. They will confess that without God’s blessing, an earthly ruler is completely useless and cannot protect them from foreign invasion.
Hosea 10:4
Verse: They have spoken words swearing falsely in making a covenant thus judgment springeth up as hemlock in the furrows of the field
English Explanation
The society of Israel was thoroughly corrupt; their political alliances and treaties were built on empty promises and lies. Because of this lack of integrity and broken covenants, God’s judgment will break out everywhere, spreading like “hemlock”—a deadly, bitter poison—growing rapidly in the plowed furrows of a field.
Hosea 10:5
Verse: The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of the calves of Beth-aven for the people thereof shall mourn over it and the priests thereof that rejoiced on it for the glory thereof because it is departed from it
English Explanation
Samaria (the capital of Israel) will panic not for their safety, but because their false gods—the golden calves of “Beth-aven” (meaning ‘house of wickedness’, a derogatory name for Bethel)—are going to be captured. The people and the corrupt idolatrous priests who once rejoiced in these idols will mourn deeply because the fake “glory” of these statues is completely gone.
Hosea 10:6
Verse: It shall be also carried unto Assyria for a present to king Jareb Ephraim shall receive shame and Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel
English Explanation
The golden calf idol will be broken down and carried off to Assyria as tribute or plunder for the Great King (King Jareb). Israel (Ephraim) will be thoroughly humiliated when they see that the idol they trusted for protection is carried away as captive gold. They will be ashamed of their political strategies and religious choices.
Hosea 10:7
Verse: As for Samaria her king is cut off as the foam upon the water
English Explanation
This verse provides a powerful metaphor for the fragility of earthly power. The king of Samaria will be swept away instantly and effortlessly by the invading Assyrian army, just like a piece of light foam or a twig floating on rushing water vanishes without leaving a trace.
Hosea 10:8
Verse: The high places also of Aven the sin of Israel shall be destroyed the thorn and the thistle shall come up on their altars and they shall say to the mountains Cover us and to the hills Fall on us
English Explanation
The pagan shrines (“high places”) of illegal worship will be completely ruined, left to be overgrown with thorns and weeds. The terror of the invading army will be so overwhelming that the people of Israel will desperately pray for the mountains and hills to collapse over them to hide them from the fierce wrath of God.
Hosea 10:9
Verse: O Israel thou hast sinned from the days of Gibeah there they stood the battle in Gibeah against the children of iniquity did not overtake them
English Explanation
God reminds Israel that their wickedness is not a new problem; it has roots going back to the ancient days of Gibeah (a reference to the horrific moral and civil sins recorded in Judges 19-20). Even though they survived the judgment back then, their long history of institutionalized sin and rebellion has finally caught up with them.
Hosea 10:10
Verse: It is in my desire that I should chastise them and the people shall be gathered against them when they shall bind themselves in their two furrows
English Explanation
God states that it is now His divine decree and timing to discipline them. He will gather foreign nations (the Assyrian coalition) to march against Israel. The phrase “bind themselves in their two furrows” refers to Israel being trapped or bound by their double sins (most likely their rebellion against the house of David and their idolatry of the two golden calves).
Hosea 10:11
Verse: And Ephraim is as an heifer that is taught and loveth to tread out the corn but I passed over upon her fair neck I will make Ephraim to ride Judah shall plow and Jacob shall break his clods
English Explanation
Historically, Ephraim enjoyed an easy, prosperous life, like a trained young cow (heifer) that likes “treading out corn” because she is unyoked and can eat while she works. However, because of her rebellion, God will now put a heavy yoke on her beautiful neck. Israel and Judah will both be forced into hard, intense labor and subjugation under foreign oppressors.
Hosea 10:12
Verse: Sow to yourselves in righteousness reap in mercy break up your fallow ground for it is time to seek the LORD till he come and rain righteousness upon you
English Explanation
Amidst warnings of judgment, God offers a beautiful conditional promise of grace and revival. He uses agricultural metaphors to encourage repentance: they must plant good deeds (“sow in righteousness”), break up their hardened, stubborn hearts (“break up your fallow ground”), and seek God earnestly. If they do, God will respond by showering them with His mercy, forgiveness, and restoration.
Hosea 10:13
Verse: Ye have plowed wickedness ye have reaped iniquity ye have eaten the fruit of lies because thou didst trust in thy way in the multitude of thy mighty men
English Explanation
Instead of obeying verse 12, Israel did the exact opposite. They “plowed wickedness” and naturally “reaped iniquity,” living on a diet of political lies and deceptions. Their fatal mistake was self-reliance—trusting in their own strategies (“thy way”) and relying heavily on the size and strength of their military forces instead of trusting in God.
Hosea 10:14
Verse: Therefore shall a tumult arise among thy people and all thy fortresses shall be spoiled as Shalman spoiled Beth-arbel in the day of battle the mother was dashed in pieces upon her children
English Explanation
Because of their misplaced trust, war cries (“tumult”) will erupt in their cities, and all their heavily fortified bases will be completely destroyed. Hosea references a well-known historical atrocity of that era, where a ruler named Shalman brutally destroyed the city of Beth-arbel, showing zero mercy, even killing mothers along with their young children. A similar horrific fate awaits Israel.
Hosea 10:15
Verse: So shall Bethel do unto you because of your great wickedness in a morning shall the king of Israel utterly be cut off
Explanation
The ultimate cause of this tragic doom is tied back to “Bethel,” the center of Israel’s state-sponsored golden calf idolatry. Their deep spiritual wickedness there brought this calamity upon them. The judgment will execute swiftly; “in a morning”—at the very dawn of the day of battle—the king of Israel will be completely destroyed, ending their national sovereignty overnight.
Chapter 11
Hosea 11:1
Verse: When Israel was a child then I loved him and called my son out of Egypt
English Explanation
Chapter 11 opens with a dramatic shift to an affectionate, tender tone, highlighting God’s fatherly love. God recalls Israel’s infancy as a nation. When they were weak, oppressed slaves in Egypt, God chose them out of pure love, redeemed them, and called them His own “son.” (This verse also serves as a prophetic type fulfilled by Jesus Christ’s return from Egypt, as noted in Matthew 2:15).
Hosea 11:2
Verse: As they called them so they went from them they sacrificed unto Baalim and burned incense to graven images
English Explanation
This verse contrasts God’s incredible love with Israel’s tragic betrayal. The more God’s prophets called out to Israel to return to righteousness, the further the people ran away from Him. They chose to give their gratitude, sacrifices, and worship to pagan idols (“Baalim”) and carved images instead of the true God who saved them.
Hosea 11:3
Verse: I taught Ephraim also to go taking them by their arms but they knew not that I healed them
English Explanation
God uses the heartwarming image of a patient parent teaching a toddler how to walk. God held Israel (Ephraim) by their arms, supporting them through the wilderness, protecting and healing them along the way. Yet, Israel was blind and spiritually ignorant; they failed to recognize that it was Yahweh who was constantly caring for and restoring them.
Hosea 11:4
Verse: I drew them with cords of a man with bands of love and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws and I laid meat unto them
English Explanation
God did not treat Israel like stubborn beasts of burden; instead, He led them gently with human kindness and “bands of love.” He compares His care to a merciful farmer who lifts the heavy wooden yoke off the jaws of a tired ox so it can rest comfortably, and then personally kneels down to feed it. God provided comfort, ease, and daily provisions for Israel.
Hosea 11:5
Verse: He shall not return into the land of Egypt but the Assyrian shall be his king because they refused to return
Explanation
Because Israel adamantly refused to return (“repent”) to God, they will face physical consequences. Though they might want to flee to Egypt for political protection, Egypt will not be their escape. Instead, they will be carried away into captivity where the brutal Assyrian king will rule over them. Refusing to return to God leads directly to a loss of freedom.
Hosea 11:6
Verse: And the sword shall abide on his cities and shall consume his branches and devour them because of their own counsels
English Explanation
Due to Israel’s insistence on following their own corrupt strategies and foolish human advice (“their own counsels”) rather than God’s word, a devastating war will come upon them. The sword of judgment will sweep through their cities, breaking down their defenses and utterly destroying their people (“branches”). Self-reliance ultimately leads to self-destruction.
